I haven't heard Slaughter To Prevail and Alex Terrible's insane vocals for a couple years now ever since "Demolisher", and I ask myself why. Then Tank the Tech reaches out to me about his insane concert experience where Alex projects his harsh vocals throughout the venue without a microphone, and it piqued my interest. So we're diving back in to STP to see how Alex's vocals have evolved!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Slaughter To Prevail performing "Viking" for the first time.

If you'll ever convince Alex Terrible for a 'camera down the throat' test/ documentary, I'm pretty sure the video will be trending on YT. So many people are wondering: 'Is he human?' 'How can he do that?' and others who still can't believe his vocals are real but processed. I can imagine lots of questions will be answered. I watched the one you did with Will Ramos and I was amazed about the detailed insight and to see how his false and real vocal folds are working up, close and personal. This magnificent song is like a milestone in their career. A step up the game phase, if you will. It have groove, excellent pinch harmonics and riffs, out of this world drumage and Alligator Man, in perfect unit. The fact this band made deathcore genre more accessible for non initiated, represent a big part of their ever growing popularity.

There's a band called Step To Every Pit I ran sound for on a couple shows, and I had to put a -20db pad on the vocalists mic, and still turn down his volume. Out of all the metal shows I've done sound for, that's the only show I had to do that with. It was absolutely bonkers. I feel like the same thing probably happens with Alex 😅

@@IvyWillowMusicI seen a comment on another video that claimed something about Nik Nocturnal mentioning he was given Alex’s spare microphone to do a guest vocal live in his city on stage, and afterwards he made the comment (supposedly) that you couldn’t hear Nick because the mic was turned down A LOT so you’re probably right about sound engineers having to pad Alex’s voice.

I got goosebumps head to toe the first time I heard the chorus, and when he sings "do you understand that we have the same home?" as it comes off as such an impassioned plea for people to find ways to unite with each other, no matter how different we think we are. It fits even more now that I've done my research on Alex and know how against violence and war he really is.

Talking about how loud he can be, there's a live performance from a few weeks ago on Alex's channel where he had the audience get quiet and then did some of his growls _without the mic_ and you could hear it clear as day. Slaughter To Prevail LIVE Inkcarceration Fest 2023 is the name of the video, 15:41 for a timestamp in that video. Careful because right after that he beats himself in the head with the mic until he bleeds. That really deep growl he does, I swear in his Doom BFG song he sounds like a drainage pipe or something. It's crazy. If you haven't listened to it, the song Baba Yaga is one where he alternates a lot more between clean vocals and growls. He _almost_ sings in this song.

I would recommend doing "Baba Yaga", "1984", "Agony", or "Doomslayer" next (but all of them at some point, they are EXCELLENT songs). "Baba Yaga" has alittle bit more cleans, "Agony" is abit older, "1984" is an anti-war song, and "Doomslayer" is a sideproject. Also he has a one-take playthrough of this song you can check out on your own time (or as a reaction, would not hold it against you as I love this song)

Hey Elizabeth that sliding "alarm" sound you're hearing in the song is an effect pedal on one of the guitars. I believe it's called a whammy pedal. Jack Simmons is a hell of a guitarist and comes up with awesome ideas to inject into the song.

I still adore it when Elizabeth listens to and analyzes metal music with harsh vocals. Her reactions are priceless when she squeals like a giddy schoolgirl at a particular harsh vocal or interesting instrumental technique. A note-worthy moment in this reaction video for me was @10:05, which I thought was hilarious. This is how women like Elizabeth are going to pick up guys from now on! 😆 For sure!

I want to say that i really love watching these videos. Not necessarily because i want to learn how to do harsh vocals but because i learned how much work and effort goes into producing these vocals. I wanted to say that i would really love to see another deep dive into Ne Obliviscaris. My favorite song from them is Forget Not which i find is incredibly melodic even with some very harsh vocals. The violin playing in Forget Not is also amazing. I would really love to see your thoughts on that one.

Hi Elizabeth! I love your videos so much. That “alarm sound” is courtesy of a DigiTech Whammy pedal on the guitar (or another brand that does the same), and it jumps the guitar’s note up 2 octaves. Same technique for Tom Morello’s signature sounds and a lot of those “panic chord” sounds in modern metalcore music. Super cool, distinct sound!

There's the band "Iwrestledabearonce" and then there's Alex who actually wrestled a bear AT LEAST once. His voice is just primal. Also, that "siren" sound you were talking about is the guitar going through a whammy pedal. Same effect as the main riff in Pantera's "Becoming".
