I got a cockatiel and it broke my heart seeing him looking sad, new home, new owner and no idea what was happening. All alone with just some old man for company. His only friend was his own reflection in mirror. So I found him a friend and now he's a cheeky bird who loves bombarding me and is so full of life. I never lock them in cage, my home is their home and I love them dearly and they are so well behaved, I am so blessed.

@@ellstoca they are never in their cage except for bed time, and then they not closed in cage, they have total freedom 24/7 but they always like to sleep in the cage. As for the mirror you mentioned, there is still one, like a plastic flower with a little mirror in the center, but to be honest, they never take notice, it's more decoration than anything. If there was a hint of a problem with that or anything else it would be removed. But of course I am learning all the time thanks to folks like you who probably have far more knowledge about caring for a beloved birds, thank you for your advice.

I live in Finland, the neighbor of Sweden. Although I have never heard the similar law in Finland, the pet shops wouldn't sell you the bird if it will be alone. The shop assistants ask how many birds you already have, the condition of your home, the bird care experience you have, before they consider selling the birds. Also the price of a budgie is higher than in many other countries, it is about 65€ per budgie. That also helps preventing impulse purchase or as toys for small kids.

Before I started watching youtube videos about budgies it never crossed my mind to have just 1 budgie or clip their wings. That seems utterly cruel to me. I'm from Germany though and every pet shop will tell you to get at least 2. They would look at you like you're a monster if you'd even dared to ask if they are clipped, let alone if they could clip that bird for you. Same with other birds here though. I've never even seen a clipped budgie outside of videos.

Also make sure you feed it at least 1 vegetable and 1 fruit each day and some seed not a lot of seed.
@kiki290733 жыл бұрын
They don't need many fruits. You should be trying to get it to eat veggies. Start out with broccoli. You can shave the seeds of the head and they love them. They also love spinach and kale. All items should be cut into tiny pieces so they can eat them to start with. You then need to learn to make bird chop which is a mix of fresh veggies, cooked veggies, legumes grains. This should be their main diet with pellets as supplement. Seeds only treats and small part of diet. Tame birds get fatty liver disease from eating a lot of seed because they are fatty foods. They don't get enough exercise when captive to burn the fat off. It will also cause fatty tumors and even cancer. Look up bird chop recipes. Specifically Birdtricks channel basic bird chop recipe. There is also a recipe for a homemade seed mix that is much healthier than store bought dried up seeds. Another good thing is to feed them sprouted grains. You can sprout their millet, quinoa and all kinds of other seeds. In fact sprouted seeds is the best seeds for them. Much lower in fat and adds greens to their diet.n

Where I use to live (Washington DC) in petco they cost $15 there for each parakeet however there are employees who do feed them, change their water and clean their glass cage(?) regularly and they always chatter and play with their toys they all seem happy together. They had Conures, cockatiels, quakers and love birds and they seem well cared for in the store. And they give you book on how to care for them for the bird you purchase, and help you the cage they need, the employees DO not allow you to get the bird if you don’t get the cage they need or show them proof that you have a right cage for them by showing a picture of the cage and inform them the size of the cage before giving you the bird. However where I live now in Maryland (different petco) budgies cost $45 each and they never last in the store, the group of parakeets look young but something is wrong with them all the time, they are REALLY quiet, they look sad all the time I visited them to pick up fish food for my mom’s fish. They all die. The employees DO not clean their water, change their food and their toys are always dirty. The parakeets die all at once, no one buys them. Petco brings another batch of young parakeets and they all die the same fate. Now it’s empty. They don’t have any other parrots/birds they only have parakeets, makes me wonder if they are no longer selling parakeets anymore because the budgies keep dying out due to negligence and also because nobody buys them, why would anyone? They look sad and look sick all the time. Every time I visited the store to get fish food I glance at them as see them all sad and I immediately think; “Yeah…they are all going to die, then be thrown in the trash. Cycle repeats.” They need to fire these useless employees including the manager who aren’t doing their job as they should, if the petco in Washington D.C’s employees managed to care their animals and they seem very lively and happy there and seem so last longer there then why can’t Maryland’s petco? In general I don’t trust pet stores anymore.

I have a female white budgie that gave birth a bit ago, and it’s starting to become weak, what should I do, or will it recover?
@The-Grateful-Hippie3 жыл бұрын
Gave birth ? Meaning laying an egg? Please offer your bird a cuddle bone she's going to need the calcium. Keep a close eye on her because eggs can get stuck inside and this is a true emergency! It could kill your bird. If your bird is with a male budgie in your home then the egg could be fertile. If there is no male present then the egg will not hatch into a chick. However removing the egg too early can cause your female to lay more - that can make her more weak and increase the possibility an egg can get stuck inside. Your bird may lay an egg every other day or so till she has layed a clutch of 4-6. If she lays more than 6 you might need to give her fake eggs that you can order online. The idea is to giver her a lot - say 10 all at once to help turn off her hormones. Source: personal experience. A strict 12 hour day / night light cycle helps, as well as reducing the amount of carbohydrates and fat the bird eats. Best of luck to you!

@@The-Grateful-Hippie The thing is though, the eggs have already hatched into little birds.
