Alec - You are becoming quite the craftsman. I am truly impressed. HINT (I learned from Peter Johnsson). Use 0000 steel wool loaded with pumice and either oil or windex between etches. That way, you get the oxides out of the lower region better, and that helps to deepen the topography and increase chatoyance. Trust me, try it. Then, for final polish, do the same trick after the etches, or do the backed 2000 grit paper trick. The steel wool DOESN'T LEAVE SWIRL MARKS OR, "S" HOOKS though. Try it. I have been making knives for 10 years (and mostly Chinese swords, now). Love this series of videos.

That pommel is absurd though. Also I think that over done damascus patterns is kinda gauche. We've been making that stuff for what, at least a thousand and a half years - yet we don't see etching until the last twenty years. That tells me this is a modern trend. I just don't think it looks cool. I think it looks quite ugly.

I have been studying rapier under tutelage as a martial art, and wanted to blend my new blacksmithing to manufacturing rapiers. The kris is famous for its distinctive wavy blade, although many have straight blades as well.), but other significantly easier ideas might include such things as a traditional mace, warhammer, and single or double bladed war axes, and even on to pole arms like partisans and bardiche, or even an outright two handed great sword, as you seem to be escalating your weapons as you go. keep up the good work, and learning the lessons from the not quite as good as it could have been work, and keep the camera turned on, and I will keep watching, be well

I remember when you made your first sword in your old work shop. Massive undertaking. You learned a lot. But to see that you've come so far as to hand forge your very own Damascus steel rapier that is absolutely beautiful by the way, it's amazing. Truely the finest forged work I have ever seen. Just the pattern of the Damascus, the fluted inlaid silver African black wood handle (probably my favourite part of the piece), the beautifully flowing basket. It really is stunning. Fantastic work.

That sword is loved. Alec put heart and soul into it, pushing past his skill level to stylize the work on a far more personal level and it shows so much in these videos. I feel a little like I just watched a distant cousin graduate preschool though. Talk about standing on ceremony, 14 times longer than truly necessary but there are those that appreciate the journey more than myself. I do appreciate the work and workmanship very much regardless! Also, is it just me or is the quality of this, the journey in particular seem like this could be a short movie? I don't mean all individual episodes just combined in order, but like edited to show a story of craftsmanship? Not unlike that documentary about that guy that built a cabin in Alaska back in the 50's or 60's from hewn logs into a cabin to building a bed. I wonder if something like that could be sold or become an add-on item in a merch store or something.

... Wow. Just... wow. The comparison does not equate, there. He made an amazingly gorgeous sword, but the wire basket isn't up to the quality of either the blade, or his level of work. This is a thing that can be said, because I respect the man's work. I agree as well. This is absolutely amazing overall, but as he says himself "nothing is perfect" and if there were an area that area I could see him wanting to potentially just a tiny bit better is here. This is a beautiful piece of art of any artist wouldn't mind some positive criticism or ideas. On another note, I could potentially see him somehow incorporating the silver wire into the basket and really accenting some curves to make it pop!

I fixed it 😂 I fought the finish on the guard all day doing all sorts of different things, assembled it when I thought I had got it as black as possible and only after filming the outtro did I remember I had some stove paste, disassembled it (thank goodness it's not a glued construction), blackened the guard before re-filming and editing the reveal montage 😂

Hey Alex, it's been great seeing you repair and rebuild your machines and building tooling and replacing parts etc... But it's awesome seeing you working with the forge again and bashing the living daylights out of some steel stock and turning it into a beautiful and functional finished product... This sword is amazing, you should be chuffed with yourself dude. A work of art! It was great seeing Sam pop in too and help out when you needed it. Thanks for doing what you do and keep at it :)

I kind of wish there was fluting of some sort on the pommel. I think it would make it match the rest of the piece better. But overall an amazing job! I’m blown away with the quality of your work!

Incredible job Alec! Was well worth the 8,838,748,993 part video it took to complete! 😄 Definitely can't wait to get some merch.. you should get some flame retardant jackets or hoodies with your logo on it so we can look cool and not catch ourselves on fire all at the same time. That would be awesome! Can't wait to see what project is next !

Awesome. Being a clarinetist I am intrigued that you made the handle from African Blackwood - the same wood professional clarinets are made of. Beautifully done.
