I've worked in a pharmacy for nearly a decade and I'm sorry to say that's not how things work, bud. The pharmacy controls 0 about the pricing of your meds. Nobody behind the counter is just making up numbers and putting them on a bill. The pricing is set by the wholesalers. The amount you pay is set by your insurance. The pharmacy staff has no say in either of these things. What probably happened is that somebody found a "coupon code" that drug manufacturers offer for certain pricey drugs so that patients will actually buy them. The $120 figure is just an outrageous sticker price the wholesaler slaps on the med to try and milk as much out of your insurance as possible. Somebody behind the counter probably forgot to input the code during billing and that's why the $120 figure showed up first before it got fixed. Is the system screwed up and massively overcomplicated? Yes. But it's not because some pharm tech making minimum wage is twiddling their mustache and laughing maniacally while typing random dollar amounts into the computer. You want to blame somebody? Blame the lobbyists for the insurance companies and pharmaceutical firms that made these systems.

Insurance is the reason that exists tho. One of the reasons the disgusting prices matter is because insurance has so much market power they kinda decide what they pay. Like in that second video “we’ll pay you half of that” and they say “fine we’ll make something up” in a public healthcare system. It doesn’t matter what they do since that is between the government and and the hospitals and the price doesn’t get put on the people except in the form of taxes obv and then tax money and changes are easier than changing a private company’s prices

I'm a pharmacy Technician at probably the most egregious chain in the US. Their prices are higher than most other places you can get prescriptions. People believe my job is "Count and fill drug sell to customer, it should be fast like McDonalds drive thru." Every single soul no matter the age has no idea how insurance works so now we the pharmacy have to explain to people how THEIR INSURANCE PLAN WORKS. Listen people we don't make ur prices your insurance does. Don't yell at us and turn the 2 minutes it should take for your prescription into a half an hour process because you don't understand YOUR insurance. I don't understand your insurance either because we deal with so many different plans. I know this video wasn't about prescription coverage in total but Prior Authorizations (PA) are by far my favorite. Customer comes in yells that the prescription their doctor just sent over isnt ready yet and we can't fill it. "Well we can't fill it because your insurance doesn't want to cover it right now. So we sent a message to your doctor in order for them to talk to your insurance to let them know your doctor wants them to cover the prescription." Patients then say "Why wouldn't they cover it clearly my doctor wants me on it because they put me on the prescription". We then respond "Your doctor doesn't know what is on your formulary for you plan so we sent the message to your doctor they should get back to us within 2 days" Customer then says "2 DAYS IM SUPPOSED TO START THIS TODAY AND YOUR TELLING ME I HAVE TO WAIT 2 DAYS. THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE YOU PEOPLE ARENT DOING YOUR JOB" we then usually cut them off and then say "sir/ma'am we can't do anything about the prescription until we here back otherwise it won't be covered and cost you hundreds if not thousands of $." The customer usually then says "What's the point of paying for insurance if this shit is going to happen" we then respond "This happens all day everyday, just call your doctor to speed up the process." The customers then usually says "Well can you call the doctor?" We then usually try to say "Well sir/ma'am we already sent them a fax on our end so you should call" Customer then responds "Well can you call them I won't be able today, I'm really busy" We respond "sir/ma'am we literally have 500 other prescriptions we need to fill and worry about today alone. So no we will not call YOUR doctor or YOUR insurance to figure this out for YOU." They usually then get mad and leave. This happens everyday probably 2-3 times a day and takes like 15 mins to explain to a customer My fingers hurt after typing this so spelling errors I'm sure are abundant. PHARMACY TECHS rise. If you have questions I guess I can try to answer them about prescription insurances and how they work with pharmacy.

The wildest thing about corruption in healthcare is just how aware everyone is about it. We live in a society where knowledge is useless and money is power.
@e.d.57662 жыл бұрын
I don't think that's true. A lot of people conflate corporate lobbying with bribery, and there are cases where the lines are blurred, but they are very different. In almost every case, lobbying is ineffective if it's arguing for something that voters will oppose. The real problem is that there isn't a strong enough political will to change it. The best proposed plan was M4A, but there are a lot of problems with it so it's never had enough support. But most people want a different system, and it probably wouldn't be difficult to push a more incremental approach with a relatively small campaign. Assuming that it's all just corruption and nothing can be done about it is the worst thing you can do, because that's only true if nobody cares.

