I was in and out of great Ormond Street as a kid, as was my sister, both for severe reflux. My sister had a hole in her oesophagus at one point, and the saved both our lives. Bless the NHS and bless great Ormond Street, most of all bless the doctors nurses, and everyone else that keeps such an amazing place running xxx

Rosie Clarke I nearly died of reflux (20% chance of survival without an operation ) unfortunately I live in the USA so no NHS fortunately my dad had good insurance. I can’t image how parents coup with losing a child because they could not pay for an operation.

I’ll never understand the miss treatment of nurses and doctors by the government, it’s stupid how little they get payed for the hours that they work and the lives that they save, we should be putting less money into creating weapons to wage war and more into keeping the NHS stable and making sure that the amazing doctors and nurses in the UK get the pay that they deserve

We forget sometimes that hidden behind the comedy that is shared on this show, there is often tragedy that fuels it. The wonderful thing is that we can share these moments and feel them together as people. I feel lucky that the only thing I've been in hospital for is gromits, but I know many others that have needed the NHS a lot in their life and even with all the faults, I'd never want to lose it.

I have Cerebral Palsy, unfortunately (if you look at it like that) I was born before SDR surgery was being offered, in this country anyway. I see young kids having SDR nowadays and am insanely jealous- for really what my life could have been, as it seems so enhancing to theirs. But Alex struck a chord with me there. The NHS care I have received has been brilliant, and has enabled me to live as a content and independent life as I can thus far. I had never really fully appreciated that before. So happy birthday NHS- as we celebrate the last 70 years, lets look forward to what will hopefully be many, many more!

Couldn't agree more! I treasure our universal health system in Australia but unfortunately, socialism is seen as a dirty word here too, especially in the eyes of our current conservative Government, and they are doing all they can to get rid of it. They know there will be an outcry if they do it all at once so they're trying to do it bit by bit. For all our sakes I hope they get voted out at the next election before they get their way. Health care should not be something that only the wealthy can afford.

We have public medicine here in Hong Kong, a legacy from when we were a British territory. Even if neither the NHS, or our Hospital Authority are 100% perfect they are a huge blessing that need holding on to come what may.

My cousin was born in Great Ormond Street and will be backwards and forwards there until he’s at least 18. The work they do it beyond incredible and this video had me in tears, especially when Alex started to tear up. I was in Great Ormond Street Hospital myself as a child having growth tests , spent a week in there with them , and was luckily to be able to see what goes on. I get emotional like lovely Alex at that place.

The NHS is incredible.....as a child I spent a lot of time in Booth Hall Children’s Hospital and then in Manchester Children’s Hospital.....I went from a child who couldn’t walk or use her hands and many other joints because of Juvenile Arthritis to eventually an adult who is able to be independent......through years of dedicated physios, doctors, orthotics, nurses and even the weird clown who would come round to the wards and scare the absolute shit out of me....and all of that was free for me as a kid and now as an adult who still regularly had check ups I think it’s amazing that the UK offers this.......forever grateful !!

Let us not bicker or complain about minor issues...we are all human....the NHS is also run by humans....cut them some slack....raise concerns that are real and major and a genuine cause for concern...and not moan becausr your having a bad day. Hey Alex, Josh & Adam I just wanted to say how lovely it was watching this clip in particular. At the age of 22 month old I had a stroke and spent a great deal of time in Great Ormond Street . I lost the use of my right hand and some brain damage . Without there help I don't know where I would be today I am always so thankful. I'm now 24 and have taught myself to play instruments with one hand and always have in my mind that I should not let my disablity stop me . Thank you for having this amazing show . Delilah

If it wasn't for the NHS I could be dead or "unstable" now. (Turns out I have epilepsy and nearly died having a seizure a week before my 9th birthday. If they didn't diagnose me I wouldn't be on medication, I could be dead and if I was alive my seizures would be more often and worse). I can't thank them enough they saved my life and when I was scared or insecure they not only told me about my condition but offered help and advice from people with my condition so I could understand it more too. I can't thank them enough for everything they've done for me and my family. They helped my dad after he was hit by a car, they helped my grandma when she had kidney issues, they helped my mum after she lost nearly 2 pints of blood while she was in labor, they helped my brother when he injured himself (not naming where) and they helped so many other people no matter what. I love them ❤

It's thanks to the brilliant NHS staff at the LRI hospital both my children are alive. My eldest had a twisted testicle at birth and had to have an operation at 24hrs old to remove it .and had to spend time in the NICU and my youngest was born 4 weeks premature and had breathing complications and was rushed to the NICU to help him breath. Thanks to the amazing work the NHS did my children are happy lively preteens .

Great lemons street is amazing. Spending 8 years in and out of there I can relate so much to the pride alex feels. Nurses and doctors who stay after hours as they did just this Thursday when I was in make the NHS what it is and is so amazing and the research and advances are making kids and adults elsewhere are brilliant.

Born in Stafford hospital and was in and out between 1990 and 1994 with skin infections from my eczema, my severe asthma and so on and could spend weeks there at a time. They treated me, my parents and every other person, man, woman and child like royalty. So when it appeared on the news that it was failing I had no words.

a few years ago I spent 6 days in ICU hooked up to all sorts of machines.... as an Australian it cost me nothing! after reading a heap of horror stories from around the world I'm very thankful to have grown up in a country with free health care.

I had lower jaw surgery when I was a child the surgeon not only fixed my chin and teeth he also changed my life I don't get picked on by my appearance any more and I'm beautiful I am so so thankful to the nhs and everything that they do for us they are so dedicated and are pure angels god bless to all of the amazing surgeons for the incredible work that they do for us 24/7 xxx

I can think of only three countries outside of the UK that have NHS style healthcare implementation as policy; Canada, New Zealand and France. There are others that have similar doctrine but are structured differently.

I am an American and I have Medicaid insurance. This government-funded insurance doesn't cover much except basic care. I have to pay for all surgeries, medications, and specialized care. I have iron-deficiency anemia and pre-diabetes. I need to see a nutritionist and diabetic specialist. I will have to pay for each appointment on my own. Since I am unemployment and in school, I don't know how I could. They also closed the hospital closest to my home. There is a hospital(owned by the same company) about 20 minutes away, but it is not accessible by public transport. My insurance will pay for part of the taxi cost. The NHS would be great in the USA, but our government would get in the way of progress, just like it does now.

In short, yes. The current government is deliberately underfunding it (they claim there is 'no magic money tree' unless it's for bombing foreign countries or paying other parties to vote the same way as the government) and undermining the doctors and nurses by forcing them to work dangerous hours for an unfair wage. Already I have seen gofundme campaigns so that people can get the drugs they need to live because the NHS says it doesn't have enough money to pay for it. The idea that anyone would have to beg for money so they can get treatment should never happen in a civilised society. The health secretary (who was moved to foreign secretary two days ago as the previous foreign secretary resigned) even co-authored a book on replacing the NHS with a semi-private system. I understand that several people in government have, or are married to people to have, financial interests in private healthcare companies. It is in their interest to privatise our healthcare system and this directly harms normal people. The vast VAST majority of British people want to keep our NHS as it is one of the best things about living in the UK.
