Man, what a clown. - It isn’t a server rack, it’s a comms rack. - That switch isn’t super powerful, it’s got a switching capacity of 50gbps. Enough for home use, but don’t say super powerful. It isn’t. - What the fuck was that that cable termination supposed to be? No more than quarter of an inch of untwisted cable should be from the outer jacket... I am pleased people like you are out there, you’re keeping proper network engineers in work mopping up that shit.

With such terminations for the wireless AP you will probably just get cat5 speed, 100base networking speed or worse. Having the excess wires hanging like that's gonna create alot of noise in the signal! Crimp it till the wire goes inside the plug!

Extend LAN cable? Crimp the plug in the wall? This is botch and has nothing to do with a professional network. I miss monitoring for the temperature and overvoltage protection. Normally, the LAN cables end up in modules in the cabinet. And many other details that unfortunately I can not formulate because my English is too bad.
@markloughtonUK

Lukull89 what would you have done to extend the cables instead bearing in mind they are plastered into the wall at the other end ? What would you do instead of crimping the plug ? Not trying to be funny here. I am genuinely interested to know how you would have done it ?

First, I'm from Germany. In Germany, it is mandatory to lay data cables in empty pipes. Even if it is not a duty, you should do it. Ask Thomas Nagy her on YT. Empty pipes are very cheap. One pulls in the cables only then, when it comes to the installation. So fits the length. To extend the cables there are special sleeves that hold the shield upright. Here's an example (sorry, in german): www.kabelscheune.de/Netzwerkstecker-Netzwerkzubehoer/Cat-7-Kabelverbinder-vollgeschirmt-8-polig-kompakte-Bauform.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwj4zaBRABEiwA0xwsP10XL4GAGryyFBBhXR69X2sLLhticte5erGn86NgW1meB8JUS68mLBoC8loQAvD_BwE Instead of the plug, a keystone module should be connected. And this also properly installed, so that the cable can not be torn out of the wall. Keystone: www.kabelscheune.de/Netzwerkdosen/Keystone-Cat-6a-Modular-Jack-RJ45-10-GBit-s.html And frame: gt-netstore.de/kupfer-netzwerk-verkabelung/cat.6-komponenten/370/2-fach-dose-fuer-keystone-module-ral9010?gclid=CjwKCAjwj4zaBRABEiwA0xwsP_H1M8tXYhSpy_cURW9_z-5Wc3TY8EwGThL1qJvFPO3DXZY6ybJPvBoC3EIQAvD_BwE I hope you can understand my google translate english. I think the only reason he didn't to that is because the building company didn't leave enough cable length for him to do so, and since it wont be moving around and isn't exposed I guess it doesn't matter as much as it does with an exposed cable.
@JoshHodgson

Nah can be done easy with that length , i also noticed he was using "noobish" rj45 connectors . I have never seen any you can poke through all the cables and snip off !

@brodiehaward 6 жыл бұрын
I highly doubt a maximum of 5 cm exposed cable is going to make that big of a difference, especially considering that is exactly how cables wired into patch panels and Ethernet sockets are left. If that were the case then the whole networking industry would have been doing it wrong for decades... as long as the rest of the cable run going up to the attic is not damaged then there is no issue here.
@Max34557

Exactly.... He tries to make up for it by saying "You won't see it anyways"... So that's a reason to do a shitty job at crimping ethernet..??

Not to be rude, in the attic will cook then good, :/ 2nd get a proper patch panel. 3rd put the network rack “not server rack” in a cooler place since the fans would run harder drawing more power and reducing life of the device possible voiding your warranty. Source Network Engineer at my company

So.. your reason for mounting your rack in the attic is "Yes, I know it's really warm up here.. actually so warm that I don't want to stay up here for long! but... I don't have room downstairs! I knooow it's a crazy fire hazard.. I knoooow that my equipment might die faster! But.. oh well. .I can't find that tiny amount of space, somewhere inside the house.. sooo.. normally network equipment doesn't get too hot- at least with the new stuff but with a large POE switch and high power router the heat might cause the large POE switch power supply to not last as long and the router to run hotter, but I don't think that it will make a huge difference to be honest. The biggest problem will probably be the dust build up mixed with the heat, since attics get pretty dusty.

