Alekhine was smarter than you think in this game. He meant it as an advertisement for his own defense. Since then Alekhine' defense became so popular that he was making huge money on it. It went so far, that even Sicilian mafia was losing money to Alekhine, so they hired the next grandmasters to popularize Sicilian defense.

I bet Bettinger could not sleep for 48 hours after this dramatic loss. As is usually the case with lower rated players against professionals they sometimes do not see the wood for the trees - even if the Master blunders they just cannot believe it to be true, possibly suspecting some trap or elegant defence where there is none - and then go for the second- or third best move.

The psychological effect of playing against a legend can obscure your point of view and cause you to miss blatant victory. Its quite sad, i believe that bettinger truly deserved the win here.

@aBetterHumanBeing

Well it is kinda easy to say from your perspective tho, you were not in that situation, playing against alekhine. Maybe he succumbed to the pressure and lost his cool.
@krishnamohan2351

+The Drunk Knight These moves don't seem to be that hard to spot at GM level. Like you said it could have been the pressure or Alekhine's aura.
@andrewcady9443
@andrewcady9443 8 жыл бұрын
What do you mean "at GM level"? Surely Bettinger was no GM, what GM would play a 29-board simul as one of the 29?
@ghostgurl17
@ghostgurl17 8 жыл бұрын
he might not have the GM label on him but the way he plays during that time (1930s was this game?) hes good!, probly one of those Washington square hustlers..

There were a lot of boards and probably a lot of distractions.However, Bettinger failed to find his best move several times.Did he lack confidence?...probably. Did he have the game of his life?...indeed.

I find it hard to believe some bloke named Bettinger actually had a winning chance against Alekhine! Then again, ti saw a simul, and even the best grandmasters have been known to falter in simuls.

That wasn't very impressive by either player, but my god, how could Bettinger miss Bxf2+? Alekhines "error" also seems amateurish, but perhaps it's on purpose? Like GMs starting a piece down at exebition games and winning easily anyway?
