He took Magnus Midtbø and he was about to quit at the base and at the end of the climb he said was scared at some point.: kzbin.info/www/bejne/earckmVpgrWid6s . I guess it is not that easy for Alex to find free soling partners. kzbin.info/www/bejne/earckmVpgrWid6s

Have you ever climbed a ladder without setting up fall protection? Congratulations, you soloed it. Does your family condone that?
@tyrionas
@tyrionas Жыл бұрын
@@simonsimon9880 that analogy is wrong though, there are so much more things that can happen on a natural rock multipitch than on a ladder. the danger of soloing is not really about the difficulty of the route itself but the unexpected events that can happen (sudden bad weather, hold breaking, gust of wind, etc.)
@simonsimon9880
@simonsimon9880 Жыл бұрын
@DELBOURG matthieu, no, any work at height has the potential for a fall. In 2020, the US saw over 22,000 injuries from ladder falls, with 161 fatalities. I personally know someone who died putting up Christmas lights. Every year, millions of homeowners routinely and casually undertake this potentially dangerous activity without giving even a second thought to fall protection, but as soon as someone mentions free soloing, people lose their everlasting shit. Seriously, do you think *wind* only happens in the mountains? I assure you, residential neighborhoods also have gusts of wind. Sure, some routes have loose rock, but some homeowners have damaged ladders. Bastille crack sees enough traffic in a year that I would trust any single hold on it more than I trust the average eaves-trough. Frankly, knowing when to unrope is an important part of safe travel in the mountains, partly because of some of those other variables you pointed at. If a strong, experienced party unropes on easy terrain, they'll move twice as fast, and increase their chances of getting off the mou tain before the afternoon storm rolls in. Deciding to solo can actually make their day safer. And none of this even touches on soloing ice, which is quite common, due to the ice quality paradox. I won't go into it now, but feel free to ask me. Soloing is an important and normal part of climbing. Soloing injuries to experienced climbers are quite rare, and this idea that a family of experienced climbers might not "condone" it is laughable.
@tyrionas
@tyrionas Жыл бұрын
@@simonsimon9880 well I do agree that Raboutou's family probably don't have much issues with it if not worrying about him. But you are basically using a whatabout argument here. I do agree that ladders cause a lot of accidents and people are dying doing this kind of work. But it doesn't mean free soloing is safe or free of criticism. I think that if you climb a ladder without security gear you are as reckless as if you were free soloing. I do agree though that the perception of free soloing by the general public is very skewed and they see free soloers are reckless daredevils (which some are tbh). I am a mountaineer too so I understand the concepts you just described but it is always a trade off you do in order to maximize safety. Free soloing is not about maximizing safety though as they could do the climbs in a much safer manner if they wanted to.
