Ahhhhhh I just rewatched this movie. I first saw it when I was only 12 and I don't think I really understood it because upon rewatching it I was like OMG THEY'RE LOVERS???!!!!! YEEEESSSS!!!!!!!! 8D It's so great that the directors chose to depict the romance of the time so realistically and shamelessly so. It was quite popular and normal for men in that age, especially those of higher stature, to have male lovers and female wives/concubines to bear heirs.

Please let's not get into this. This video was just made for fun. And really, unless you knew them, there's no way to know for sure what their feelings were. Cultures change and I think I've heard that back in those times, it wasn't considered all that strange for men to be very close. Apparently there were some things that suggested they may have had a romantic/sexual relationship but nothing can be proven for sure.

@serreosoo8 - thank you for that explanation - when one looking at texts from a certain time period one needs to also look at the meaning of the text for that time to understand and not make assumptions. The original greek word for love (agape) has 5 different strong meanings depending on context, just as you pointed out. A modern example, simple but effective to prove this point is (ironically) the word GAY itself. Up until the early 60's it meant happy or joyous... now it means homosexual..

@TheEmpress666 I'm not going to deny that he was bisexual, but there really is no way to know. Just because someone has a partner of the opposite sex doesn't mean that they're sexually attracted to them. For someone of his position it was important to produce an heir, which is where the importance of the marriage comes in. Not saying he didn't love her or was also sexually attracted to her, of course...

Its easy to understand. Ancient greeks respected, loved and had great admiration for anything beautifull(beautifull not with modern standards but sth that was harmonic), from men or women to buildings. Thats why they competed naked in olympics, cause they believed that human body was not something to hide, especially when they celebrated human body achievments. Ancient greeks always chased perfection(the harmony) in all aspects, spiritually and physically.

Because of this movie I read historical books about Alexander the Great and there are theories from real historians that Alexander and Hephaistion were indeed lovers. Though we will never know the truth, I like to think that (and it was normal for the era). Anyway I love this movie and the relation depicted. It made me cry a lot. I didn't know Jared Leto was a singer when I watch this but Lord he is beautiful. Did you know that the body of Alexander the Great was lost, it makes me mad.

@55cabgirl - movies and self-proclaimed experts will tell us that the only reason he married Roxanne was to A) have a child to be his heir, and B) to solidify an alliance with Roxannes father, the king of her people. But Alexander had virtually as many wives as he did cities named after him... he may not have taken them all with him after moving on in his campaign, but then again, Ploutarch says he had one of his officers widow as his mistress (who apparently did go along)

@cathleen99 - having a personal opinion is a human right.... but adapting and tweeking historical events or details of them to suite our personal preferences and to make them sound more to our own liking, is tantamount to sacrilege. Strategos is not giving his personal point of view, he is merely pointing out recorded facts to dispute a theory... theories are speculations created to sway a fact to a possibility that suits our own preference... remember what that is tantamount to...? think on it

Our three Greek historians (Arrian, Diodorus and Plutarch) never term him erastes or eromenos, only philos or malista timomenos. Alexander himself calls him philalexandros (friend of Alexander). Curtius and Justin use only amicus, never amans. The only implication of a sexual relationship or use of the term eromenos for Hephaistion occurs in late sources or those of dubious authorship.
@cathleen9913 жыл бұрын
@ellinokanados You know all historians have their own opinion, for example Peter Green wrote that Hephaistion was Alexander's favorite. I understand that in Oliver's film that relationship was "own creation" but really if you read Rufus or Arrian or Plutarch you can see this. Those fonts are based on Ptolemy and as we know Ptolemy fight with other diadochs for hegemony, what he wrote was not 100% trustworthy. So as prof. Worthington say "we must create Alexander" from that pieces we've got.
@ellinokanados13 жыл бұрын
@Nahayu1211 - not entirely true... they didnt have their own families with them (most of them)... but along with their supplies, they had those that prepared their meals (while they were out fighting), and in most cases if they didnt bring a mistress along, they picked one up from the people whose towns they conquered. one needs to think things through a little more.....

You've crafted a beautiful video & story; I only wish I'd discovered it earlier. I hope yiou approve of my posting & featuring it on my channel. You've also caused the usual controversy & the homophobes have crawled out of the woodwork. No one studied Alexander - to the extreme that MARY RENAULY did (Even learning ancient Greek!)' and anyone who doubts Alexanders love of Hephaistion must read her trilogy on Phillip & Alexander's time (Especially "THE PERSIAN BOY" - a great classic!).

"You are the most hideous and malign of all men, have you ever seen me involved in such dirty work that you found the urge to flatter me with such hedonistic business?" Bagoas was a male boy like those in this story. Why would Alexander have Bagoas as "lover" when he hate it?
@ellinokanados13 жыл бұрын
@Strategos300 - Ploutarch wrote that he (Alexander) was greatly offended by the suggestion that he would appreciate having a beautiful young male sent to him to be his lover... but notice that many of these self-proclaimed experts dont even bother looking at Ploutarch.... what gives?

