Developed and published by Sega in 1987
In a time before Sonic the Hedgehog existed, Sega had something of an identity problem. Nintendo, their biggest rival, already had a mascot in the form of Mario, who was a massively bankable character even back then.
By comparison, Sega didn't really have any kind of character who was synonymous with the brand, at least not one that had any kind of universal appeal. Technically, Opa-Opa from Fantasy Zone was their mascot at the time, but a spaceship with wings and feet didn't seem like such hot property when faced with the might of the Mario juggernaut!
Alex Kidd in Miracle World is the first game that I remember featuring the character, largely because it came bundled with the Master System II console (built into ROM) released in the UK and other parts of the world.
The game features a highly convoluted and, frankly, weird plot, especially for a platform game. In essence, Alex Kidd is searching for his long lost brother, now hostage of Janken the Great, tyrant and ruler of the world of Radaxian. Just to make things worse, the normal, peace-loving citizens of Radaxian have all been turned to stone by Janken. It's up to Alex to locate his brother and defeat Janken to free the land from his evil grip.
If that wasn't strange enough for you, Alex has dedicated his life to studying the ancient technique of ShellCore, a martial arts skill that enables him to increase the size and power of his fist (sounds a bit like Marvel's Iron Fist to me).
The game is a side-scrolling platform game/collect-em-up that looks and feels similar to Nintendo's Super Mario Brothers in a number of ways.
Many of the levels feature numerous blocks and boulders that block Alex's path and must be removed to progress. Fortunately, Alex is in possession of both the necessary martial arts skills, as well as a massively over-sized fist, to get the job done. Certain blocks will reveal bags of cash that can be collected (to be spent in one of the game's shops), whilst others might reveal special items, or even enemies.
At the start of certain stages, Alex will find a shop where he can exchange his money for extra items and power-ups. Sometimes, these include a mode of transport, such as a car or helicopter that allows him to traverse a level much more quickly than on foot. Levels featuring the vehicles often have obstacles that will cause Alex to forfeit the vehicle when hit, so you should always be careful how fast you try to travel when using one.
Later levels in the game, such as the castle, tend to be less linear than earlier stages and feature items that progress the game's story and certain points. It's very easy to miss these items if you're not careful and certain characters won't reveal parts of the plot without them.
Of course, the other memorable thing about the game are the fight sequences when Alex must defeat opponents in a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but it's easier to embrace the weirdness than to keep questioning what's happening.
Visually, Alex Kidd in Miracle world is an attractive game that boasts some great graphics, smooth scrolling and an extremely vibrant colour palette; it's certainly a lot more striking than many contemporary games on the NES.
Audio is also very good, boasting many a cheery tune from the console's TI sound chip, helping to keep things interesting throughout.
Whilst Alex Kidd in Miracle World is a fine game, it doesn't quite have the same appeal as Super Mario Brothers. I know they're different styles of games, but I find it easier to relate to a slightly chubby, Italian plumber than the weird, human-chimp hybrid with over-sized ears that Alex Kidd appears to be.
Weirdness aside, if you're looking for a solid platformer with plenty of content that will keep you entertained for a few hours then Alex Kidd in Miracle world is certainly worth a look.

Weird?? It's not weird. What about titles like teddy boy or fantasy zone, they are much weirder than alex Kidd. If you think about it, sonic hedgehog or and other anthropomorphic game is also a lot weirder. I'm not criticizing, just my observations and opinion. Also is this is a computer simulation or actual person playing this walk through?

Right? I don't even know what he did with that ghost block, he walked on it twice and the ghosts killed each other? edit: So I looked it up and if you can trigger a ghost and escape it, the next question box will have an Alex Kidd (1up). Never knew that. Don't think it applies to the actual ghost block you walk on.

Paul M that parts probably the easier part on that level. When I was playing this as a kid I always died on that part but eventually realised if you just go left or right with the dpad and let Alex naturally float, he never touches the spikes. Looks crazy hard but once u realise that it’s easy.

