And he tried to bury Paul McGrath for £80,000. Permanently retire him. He never told McGrath that Liverpool were in for him. Eventually McGrath made his way to Aston Villa. Ron Atkinson had him move into his family home (helped with his alcoholism) the Villa physio worked out a unique training regime (he did gym-based cardio to relieve the stress on his knees) and McGrath flourished. He played the best football of his career in the 90s. He was widely regarded as being absolutely brilliant for the Republic of Ireland during USA '94 too. No thanks to Fergie, who tried to force McGrath to retire prematurely.
