The British Empire was magnificent, but so was the early Ottoman, and Mongol Empires, even the Zulu Empire had moments of immense glory. The British sacrificed much of their Empire to stave off National Socialism (Nazism) and I think that is a worthwhile price to pay. As for England, it is a universal truth that Southgate is not competent, but the FA do not need England to win, to make money. My starting line up, would be a high pressing team, nominally a 5.2.3 GK - Pickford, Centre Backs - Kyle Walker, John Stones & Marc Guehi, Right Wing Back - Trent Alexander-Arnold, Left Wing Back - Bukayo Saka, Midfield - Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Left Wing - Anthony Gordon, Right Wing - Phil Foden, Striker - Harry Kane. After 60mins, Ollie Watkins for Kane. Cole Palmer, would replace either, Foden, Gordon or Bellingham. Then with 15mins to go, pick from, Ivan Toney, Eberechi Eze, Jarrod Bowen & Conor Gallagher, to replace whoever's looking tired in the forward pressing positions.

Obviously England isn't playing as a cohesive team, but I'd say the main problems are as follows: - Some players playing out of their natural/best positions (and Southgate not willing to bench star players to create a good cohesive team) - England playing a weird formation (why not 3-5-2 with two wing backs?) - Poor tactics - Poor passing - Poor pressing - Lack of drive, passion, heart and soul If Southgate fixes all these problems then I think England will perform MUCH better than they have to date. Saying that England has the 'easy' side of the draw is patronising and insulting to the teams we'll face. So far England looks weak and I don't think Slovakia will be fearing us as things stand.