Genuinely think this should go down as one of the best games of all time. If you're in your late 30's [EDIT: Early 40's now, comment is getting old] reading this, don't deny how it captivated you as a kid. The 8-bit music, the Jenkin matches, the helicopter, the scary castle... all captured our imagination.

This game is far harder than it looks. Unlike most other video games, if alex makes any contact with an enemy character, he automatically loses a life - in other words, it requires perfection. I applaud the highly skilled player here who appears to risk everything just to collect as much of the money bags as possible.

I heard about this game for a first time when he(Alex Kidd-back then I didn't know anything about this character)appeared in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing. Because Sega's mascot was part of my childhood(Sega Mega Drive instead of Sega Master System). This game was made by creator of Sonic the Hedgehog(Yuji Naka),right?

Oh man, this brings back memories of playing this at my friend Paul's house in '88-'89! I loved this game, and Shinobi...especially the arcade version of Shinobi, as they had a mini-arcade at the 7-11 by my Grandma's place, back than, and she'd give quarters to my friends and I when we'd visit her (she was about a mile or two from my parents' so I'd always visit). I was her only grandson, so she was always very good to me... Gosh, I miss her. She lived to see 100 years old, though! I can't complain about that. Also, even when she moved a little bit further away (30 minute drive), I visited her every single weekend, along with my wife who I met when Grandma was 97. I'm so greatful for all these wonderful memories!

Bons tempos.

To explain the "?" blocks for anyone who is curious: The items are in a set order according to what the designer wants. You always get a ring from the first ? block in level 1 if you break it. However, they are not set per block but per level so if you skipped the first ? block in level 1, the ring is in the next ? block. The way the game was designed (some hacks for the game are different), it's always the same order of "life, ring, ghost", looping over and over in a longer list and the level designer just set which item in that list to start with for each level. So if the one you just broke gave you a ghost, the next in that level is always a life. It's a cool mechanic once learned which gives a puzzle element to the game, checking for ways to despawn the ghost or escape if needed before destroying the block (destroying two other yellow blocks despawns the ghost), and attacking from the right direction if using a ring so as to not despawn useful items.

OMG.. thanks for sharing this video , I can remember the music and every step in this game, brings out my childhood memories, my cousin who lived in France sent me the Master system II console , I was in Sri Lanka at the time and we never had TVs with scart ports, so we had to wait for another year for my aunty to bring a TV from France . I might have played this 100 thousands times . But always got stuck at the end where you have a to collect the crown. Was a puzzle I was thinking about . Instead of crown , I used to get birds start chasing and gets killed when step over those tiles .I am 39 now . Thank you very much for sharing this video

@ultrairrelevantnobody1862
@ultrairrelevantnobody1862 2 жыл бұрын
That's mainly because Alex Kidd never stuck with a consistent playstyle and thus didn't know what it wanted to be, whereas Mario took the work smarter approach and just built upon what it had from the start. I could blame Sega as being incompetent, but to be fair no one back then had any idea on how to make consistent sequels besides Namco with their Pac-Man games. It seems like every second entry of game franchises back then felt the need to change the gameplay, including Mario 2. It’s fun to look back on, for better or worse.

No training. World of Longplays uses tool assists on emulators to get through. Even then, it doesn't take more than 55 minutes to get through the game (i did it in about 52 minutes 2 months ago), it's actually quite easy with the only 2 challenges being the bosses and figuring out their patterns and the forest level if it's played with the crappy original controller because it features a couple difficult jumps. Everything else is actually quite easy and i wonder to this day why so many idiots complain and act as if this is difficult.
@bekoriko2816

@@melaniel.4269 It's not really nice calling people idiots for no reason. We were children when we used to play this kinda games and it's just nostalgia that makes people watch it again and comment... anyway, 55 minutes sure, but you have to add to that all the times you had to be defeated in order to learn the combination to beat the bosses and go through it all agian... I don't know how old you are, but trolling randomly just because you are so cool to have finished this "childish" game is rather unpolite.
