Hey guys, sadly I had to cancel the auction - you can read more about why here: **Auction Cancelled** I found out from commenters on Instagram that a certain proportion of people can get reactions from the nickel content of one of the steels used after prolonged contact between the fingers either side of the ring. Naturally this poses a liability concern if I sell it. Who knows, maybe I’ll turn it into a not-a-ring and sell it then! I’m sorry to let down those of you bidding and excited to win the ring. Nevertheless it was a hugely fun project that I got to practice and learn a lot on! (I’m now itching to see the comments this prompts under the Mokume Gane [copper and nickel] Pendant video I just finished recording and will soon publish 😂)

Since the inside is silver shouldn't that prevent people from having a reaction? EDIT: Ok people can stop pointing out that the outside touches your other fingers, two dozen versions of the same point is enough.

hey brother, suggestion. take some borax mix it in alcohol and coat your gold or silver with the mixture and burn off the alcohol to protect from oxides on your metal. and this will aide in soldering silver and gold. always pickle your silver or gold using a light hcl to clear away oxides after soldering. with the high nickle content of your Damascus you would do well to plate the underside of the ring with nickle, then you could solder the silver to the ring and protect from capillary action of water getting in under the steel using your borax/alcohol to protect the silver ANNEAL the silver before soldering to the ring and forming, the silver will work harden over time

It's a nice piece of work and I loved seeing the problem solving, but that setting doesn't really work in this application for me. @@melissahill7930 how does war and politics affect the speed and ease of use of measuring systems? These are videos for an international audience, using internationally recognized measuring systems makes sense to me. Alec, you may want to look into a bezel setting tool. They are cheap and you could have used one to set the silver inside your ring easily. You would probably not have any problems making one. All gemstones that are cut "en cabochon", or round top, are bezel set.

So cool to see this! This is exactly how I made my wedding ring!. Although I used stainless steel as the liner and 14K Yellow Gold cast into a Celtic knot shape. Plus, I didn't have the right hardy tool so to bend out the liner I had to use my Truck Trailer hitch and a ballpeen. hahaha

bacon banana - ah, but they didn’t actually test the mold though before they melted the wax original did they? Me thinks the first casting didn’t work and the mold was not really good enough to try again. I bet Will’s Project Screwdriver is really an excuse to sit at the bench and remake the wax hilt.

I love your work, but I have to say: I really dont like the way you set your stones. They protrude way too much and destroy the organic look of your piece. Setting them in the material flush with the surface would make it look way better. Maybe there is a way to set stones in that way? Because the protruding setting of the stone destroys pretty much every work you´ve done so far with it, in my honest opinion. I hope this gets across as constructive cirtisism. Keep on rocking!

@@TheClearwall And I clearly said that I dont only mean that for this ring, I mean it in general. Since alec started setting stones he always does it the same way which always, in MY opinion, destroys the overall look of the piece or at least distorts it. It just does not look clean, it sticks out like a sore thumb. And there are always multiple ways of doing things, thats all Im saying. If he gets more expirience and trys out more ways to set stones, he will improve.

I'd love to see you try to make a Tension ring. Especially one of the helix-styled ones. I think that style would show off all the beauty of the Damascus without the clash of a gem setting. Assuming its possible to make with Damascus.

If you'd like to do more rings in the future with the rolled silver over a center piece. Get a small set of dapping punches. Harbor Freight carries a set that would work. But Rio sells much nicer ones.

Hey Alec, I have a comment and a question for you. If you need to sand a round part, I recommend jigging it up in a lathe or other rotary device to save time and also provide uniform material removal. Are you planning on offering any type of blacksmithing classes at your new shop? I very much enjoy your videos, please keep them coming. Also don't sweat your failures, treat them as little lessons on how not to do. David
