First off so glad he’s okay and my heart sincerely goes out to them all. This has always been a fear of mine and I highly recommend using pool noodles if you have toddlers or soon to be toddlers. They work really great. Just cut them in half long ways and place on both sides of the door. You can even use it underneath the door if you have a large enough gap between the door and the floor. It can work as a doorstop if you have carpet, but most likely they will use their baby strength and still push it closed but they won’t be able to close it super fast. The noodle by the hinge will allow enough space to prevent pinching if the door closes, but it won’t close all the way. The door will just bounce back. You can also purchase bumpers online instead of using noodles and there are companies that make accordion like protectors that blocks the gap by the hinge completely, and you can still close the door if you don’t want to always have to remember to put the bumper on.

I also had my son’s finger in the hinge when he was only 4 months old and it was pinched flat I couldn’t get it out. I screamed so much, called the ambulance to come and help. I tried opening the cabinet door but it squished his finger even more, I didn’t know how a hinge worked - i closed the door finally and his finger got freed. It was the worst day of my life knowing I wasn’t able react calmly. Luckily his finger healed.

My oldest kids would manage to close the door hinge on my youngest child when she was between 2-5 yrs old. It happened so many times I thought surely her lil finger is coming off soon. Luckily it did not and everyone eventually learned to pay attention before closing/opening doors. Even opening the door can create a smash injury if their finger is near the gap of the door frame and door. 😬