Rack should have cooling if its getting a NAS. That attic will easily exceed switch operating temps in the summer. Rack should have a patch panel and proper length drops. Drops should not be terminated with a crimp end. drops should also never be extended, cat6 cable is cheap enough.

I can almost guarantee that if he was to crimp that cable properly, he would get much better internet speeds At 11:16. Also, you should never cut, or crimp data cables that are terminated into a POE switch that is actively supplying power. Unplug the network switch end of the cable before working on the other end because you can blow out the built in POE injector in the switch by shorting out all the wires. Also, happy late birthday.
@mihumono
@mihumono 5 жыл бұрын
Doubt it would do anything even if you shorted all the wires together. It is monitoring the line for a device that requires PoE, and then negotiate and supply the power.
@Milhouz
@Milhouz 6 жыл бұрын
Just a heads up that when you crimped the end of the connector down in the kitchen you left way too much cable exposed out of the shielding. This will cause lots of Near End Cross-talk (NEXT) that could degrade the signal further you should leave as much sleeping as physically possible. Other than that the network is looking good! I run the EdgeMax series line myself at home and I'm a network engineer by day on a University Campus. I look froward to seeing more of the network installs!

The UniFi In-Walls are only supposed to be for single room coverage. They are generally used in hotels where small "spot" coverage is required inside the hotel room, hence why you have had "issues". I hope you dont make CAT5/6 Cables off like that for your clients

Hey Alex I live in Missouri in the US where it is nice and hot and I have put my rack in the attic too and it is an enclose rack like yours but what I have done is actually cut a hole in the ceiling of my upstairs and put a vent cover over it in the corner to where you can’t see the hole just looks like a vent. and in the attic I have taken your standard flex tubing that usually use for a dryer and secured that to the hole in the ceiling and drilled a hole in my rack on the bottom and attached the tubing to that too and on the inside of the rack I have taken a high flow 12 V dc fan and put it inside the rack over that tubing To drawl air from the inside of my house where it is climate controlled and put it into my rack to keep stuff cool. Uses very little power and is silent. Has worked great for me so I figured I would share that with you.

Oh and btw I have the fan on a thermostat that turns it on automatically when it gets too warm in the cabinet and shuts it off once it is cool enough. Also serves good during the winter when it’s cold in the attic but warm in the house bc I get natural heat flow into my cabinet through the tube with the fan turned off. Here’s the link to the thermostat that I used. rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F263711238333

One small bit of constructive criticism and general good rule of thumb: Don't crimp or cut an active cable (one end plugged in) whether it's phone or ethernet, The knife edge that cuts the core can cause a short and end up with a dead port on the switch, granted most gear can protect against it etc but still a good rule of thumb Lesson learned after cutting an internal phone line and blowing the fuse in the exchange... whoops Keep it up, and keep on learning

'5G' is used in cell signal standards (3G 4G). My ears curled when i hear '5G' used for describing WIFI by a tech. That is boat loads confusing for describing tech. At least use '5G Wifi". I think that is like calling a SSD a Hard Drive. It is just not. '5G' WiFi is correctly known as WiFi 'ac', or 802.11ac for any tech buffs out there. 5G WiFi is essentially the next WiFi standard. In the past we've had WiFi 'a', 'b', 'g' and 'n', with 'n' being, until recently, the most modern and the fastest of the available options.

When your stripping your cat 5/6 cable here is a tip. The outer sheathing strip off you can use on each pair of twisted wire groups. Place the sheathing over one of the wires in the pair that's twisted. Spin the sheathing and it will slide down between the twisted wire and spit them apart faster. When your pull up on the sheathing squeeze and it will slide and make the wire straight. repeat on all paired wires hope you find this useful .

Happy Belated B-day Alex. Thanks for sharing. Don't worry about us Yanks critisizing your pronuciation of the English language. We are confused ourselves. For example the word route (street), we say rowt, or root. We don't even know whats correct. Hope you had a great B-day!

I prefer to use UniFi at a lot of installs because of the flexibility it gives in management. It's about 1/5 the cost of Cisco/HP it's been stable for my clients for years. What's the most equipment you've had managed by a CloudKey?

Router, Switch & PDU and heat isn't a issue??? Should be!! Especially if you plan on closing up your cabinet. Maybe consider adding a side fan or two to blow out the hot air?? Hot air can make your equipment work harder.
