It does seem that Magnus struggles against Chucky, although in fairness Chucky is an exceptional talent who never really achieved what his talent deserved. Great game though and fab analysis as always by Danny👍

I think back to the Candidates in London 2013 where Ivanchuk, playing a miserable tournament, defeated Carlsen (convincingly) and almost derailed his progress to the world title. Ivanchuk is a unique talent.

@@PowerPlayChess Chucky both almost derailed but also massively helped Carlsen, because he also beat Kramnik earlier in the tournament. Kramnik had the same score but came in second in the tournament based on tie breaks.

Chucky and Magnus really do create a fascinating clash of styles and, as they say in boxing, styles make the fight. Ivanchuk is a true genius, one of the greatest players to never become world champion. As many know already, Chucky's eccentricities were the only reason he didn't obtain the highest title in chess. When in form, he is a match for any player that has ever lived.

Fact that Chuky pushed Carlsen to Armageddon stage of the match says enough of Chuky's strength in rapid chess. Besides he was a rapid chess champ just a few years back!

After total dominance or by the skin of his teeth, never mind format or situation, in the end, the winner is Magnus. He seems to have endless energy, coupled with the conviction that loosing is not an option, that's a deadly combination, like some Mike Tyson in his prime... For how many more years?

nice to see Chucky back in top level chess after a long hibernation. Thanks for covering this game, hoped to see their first round game too which Chucky won (what is the fun in seeing Magnus winning yet another game, a win by Chucky against the WC would have been incredible!).

Well, as much as I like Ivanchuk, he is not back in top level chess. His rating is below 2700 at the moment, you don't expect to see him in any top tournament, except the ones which have "legends" in their title.

This opening is a great illustration to lower level players like me of the fact that it can be perfectly fine to disregard basic opening principles (here we see white moving one of his knights four times and black playing pawn to d6 followed quickly by d5) as long as it's in reaction to what your opponent is doing.

Sad to learn that Carlsen won the Armageddon game by trickery and Ivanchuk just ran out of time. In the recent interview on the chess24 Russian channel here is the link for those who understand Russian: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqKnXnx3l96lpq8 Ivanchuk said that he feels that he plays better then Carlsen. That feeling might even be true, but Carlsen certainly has more experience with tricking people in online games when they are short of time.
@PowerPlayChess
@PowerPlayChess 4 жыл бұрын
'Trickery' - I think you are going to have to expand on that. I watched the game live and it was very tense with Ivanchuk missing a tactic at the end and his time running out at the same time. There was nothing unfair about this armageddon game, which is what you seem to be implying.
@SBelaya
@SBelaya 4 жыл бұрын
@@PowerPlayChess I did not imply that the result was unfair. The rules are the rules, and everything that happens within those rules is fair. If I was implying anything is that I am not a fan of faster time controls with no increment.

@@PowerPlayChess No disagreement whatsoever between us here. If 'trickery' was an unfortunate word usage from me, in my defence it was influenced by 19:30: "...and Carlsen tricked him". I would be happy to disagree with you somewhere else if the opportunity is presented though ;)

What happened in game 1? Seems like Carlsen missed a simple checkmate in 2 and then missed a checkmate in 1. Carlsen lost on purpose?
@PowerPlayChess
@PowerPlayChess 4 жыл бұрын
On purpose?? It's rapid play and mistakes happen. I would say that the standard of chess is, overall, incredibly high from all the players: far fewer blunders than one might anticipate given the speed of play.
