Accidently?? lol Ernest Duchesne (30 May 1874 - 12 April 1912) was a French physician who noted molds kill bacteria. He made this discovery 32 years before Alexander Fleming discovered the antibiotic properties of penicillin, but his research went unnoticed. then Flemming read his thesis 32 years after, and descovered penicillin

Its funny how Howard floreys and Ernest Chains efforts to realise the true potential of penicillin is rarely discussed.. After all, they shared the Nobel prize in medicine for their work on Penicillin along with fleming.
@devilzwishbone7 жыл бұрын
TERRIBLE! If the Open University is advertising this kind of data as being an example of what you could learn, I would stay clear. Given that Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin however by no means was he responsible for the extraction process which this video is alluding to Fleming has always credited Florey, Chain and heatley for their work at Oxford even tho History mainly remembers Fleming as the hero For me personally they all equally played a part Without Fleming's work, Florey, Chain and Heatley would of had no Penicillin project But Fleming abandoned his discovery claiming it would not work on living tissue without doing animal studies / tests and did not extract the penicillin for use Something of which Florey, Chain and Heatley spent a great amount of time (4-5 yrs I believe it was) testing, scraping together as they barely got any funding as the efforts were focused on the war, they had successful rat/mice trials but found it difficult to produce enough for successful human cures, eventually they succeeded and they treated many at the Radcliffe hospital. Florey and Chain published an article in the paper showing they were working on Alexander Fleming's work which caused him to come up to Oxford and visit Florey and Chain to see their progress and was shown the extraction process they developed, when one of Fleming's personal friends fell ill to Meningitis, Florey assisted and a full recovery was made, this caused Fleming to spoken about and media attention focused on Fleming, not Florey or Chain, even less on Hartley who helped to create a method which would boost productivity Chain suggested to patent the method, but Florey refused, eventually the Americans patented Penicillin extraction process and ironically charged Oxford university in which Florey and Chain attended for the use of their invention WOW stab in the back of what But hey, no different to how Steve Jobs took all the credit for how Steve Wozniak created and invented the Apple1 in a garage, Yet Steve Jobs was the famous face of Apple we all come to associate apple with.

I agree with most of the stuff u said but u do realise that Fleming is a mong and there was no spore flying through the window story it was a spore flying in from the stairwell as him colleague was working on fungus Also Joseph Lister also did some work on the penicillium mould before "discovered" it and it had also been used frequently in ancient time. Flemming didn't spend 2 years extracting the active ingredient of penicillium making only enough to test on mice once He put no hard work or effort in and only showed up when it started becoming big Sure he can claim rights over the penicillium mould but he didn't discover penicillium. I guess NASA was right to name a crater on the moon by him because that crATER IS AS EMPTY AND COLD AS FLEMMING'S SOUL Ye sorry he rlly pisses me off

@@aimenfatima7713 aaaactually he's sort of taking too much credit. He's a bit of a mong, he say recorded and concluded that it's not gonna work on human flesh just as Joseph Lister before him did but later he lied and said it was because he didn't have funding. Also he got his best mate at st Mary's hospital to campaign for Fleming getting a Nobel peace prize which would also benefit the hospital and increase its funding. He didn't discover penicillin even if he did rlly want to take credit he could have for the penicillium mould but not penicillium. Basically what I'm trying to say is Flemings soul is as cold and dark as the moon crater NASA named after him

@@aailaiqbal3983 One would argue that even by accident it's still a discovery. He wanted to find a way to fight the 'super bug' which was staphylococcus which was a big issue during WW1 and he did even if it was by chance. Fleming helped develop the link between this penicillin mould and killing staphylococcus but strangely did little with this.
