"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

Just a side note for recording people, definitely record things that are business related. If you're in a one-party state, just do it. My landlord lied to me over the phone once, made me think I gave notice then acted like I never did so I had to find them the next renter. It might have been genuine miscommunication, but always record things that could lead to verbal agreements.

I live in a one party consent state and I’ve recorded dozens of phone calls! Anytime that I deal with a customer service situation where I have something at stake, I’ll record the call so I have exact notes and that any future employee that picks up my case won’t renege the company’s previous solution. Almost any time I deal with an airline, an insurance agent, etc… if they say “This call is being recorded for quality and training purposes.” Then I hit record if it’s necessary.

Most ppl are only using it if they sent a message to the wrong person or if the message was so poorly written that instead of just editing it, they decide to start over lol. That being said I do agree with the recording phone calls thing because I literally won a case against someone in court by doing so and had I not I’m not sure it would’ve been as easy.

And you know that 25 is going to be as slanted towards Crowder's favor as possible, so I wouldn't be surprised many if not most of them are part-time or contractual rather than full-time, especially when he himself is not working full-time. I don't deny though that he can inflate his costs to justify his price. That's easy and common for any business to do. I can buy my equipment from my lower bracket buddy for 10x the market price, and write it off as cost of business for tax purposes, split the difference with my buddy. I report these numbers.

Gonna start picking your arguments apart here; On the budget: TDW wouldn't be giving Steven any crew, he'd be paying his own people out of pocket. he says he has about 25-30 employees, that he gives insurance to. So we'll just say 25 employees, fair wages, plus insurance, plus overhead for the business (rent, bills, equipment, etc) probably costs a fair amount. not to mention he has his own shit to take care of (wife, kids, his own insurance, mortgage or rent, utilities, food, etc) that 12.5 million disappears pretty quick. It doesn't even have a clause for that to be lifted when the strike is. Technically as written if he gets striked by KZbin 4x he loses the whole fee. The DW's contract clearly says that he must cover the cost of production and that they would own his product in perpetuity. Considering SC has a production team of 25+ people on salaries and that the contract also stated that if he failed to produce content or ad reads he would lose a percentage of the earnings, of which could amass up to a total of 110% reduction of earnings with each failing of each term, being that social media banning, KZbin banning or ad revenue loss and there were a few other stipulations that did indeed add up to this. This term sheet also made no mention of additional income made (sharing in profits from the extra audience SC would bring). I do think that it wasn't a good contract to be offered from a "Friend" of which he's known for years. There's quite a few videos around that break down the term sheet that Alex should have perhaps watched before his rant lol.

TYT has raised about $27 million from investors or their audience over the last 12 years. ($24 million of it came from Roemer and Katzenburg). For about that time (12 years), they've produced about 50-60 hours of weekly content (the main show, plus about 12-15 additional shows and podcasts, some daily and some weekly). With that much content, that's probably a staff of about 50 people (multiple camera people, audio, graphics, bookers, producers, makeup/hair, etc., plus the company has to have people for finances, legal, marketing, HR, tech, webmasters, etc.) An average of 10000 $10 per month subscribers is $12 million per year, plus there is some amount of KZbin money. Count it as $13 million per year, plus the $27 million in investments/fundraising over 12 years, and you're talking about $183 million dollars. Crowder's contract was for 4 years, so 1/3 of 12 years, which means about $61 million. I think Crowder was supposed to produce 4 hours a week (one hour per weekday, no Fridays). For that he wanted $50 million, while TYT during the same amount of years was giving roughly $61 million to 50 people who were putting out approximately 15 times more content. Also, Kyle is correct--I've watched Crowder's show. If he is employing 25 people, about 15 of them are playing Tetris in a closet somewhere. There's no way it takes more than 6 or 7 people to run that show. The graphics look highschool-level, there's clearly no research department, they rarely book guests, there are no "desk piece" segments like a late night comedy show, it's just a bunch of guys giving opinions about stuff.

It wasn’t about money it was about the aspects of the contract. That is a predatory contract! Crowder is one of the biggest voices in the conservative movement, it wasn’t about the money! First if he had been able to get the counter offer he would have been able to negotiate a contract that was in good faith. He would have had to put in add reads which would have changed the show completely, I despise anymore than 1 add read. He wouldn’t have been able to say the same things that he can say now. The audio was very clear that even they know it’s a slave contract! If have a show that makes you one of the top names in the conservative movement you know your value & what a crappy contract looks like! The amount of money he could have made for DW proves his value.
