I kind of wish you’d used your lathe to make a bunch of rings really quickly, then sold them with your touchmark on them on your t-shirt website. That would have been pretty cool.

Alec, hello! To avoid stripes and flicker when welding, make the shutter speed on the camera longer, not more than 1/50. Actually 1/50 is optimal, then the change of personnel will not be accompanied by dark stripes. Feel free to close the diaphragm at 11+

This whole ring could have been made on a lathe down to finishing it up and polishing it. I know it's a dangerous machine but turning is slightly faster vs milling(if you kept it uniform-ish in width and height like square bar you could have used a 4 jaw chuck). Keep up the awesome content.

I think breaking up the projects actually works really well, particularly for the long and involved ones. I appreciate that this one is due to small bumps in the road, but doing this is actually really good for your viewers. It keeps things fresh whilst at the same time drives the urge to see the longer projects complete. Keep up the awesome work mate, and if you've the chance, reflect on the path you've travelled since Barker st. (indeed, since that charcoal pit forge when you were but a nipper!). Peace. Hi Alec, I've recently made my own damascus ring, where I struggled with managing rust as well. Only fitting solution I've found is coating it with jewelry/steel transparent anti-rust coating spray. Even with inside protection from the moisture of the skin, it will not prevent the outside of the ring to rust over time, as it comes into contact with other fingers when wearing it. Coating also prevents scratches

Hey Alec, quick mill tip for you. Buy some "NC Spotting Drills" instead of centre drills. They are less likely to break and are designed for spotting - centre drills are quite fragile and are specifically for preparing stock for centre use in lathe.

I really liked the editing in this one. The setup to weld the damascus went well with the music. The cuts from you saying what you were going to do, to actually doing it were great. It is much easier to follow (for us novices) when you show right after telling rather than assuming we catch everything you say in the beginning.

@@kernelkertz If anything Alec is the one that cocked it up. He over built the Vacuum chamber, made it too small, and messed up the container pot so that it was too small for there to be enough investment, because he made the vacuum chamber too small, so the bronze or whatever burnt out the side when they poured it. Will did nothing wrong, and is probably just remaking the wax mold of the guard and they're waiting on a bigger vacuum chamber and maybe a bigger forge so they can actually forge stuff instead properly.

I just watched Alec's FAQ video, although I would never condone leaving school at the age of 16, it is apparent to me that this young man had a calling that was placed upon him. We, as viewers, are the benefactors of this man's calling. I believe to date, I have watched every video he has posted, not once did I consider the video's trivial or boring. His capabilities of inviting you to watch is infectious, it seems this kid is NEVER down, always upbeat and always inviting us into his trade. I don't care if he is gay, straight, or anything else. All I can hope for is that he is indeed happy and by the vids I have seen, he has been blessed knowing what he wants to do with the rest of his life, Alec THANK YOU FOR BEING YOU. Hi Alec, a machinist here. While i'm super proud of you for trimming in the mill, it's usually recommended to trim in off the table, so that way you know the mill is square to itself first. Doing it off the vice is good, but 1) a good vice (which yours is) should lay square on the table regardless, and B) if the vice isn't flat on the table, you might be dialed in to it, but if you take it off or shift it in any way on a non-square table, it'll become off itself and now everything has a taper. Also, please use more cutting fluid or coolant when drilling steel like that. There's no such thing as too much, but not enough wrecks drill bits like mad.

Alec if you get a machinable expanding collet you could easily turn the outside of the ring concentric on your lathe. I have used this process on the Monarch lathe at my work to make dozens of bushings. Also a boring head on your mill could get you any sized whole you can imagine.

Hey Alec, just a little tip for your fume extractor, should be at a distance of maximum 1.5 times the diameter of the openning of the arm. That means from about 12 to 16 inches. I know you have a respirator on but the fumes of the welding juste can't all be extracted if it's to far. Words from a safety sally ;) Love your show, keep on the good work!

Good job on the mill, you're making machinists feel better already. Ha ha ha. Just a thought: Already in the Bridgeport for drilling, just switch to a boring head and bore the ID to size. Then ID chuck it on the lathe with a small ID fixture and turn the OD... But hey, I saw you tram the head, use an edge finder, center drill, and even parallels! We might turn you into a machinist after all! 😉

Please stop jump cutting so much it’s so jarring to watch the video when every time Alec is trying to say something and you cut to the next word, it’s important to have a second or 2 of space sometimes or it just feels like I’m being force feed the video I don’t know if anyone else feels this way with the new editor but it just feels like he is cutting way to much and it’s making the video not flow properly

The bit at 7:23 is cut that way to make his point more fluid. If there were a pause in between each cut he'd sound like Captain Kirk. The cuts are necessary because he probably gets tongue tied and/or digresses too much and needs them to make the scene make sense.

At 5:36, it's not sacrilege at all to have an edge finder in a drill chuck. Even if the body of the edge finder isn't held concentrically by the chuck, it will still kick off true to the rotation of the spindle.
