I was lucky enough to play 2 frames of snooker with him when I was 14 back in 1996. I won a league in a snooker hall not far from when he lived in Mottram St-Andrews an the prize was a best of 3 against him. He thrashed me obviously but loved every minute of it getting to meet him and have a chat and laugh with one of my snooker idols.

I almost agree with you, but, Alex made it what it was in the 80's and 90's. He propelled it into the stratosphere. He didn't make snooker what it is today. Snooker is a shadow of how brilliant and exciting it was when Alex was about. If people with the same attitude, personality and genius of Alex where around today it would be a major sport, watched by millions as it used to be in the 80's and 90's.

Bless Alex. I used to get so nervous watching him play. He always seemed to move on the shot and looked like he had a miss in him. He'd lose control of the cue ball during a break. I'd screw my face up watching him.....but then he'd produce brilliance to get himself out of trouble and continue the break....and I'd punch the air with joy. It was always edge of seat stuff, when he was at the table. A genius, a maverick. Thank you Alex for making snooker exciting and bringing it to the people. You must be "God" to Jimmy, Ronnie and Judd.

The 80s. what a decade for sport. Snooker like golf back then, had characters with real charisma. Sheer natural talent. Alex reminds me of Seve on the golf course. Complete artists with great imagination. Both should have probably won more majors but that unpredictability and ability to pull off the impossible at any time was what made you a fan and kept you on the edge of your seat. There's no argument at the top level of snooker, genius is apparent, it's not just skill or practice, it's an indisputable ability to exceed the norm and create perfection, but Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins a one of a kind human and snooker player. Place him in the modern era and he would win snooker matches, especially on the modern tables today, he was that good, he plays snooker shots no professional would attempt today, yet he made a huge number in his early career, and beat players like Stephen hendry in his later career, not bad with all the baggage he carried around with him, The Hurricane the Motzart of snooker, RIP maestro!

Alex made snooker what it is today, his flare, twitching and speed makes him even more amazing that he was as brilliant as he was, I remember Steve Davis saying in the mid 80s that when Alex was on his A game he was unbeatable.

He wanted to entertain, even at great cost to himself. I feel sure he could have won the world title a lot more than he actually did.