@@e.d.5766 You said it yourself. There are cases where lines are blurred, MANY CASES.
@e.d.57662 жыл бұрын
@@okman7504 I disagree. I think it seems like corporations have a huge amount of power because they mostly promote policies that nobody cares about. Sure, it would be a better democracy if voters were more considerate of these policies, there are policies that probably wouldn't have passed if voters were better informed about them, but there are also (and, I would say, more) examples of beneficial policies being passed by lobbying. It's a part of the democratic process, and, although it is corruptible, it's a good and important part. If lobbying prevents you from wanting to actively engage in politics, you're the reason why lobbying has power.
@JustAroadcone2 жыл бұрын
@@e.d.5766 Corporate lobbying only exists so there is pressure to do thing's the public would oppose, but would help the concerned industries. Also "Corporate lobbying" and "Bribery" are synonym's meant to make the bribery happening more socially acceptable.
@e.d.57662 жыл бұрын
@@JustAroadcone That isn't true. There are a lot of niche issues that corporations are going to run into that just an everyday citizen won't, so there are inevitably going to be policy decisions that are better for everything but that most people aren't aware of. That's what lobbying is for. And lobbying isn't when you give a politician money and ask them to do something for you, lobbyists are paid to convince politicians that a policy is actually good. If lobbyists just bribed politicians, there's no reason why corporations wouldn't just do that themselves. Although it is true that there is an advantage given to corporations because it is easier for them to, using lobbyists, present and advocate for a policy to a politician, corporations are also responsible for employing people and providing services that individuals don't, so it's (to some extent) important for them to have a greater impact on policies.

I used to be poor back in the day, here is an ambulance trick that I saw in the neighborhood quite often, if a "stranger" (neighbor, even someone passing by, anyone really that doesn't know you personally in a way that can be proven easily), calls 911 to get you emergency help and says you look like you are dying, having a stroke, having a seizure, or any number of other potentially fatal issues that could impact your mental facilities, then you can get fire departments to come get you and you likely won't be charged and even if you are you can fight it. Obviously a friend in a car is easier usually but sometimes you need an ambulance. This also only works in states that don't completely hate poor people. Glad I don't even have to think about having to do those kinds of antics now.

When the real nighmare isn't getting randomly shot by just about anyone carrying a gun, but the fact that they don't actually kill you so you're in debt forever.

Health Insurance mathematically cannot work. In all other forms of insurance (car, house, etc) there's a maximum amount the company has to worry about paying, which is the value of the item insured. If you totally wreck your car, all you can cost them is the price of a new car. If your house takes massive fire damage they can evaluate the cost of repairs and just tell you instead to buy a new house if the value insured was lower than the repairs. There is NO SUCH NUMBER for Healthcare. As such, there is no way to actually provide health "insurance" in a method that allows the company to actuarially define your insurance rates in a meaningful way. It's literally a scam continued forward by the momentum of markets and the size of the industry.

I was watching a video where a youtuber was talking about being away because he discovered he had cancer. craziest part was that if he was uninsured it would have cost him something like $30 for for the test or what ever they did to findout, but thank fully he had US health care so it only cost him $500........ it was more expensive because he was paying for insurance.....

Most health insurance have clauses for emergency care where they will treat the providers as in network regardless of where you go.

I had a head on collision where I totaled my car, the airbag deployed and knocked me out, and the truck that hit me was sitting on my windshield. And the only thing from the whole experience that I remember is telling the Firefighter who cut me out of my seat belt that I didn't want no fucking ambulance cause I'm broke. Turns out I woke up in the hospital and that MFer called an ambulance so I had to pay it.

God it's so bad. I've been looking in to how to keep my Medicaid and I couldn't even find my plan. I had to visit the site of the company providing my plan to get an idea because the government websites give no answers, require you to login, and regularly have one site saying another has your answer, but when you click on it that site claims the exact same thing of the orignal site.

My mother has MS and even WITH insurance her medication costs $7000/month. Her deductible is $7500 so every year she caps it by the end of the month, and then the insurance company drops her at the end of the year. EVERY SINGLE YEAR, she has to scramble before the end of the year to find a new insurance otherwise she dies. Such a cool system we have going on here that if my mom ever doesn't have 8k to drop in January she just gets to deteriorate a vegetable

I was a back seat passenger in an accident we weren’t at fault for. The ambulance charged me 899 dollars that my insurance wouldn’t cover. I was a quarter mile from the hospital. I got two stitches in my chin.

on the ambulance thing. My mom woke up and she was bleeding a lot out of her head and instead of calling 911 she drove cuz of ambulance costs. She ended up getting some in her eye and ran into a stop sign that fell on top of the car, totaling it.

Western Europe is the OG place to live for sure. Plenty of other problems but goverment run healthcare system and tax systems really make life a lot less stressful and allow normal people to at least try to work their way up. Trying to work hard to progress in the US is likely to cause some kind of illness from stress then it's all downhill from there.
