As someone growing up in Germany, not having a favorite team in the Bundesliga, I always enjoyed the big Clashs between Bayern Munich and Manchester United, especially in the 90's. When there was an british team ethic and a german, cause of a lot of local players on both sides. Football then was different. The respect for each other was huge. Era, they all left an amazing era behind. The love for the game, unique characters like Gary, Roy, Giggsy, Scholes, Butty and many more, and on the other side, Basler, Effenberg, Kahn, Matthäus. The bondage between cannot be compared to the current one's. You can feel the determination, the loyalty and warrior like mindset as an opponent. I always respected how Roy Keane kept his composure and simultaneously going forward like a true captain with aggression and dedication.

I think it's fair to say he was never a player full of flair but like a lot of United fans I loved him as much as other fans hated him. Him and Beckham had such a good playing chemistry (is that a thing?) and for close to ten years he gave his all for the team. The class of 92 was a beautiful thing to behold especially after the Souness of the day Alan Hanson said "you can't win anything with kids" Thankyou Gary.

In 2004 my terminally ill brother and lifelong United fanatic who supported us home and away since he was 16 (and then introduced his 3 boys one by one right until his passing) had a friend who worked for one of United’s main sponsors, the friend arranged for my brother to go into the dressing room to meet the players 2.5 hours before a home game. Roy Keane put his arm around Steve and didn’t leave his side, he introduced Steve to all of the players one by one and he had his photo taken with them all - everyone bar Gary and Phill Neville who completely ignored Steve and wouldn’t speak or have a photo with him. At his home Steve had signed photos, shirts and personal letters (that he had put up all over the walls during his battle with cancer) encouraging him on from from Sir Alex, Roy Keane, David Beckham and lots of other players, Bobby Charlton etc. - Chris (Steves friend) cried when he told us later how the Neville’s had been so arrogant and disrespectful (as to make the point ‘what’s he doing here’) and said he was so angry he had to walk out and hit a wall. Steve passed away 4 months later at 42, and Gary Neville and his arrogant little brother have been known simply as the ‘c@nts’ in our family household ever since - although I’m sure the Neville’s have matured and changed their behaviours over the years. Roy Keane though…a legend at United and a top, top, top, top human being too.

if you read this rio. it was madness ,giggs scored that goal in the cup and then waht happened in that cl was so sick. the group games and the 2 3-3 games with barca and rivaldo and (beckhame was robbed for the bador tbh) and then we win like that and manchester went off . we all ran out of our houses and wilmslow road was blocked but we all got to town and fools was in the fountains and then i was in a fkn fountain and then the next few days was me n the lads fucked up drunk in town with white , black,asian,muslims all of red beothers and the best time of my life those few days

I dont get the argument that gary neville wasn't great. Or "technically great". He was a defender and his job was to defend and when possible get forward and help out whoever played infront of him. Hes definitely in the top 5 right back list of the Premier league era. You dont play for man United for 15 years and make as many England appearances as he did just because you work hard.

I disagree. While Neville might not have been as attack minded and contributed goals/assists like we see modern full backs do today I.e Trent, Robertson, Trippier. He added a lot to United’s right flank over the years, mainly with his partnership witn Beckham. His overlapping runs, drawing in opposition defenders and creating space for Beckham to cross is very underrated. He also had a fairly good cross on him too, numerous times putting it on a plate for the likes of Cole, Van Nistelrooy and Rooney. All round he was a brilliant right back.

Few full backs at that time were better than him in this respect (there are only a few Dennis Irwins and Ashley Coles you can throw at him, in talent terms). Gary constantly plays down his football career 'cause his knows the success of this stage of his life is dependant on people (i.e. rival football fans) moving on and forgetting how much they hated his success.

@@smoothchill1469 Yeah, I've always kind of felt that his evaluation of his ability was a bit of an act to make him come across as more endearing. Like sure he wasn't as talented as some of the other great right-backs of his time like Cafu and Zanetti for instance, but he wasn't a scrub by any means. You don't make that many appearances for England and United by just being a hard worker. You also need to have a fair bit of talent as well. He was a solid crosser of the ball and got up and down the pitch superbly well. His partnership with Beckham was fantastic.

And he was actually solid with his left foot too. He was one of the most hated players in the league when he was a player and so to present a good media image, he's made it seem like he was some talentless scrub who was only in the team due to sheer will and hard work, which was absolutely not the case. It's obviously worked for him as well because he's been able to forge a career as a reasonably likable pundit.

Certain points in matches define that season: FA Cup 3rd round losing 1-0 to Liverpool after 87 mins but win 2-1 after 90 mins, Schmeichel saves 90th min penalty v Arsenal in FA Cup semi at 1-1, Bayern hit both post and bar leading 1-0. 24 years on and not being a Utd fan, you just have to accept they were a good team but every team needs an element of luck & someone up there was looking down on them and fate was on their side.
