If you haven't watched 'Free Solo', the documentary about Alex Honnold completing the most insane free solo climb ever I suggest you do. Its honestly one of the craziest things ive ever watched, and the fact that its non-fiction is ridiculous. Plus it goes more into his personality, and how he ended up with that sort of psychopathy while also displaying one of the greatest physical feats a human has ever done.

@ouwle6618
@ouwle6618 2 жыл бұрын
The takeaway from the test is not that Alex doesn't feel fear like normal humans, he does. He is still afraid of other things then climbing, heights and to some extent death. The point is that he proves that you can train away substantial fears with training and years of experience. It's like overcoming a major phobia, and the fear of death is something 99% of humans live with. His movie "Free Solo" shows you that you can overcome any fear, and that you should, if your goal is that valuable to you. Don't let fear stop you in pursuit of you dreams, since you can even overcome the fear of death. However it is important to note that it doesn't have to be deadly. It can be more "simple" fears that stop anyone from achieving anything in life.

All of the armchair psychologists in the chat need to chill about the amygdala fear-producing chemical stuff.The only thing the scientists in the movie said was that his brain was not activating a fear-response to photos. That's probably because the dude has been in life or death situations daily and has trained himself, over decades, not to panic. He also does feel fear and does panic in the same film. He got extremely spooked on the first attempt of the wall and was visibly shaken from that after he got back to his base camp.

I think something to mention is that although Alex did try and convince Magnus to go and climb free solo with him, Magnus had every opportunity to back out before they went up. At the end of the day, it was Magnus's decision to do something like this. Another point is that this wall was a 5.9 climb which is far far far below Magnus's skill level, which is why Alex felt comfortable enough to bring Magnus along with him to climb it. For Magnus a 5.9 is like climbing a really long ladder without any safety gear, still dangerous, but not nearly as dangerous as people are making it out to be.

About the guy who abandoned a friend on the mountain: that's absolutely a crime and he SHOULD go to prison. He convinced somebody to do something dangerous that he knew they weren't prepared to do, then intentionally removed the one safety net that he had no doubt promised. That's reckless endangerment, at best. Probably worse, since intent is pretty clearly involved. People have been locked up for much less.

That's funny, when I was a little kid I used to go on all of the big roller coasters since I was tall for my age, and I used to pretend that I was flying a fighter jet. So the whole time people were screaming with their hands up, I was focused and had my hands on an imaginary throttle and flight controls. Haa haa... I guess I wasn't scared because I was obsessed with air shows and fighter jets, and the roller coasters were obviously safer than flying.

Dude Atrioc, thank you. For making me interested in things I’d normally pass off as not being something I’d enjoy- I didn’t & still don’t know too much about free climbing, but this is one of the funniest, entertaining & engaging videos I have seen in awhile. I watched the VOD too originally but stopped a bit after your guys’ climbing excursion, but even rewatching through to edit was fun again. I especially love how without context of the VOD, you don’t know that the full sentence was “Nick is NOT that cool… And he’s *my* friend!” Bro got unfriendzoned through the edit.

If you've ever seen Honnolds documentary you'll know he has absolutely zero fear complex and basically was happy to die free soloing at the time. Think his wife has reeled him in a bit now lol

zero fear and happy to die? People watch the documentary but fail to realize that Alex spent more than a decade preparing to free solo freerider he made many other free solos working up to that length and grade, also doing the route so many times he memorized every move to the point where it was like a walk in the park for him 'hard climbs come years before the crux'

One thing I’m curious about is how eating an energy bar positively impacts you at a moment like this, baseball player have long chewed sunflower seeds, gun, tobacco but it’s biggest thing is that it actually relaxes anxious nerve so in a situation where you probably need the energy burst and are that tense I genuinely curios of the benefit it has.
