I have had both of them I'd suggest new users to go with echo dot 3rd generation there is not much difference, it's just the design and speaker placement rest is same adn you'll save some money.

I must have bought a defective 4th gen echo dot bc it doesn't have nearly as much bass or clarity as my 3rd gen. this 4th gen model has the mid's too high (built in equalizer doesn't have enough) and it's washing out the quality. Anywho my 3rd gen sounds like an angel with nice bass and clarity for an $18 speaker. 100% returning this 4th gen and getting another 3rd gen lmao

It's actually a sphere, which is a dot in 3D, just as a sphere looks like a dot in 2D 😉
