Alesis VI61 Midi Keyboard Controller

Hey, so newb here. I have had my alesis v161 for over a year now. Bought it with the aspiration to learn how to play the piano/keyboard. Been playing guitar for a number of year. But trying to learn how to tie everything together, and learn to record some of the things I play. Unfortunately, I have never successfully been able to get my keyboard to play anything on my laptop, despite having used several different audio programs. Started with audacity, then went with Scarlett studio, (since that came free with my audio interface). Am I missing something here? I was hoping to be able to just plug it in, and make it sound like different instruments if I wanted to. Really just want something to learn to play piano on. Where did I go wrong in this? P.S. I'm also a bit of a novice when it comes to computers. Please help!
