5:48 the incredible thing about the Alekhine's defense is that in some variations (such as the one played by them), the black side actually gets its pieces developed prior to the white side, despite having moved the same knight 3 times in the first 4 moves of the game. 🤯

Alekhine is a serious opening. Not many players study it very hard either. It often leads to super wild positions.

I like it and have played it for a long time. If you go wrong as Black you can suffer, but I like that most players as White don't know it quite that well.

All the rapids makes one miss traditional chess, but these games are a refreshing palette cleanser, too. As strong as Carlsen is at traditional time control, I think he's untouchable at this speed. Maybe before long Alireza can catch him, who knows. Wonderful job as always, Daniel, such a pleasure to hear you in these days of lockdown.

Carlsen said he was happy with the game apart from 23 ... c6 which he thought was a poor move. He suggested Rd7 instead. I didn't catch any more than that though.
@PowerPlayChess
@PowerPlayChess 4 жыл бұрын
Perhaps ...Rd7 was a bit better than the game continuation, but not so much (c5 should be played by White in that case as well). Basically, it's a difficult position for both sides, but Magnus simply handled it much better than Fabi.

Daniel: what's wrong with 16. fxNe5 for white? seems potentially better than the game continuation, pushing the black knight off f6, and winning a tempo. White could then configure a queen and dark knight battery on the main diagonal, providing some counter play?

For a long time I played the Alekhine's. But when I came back to chess a year or so ago I found few players going for the Four Pawns Attack but many, even young kids, playing (or trying to play) the Vorezhev variation of the Exchange system. And I got tired of playing those difficult positions working on a draw against weaker players. Now I play the Sicilian. 😀
@tonymiller6847

I played tournament chess for over 40 years (including several where I played Alekhine's Defense exclusively) and I never heard of the Vorezhev variation, but I did play the Brooklyn variation. 1. e4 N'f6 2. e5 Ng8. TigranPetrosian played it against another GM and drew.

Rc1 O-O and 9. b3! and Black's "dragon" bishop ends up pointing at a target-less Qside. Chetverik and Kalinichenko devote a number of chapters to various main replies and sidelines in their Alekhine's Defense book.

After move 18 Daniel mentions that Magnus is a clear exchange up, but Fabiano has compensation in the form of the bishop pair. But isn't that too generous? Black hardly has any weaknesses and once he manages to exchange the white squared bishop, an endgame genius like Magnus will have a good chance of squeezing out a win.

You know, I thought about showing this, but - naah. I feel very sorry for Alireza. He was obviously very disturbed by the connection problem in game 1 and he collapsed at a certain point. I don't want to dwell in his misfortune. Hikaru is a brilliant rapid player (and very comfortable playing online) and I think one of the favourites in the tournament, so he might well have won this match anyway, but the whole incident was very unfortunate.

The idea was to give one or two pawns for development and a rather undynamic "clump of pieces" a8/b8/c8/d7, but I haven't done any exploration with engines either. My guess would be, that when giving 1 or 2 pawns for this idea, engines won't particularily like it at first. It is an unusual position; intuitively I'd say there should be a way to punish 8...Bc8 respectively the preceding move. After 9.a4 the threat to play a5 seems to force matters and if black plays 9...a5 himself, the new option Bxb6 looks quite strong. So after a4, 9...dxe5 is probably the critical line. A tactical idea: exf4 can sometimes be answered by Bd4 attacking the Bg7, as black hasn't castled yet (Bxd4 Qxd4 means Rh8 en prise).