@waitingxbyxmoonlight - someone said that the homophobes were coming out of the woodwork defending Alexander is hetero, etc... they are not homophobes... these are people who care about one thing: if you're going to portray a historical event, then present the historical facts and leave the speculation out of it. This movie focuses so much on the speculation and the 'what's-gonna-sell-more' aspect of things, that it diminishes its historical value. that's what started the whole debate about it

it is unfortunate that we live in an era where people's understanding of historic events and cultures comes from a movie directors perspective. When we rely on movies to teach us about history, instead of actually researching the information in the multitudes of dusting reference encyclopedia (which have been well researched... unlike wikipedia), then it is no wonder that people's views have become distorted - we have now begun to believe as fact that which suites our own needs and preferences..
@ellinokanados13 жыл бұрын
@waitingxbyxmoonlight - it angers people since there is more evidence to suggest that he was not gay than there is suggesting he was - by time Ploutarch wrote Alexanders biography, homosexuality had become accepted and normal, yet he makes no mention of such about him - if Alexander was indeed gay, there would have been no reason to omit such a fact at that time. Also, Ploutarch goes on to say that he had multiple wives plus a mistress - unfortunately being gay is more popular this day and age
@ellinokanados13 жыл бұрын
@MrGBOOK - i would prefer to read the earliest of the bios on Alexander written by Ploutarch - written at a time when homsxlity was prevalent, and would have easily been accepted in his writing, Ploutarch not only fails to mentions the notion, but also narrates him as having multiple wives and a mistress. It seems, as homsxlity has become more accepted, to the point of promotion, certain interpretations have also changed to adapt to the new norms... those contesting the claim are not homophobes

When he was young his father took both male and female to his bed, and parhaps Alexander didnt want to flaunt his sexuality because he hated be comparison to his father . That is interesting, but then look at this: "When Philoxenus, the leader of the seashore, wrote to Alexander that there was a youth in Ionia whose beauty has yet to be seen and asked him in a letter if he (Alexander) would like him (the boy) to be sent over, he (Alexander) responded in a strict and disgusted manner:

@waitingxbyxmoonlight - people fail to grasp that in proper english (spoken many years ago) the term "Intimate companion" had NO sexual meaning whatsoever. Referring to someone as their intimate companion was like calling him (or her) their 'best friend' or 'pal'... someone who you would trust with your most secret of secrets with - jesus had 12 intimate companions... does that mean that he and his apostles were gay? Our vocabulary has changed and not for the better (gay used to mean happy)...
@cathleen9913 жыл бұрын
@ellinokanados Hey I wrote that 1 year ago and if we talk about Plutarchos he wrote not an facts but a biography, as he mention on the beginning of his work, so historians are skeptical about his relation. All of our fonts about Alexander are not trustworthy. Now I know that we cannot say about ancient Greeks "bi" or Gay", cause sexuality was so much different then. Those are words from our times. There in ancient times homosexuality was natural, in some twisted way that we cannot understand.
@waitingxbyxmoonlight15 жыл бұрын
I just used Windows Movie Maker for this one.

unfortunately, most later and modern sources show a lack of understanding of the original texts, and people today, wanting to promote acceptance, prefer to go with that flow rather then bring out the true relation (as in this case). Greek is a complex language: i.e, there are 5 Greek words that are all translated into the 1 English word Love; therefore there is a willful distortion of this story in depicting that emotion, although the original Greek renderings are precise as you have mentioned.

@Strategos300 Where do you find "quotes" of Alexander - you write nonsense! First, the only reference to "eromenos" with Alexander is Bagos (Alexanders "Persian Boy", celebrated in Mary Renault's classic of the same name!). And while all are said to "have loved Alexander" by historians, the only one "Alexander loved" was said to be Hephaistion. Texts reveal the King visited Roxane infrequently and conceived a child only after Hephaistion's death caused a grief stricken/drunken visit to her.
@cathleen9914 жыл бұрын
@Strategos300 Personally I have nothing against you. You have right to have your opinion about History, we all have that right, and if you don't like that paring just don't watch all of those AMV's. @aldonka1668 Alexander and Hephaistion were utterly andtotally in love with each other. Various historians of the time point that out. Labels like gays and straight didn't exist at the time, didn't matter. Also, I don't see why the fact that 'they were gay', if you want to classify it like that in a very narrow minded way, would make you angry.

@Strategos300 Hey So You give ME Evidence that they wasnt lovers. (and I am talking real not some "he didnt say that he was his lover"). Its the same question. So dont be so big-headed and just dont watch this if you dont like this.
@cathleen9915 жыл бұрын
So we stay at the point we can't say what orientation Alexander was. But He would be a bisexual, so if someone like to think that he had some relationship with Hephaistion then dont argue with them as you with me or with the other "guy" you mention early, and just let it be.
@Strategos30015 жыл бұрын
This was in Alexanders Campaign, way later his fathers death. And you are saying "perhaps", you are not sure. Still, the experts say that we cant say that he was bisexual because there is no evidence of such. And the thing you told me about Bagoas. It doesn't say that Bagoas had intimet with Alexander, "and with whom Alexander would later be intimate." It only sais that Bagoas had plannes to have an intimate with Alexander. There is also no evidence that Bagoas and Alexander were lovers.
@cathleen9915 жыл бұрын
But that is the same when some people paring random actors with each others. And the point is that bisexualizm in ancient history was as popular as coca-cola in our time. And Alexander The great was a biisexual and this is a evidance about him and Bagoas-persian slave. So if he was a bisexual why dont Hephaistion? He was his closest , dearest friend.
