GGD really needs to have your kit in their catalogue, especially that custom snare you got from Declan White. That thing sounds phenomenal, so much punch and clarity and an even attack.

Cool! This is the first time I've seen anyone else use the "skip two" method I use. I find it easier than the "star" method, and it has always served me well, no head damage or uneven wrinkles or anything. It's reassuring to see a pro using this method. That drum sounds killer, too! 🔥

Alex, great Video.... Appreciate the time and effort you put forth. Knowledge is Power. I agree that sounds Pretty sick !! I don't use Mics when I play. But no matter how I tune my DW Design Series Nickel over Brass 14 X 6.5 snare - I can't get to this sound!! Close, but not the same. I use a HD Dry batter head (I've tried UV 1 and UV2 & a Power Center /Dot head), not come up short?? In my zeal for that John Bonham - Ludwig Supraphonic sound I came across an interesting "Hack". A few weeks ago, while playing at home (I am not a Gigging drummer - jsut a recreational one , retired guy at 71 YO who resurrected playing after 50 Years [1969], I placed my Dw snare on top of my 16 inch Floor Tom to get it out of my way. Doing a Fill, I hit the DW snare and BINGO....That was the sound!! I posted this Inquiry on many Drum Forums. Posters said that i was playing 2 Drums simultaneously ; one poster said jokingly, that I may have invented a new Snare Stand!! If I take the Snare off the Floor tom, it is not the same!! I just retrieved my old Floor Tom to "experiment" with this. I use a PDP Concept maple 6 drum Kit. The DW is an extra Snare. FTR, I use a HD Dry batter head on the PDP maple snare too.

When changing heads I also use some white lithium grease on the screws. Getting the screws all evenly finger tight will be easier with well lubricated screws.

Great video, thank you! Personally I love Rob Brown's method the most, but Alex is by far my favourite drummer (don't tell Rob...). Really interesting that Alex doesn't fuss much over the bottom head - love his approach and acknowledgement of how subjective the whole thing is. There're just so many ways to tune a drum!

Jamie, As a 71 yo, resurrected "drummer" after 50 Years [1969], I've come to learn now, what an art Drum Tuning is. Back then [1967-69] I knew Nothing of Drum Tuning; I just played with my HS mates in a garage band. I agree with you I too like Rob Brown's videos. "For God's Sake, It's Not Rocket Science". But, I have found / leaned that drum tuning is a bit of Rocket Science or a learned Art. Throw in some OCD [I have it], and that forces the seeking of perfection :):)

The problem I have with tuning a snare is I think I get a good pitch and tone but my sticks seem super bouncy.

Its meant to be bouncy dude, rebound!
@andys3035

@@Jackdrumss lol, true! But there's a different bounce on my practice pad compared to the snare.
@DuNordavind
@DuNordavind 2 жыл бұрын
@@andys3035 But you're always better off basing your technique off the rebound from actual drums than the rebound from a practice pad. The pad's there to simulate drums, not the other way around, and at the end of the day your technique is there to be used on drums and cymbals, not on pads. If your snare sounds good to you, my opinion is you should probably adjust and learn to play it comfortably as it is instead of tuning it differently to suit your existing technique.
