Generic greetings and welcome to the story of alexander kerensky, one of the greatest, if not the greatest generals to ever grace the inner sphere. The man who lead from the front during his early years, became comander in chief of the starleagues military and stopped the usurper steffan amaris. The man, the myth, the legend. His early life all the way to his final victory.

You clearly don't know your history from your memes and clearly just huff copium propaganda about current events. Separating memes from history there is a good reason Zhukov is considered by far the best general of WW2 and the person who really held the soviet union together during that period. There is a good reason Russia stands with the likes of Afganistan and Vietnam as countries who are willing to bleed and always end up victorious over invaders in the end. Its a different mentality and people would benefit far more from understanding it rather then reducing it to "ha ha le memes", after all "those who fail to understand history are doomed to repeat it".

Kernsky made two huge mistakes in his life. First was allowing Amaris get to power, the second was his choice of heir.
@mcchuggernaut9378
@mcchuggernaut9378 Жыл бұрын
Maybe, but from what I have gathered of the lore, Amaris didn't get to power through Kerensky's negligence. He tried to advise Richard not to trust him and to behave differently, but Richard surrounded himself with yes-men, and since Kerensky wasn't a yes-man, he got shipped off to the periphery to fight, while Amaris was retained close to Richard because he flattered him. Richard basically dug his own grave, and Kerensky tried to stop him but was prevented from helping by Richard at every turn. You can tell a child the stove is hot, but often they simply will not listen until they get burned, and Richard was a prime example. As for his second "mistake"... well, he didn't exactly place his son in power, the son took over after his death. Hard to call that a mistake, either. You can't influence events after you are dead. His son (Nicholas) basically capitalized on his father's fame to become a tyrant. So did he really "make" these "mistakes"? Can you even CALL them mistakes?

Kerensky didn’t get a choice in heir. Neither for the Camerons nor did he actually have an ‘heir’ when he died. His own son just fame leeched. As for Amaris, Kerensky did try as much as legally possible to keep Cameron from liking Amaris but Kerensky is loyal to the Star League, not Cameron, and this sliiiiight optic difference was what made Cameron view him as a nuisance and not his most vital support.

One wonders how the setting would have turned out if Kerensky had accepted the mantle of First Lord, rather than leading the Exodus. Though seeing as how his own efforts to create a mini-Inner Sphere out in wild space didn’t end well for him, it might’ve just delayed the Succession Wars rather than averting them.

Alex tries to hold the crumbling fort until Nicholas takes over, reverses the manpower drain to the successor states, reforms the Star League, skips the intermezzo and ends up putting the boot on the Inner Sphere's throat, we get a century of peace until the Successor States have rebuilt their armies and invade the Hegemony only to bump into the Clans who were hiding behind the SLDF and maul the Successor States with the various Clans carving out holdings from the IS around the Hegemony. It's the Clans except they have about 100 times the resources and manpower they have in the original timeline. All followed by 200 years of everyone trying to exterminate each other, some states break up, Clans are annihilated or absorbed into another Clan/House etc.

They did that story in an official what-if. He got assassinated on his first day, and the SLDF dissolved as the entire Inner Sphear descended into a worst civil war led by his two moronic sons before the Great Houses took over. So, it would be worst if he stayed in the immediate future. However, after the war, it oddly got better. For it forced everyone to acknowledge the flawed mess the Star League was, Comstar never came to be, technology did not regress, and it stopped all talk of Succession. In fact, it was more akin to the age of war of mostly border wars, but it did not experience wars to the level that would come after the First Succession War. Also, the Clans never came to be.

The most fun I've ever had playing the tabletop game involved reenacting the Battle of the Columbia River, the penultimate battle of the Star League Civil War, on the very grounds where it was canonically fought, Hayden Island in the middle of the river between Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington. (For context, Unity City, the capital city of the Star League, canonically sits where Gig Harbor, Washington does in our day and age. The best place to defend against the oncoming SLDF, from the point of view of Stefan Amaris, was along the coast to the west, up in the Cascade Mountains to the east, and along the Fraser and Columbia Rivers in the north and south respectively. Once one of those four final defense lines fell, which proved to be the Columbia, Amaris fled via highly armed and armoured jumpship to the Cameron family home in the Canadian wilderness, in what we know as Banff National Park. And, well, we all know how that ended.)

While the Rim Worlds Republic had over half their forces in the Hegemony, I wouldn't call it undefended. They had several times a great house military still there. Which makes the SLDF defeating over 200 defended worlds in about 2 years all the more astonishing. Fun as always, guys.

Even my favorite Clan Snow Raven did a little planet glassing after some dishonourable tactics inflicted some painful losses on them.
@Eserchie
@Eserchie Жыл бұрын
Kerensky was a good guy. The SLDF is a bit more complicated - Battletech draws a lot of it's cues from real history, being a bit more realistic and grounded of a setting than 40k, so there isn't really fixed "good guy" and "bad guy" factions - some trend more commonly to one end of the spectrum than the other, but like real world nations, how "good" they are varies with time, leadership and from where you are looking. Part of the reason Amaris was able to create the setup for his coup was that the periphery did not view the SLDF as good guys at all - they were the superior military force that had marched into their nations, nuked their planets and shot their soldiers, said "you belong to us now" and imposed new taxes. From the viewpoint of people living in the successor states and clans, having been through the trials of the succession wars and exodus, the SLDF were mythologized in much the same way as Rome was viewed during the renaissance.
@spartanonxy
@spartanonxy Жыл бұрын
So someone else explained it pretty well I will throw my answer in. Kerensky was a good guy through and through. He was a man who truly believed in the ideals of the Star League as flawed as they were. He despite everything hated pretty much only Amaris and not those who followed him. He didn't hate the Periphery despite being at war with them for years. He truly sought to protect the worlds of humanity to the point he let go of the sphere at the one time he had to despite how much he wanted to try and save it all because he knew if he stayed with the forces of the SLDF things WOULD be worse. The SLDF though is a organization and is like all other organizations a collection of shades of grey. They had members who gunned down non violent protesters, they had members who did the best they could during rescue work, they had members who made dissidents vanish and they had members who truly sought to protect the innocent. It was a force for "mostly" good while Kerensky led it but still answered to those in the highest halls of power who were not always so good. In the end Alexander Kerensky was a good man though his eldest son wasn't. The SLDF was a organization led by a good man who used it to the best of his abilities as a force for good but they were by no means universally good.

Kerensky was responsible for the single largest betrayal of a civilian population by its military in history, in the form of the single largest instance of dereliction of duty in history. He consigned the people of the Hegemony and of the rest of the Inner Sphere to literal centuries of butchery on an unprecedented scale, with effects dwarfing even the Amaris war. He didn't even try and fail, instead he straight-up abandoned his post and convinced nearly every viable replacement to do the same, only to lead them to their doom and set them up for his insane son to manipulate into becoming even worse monsters than Stephen Amaris himself.

It's not dereliction of duty when you've been relieved of duty. Kerensky's loyalty was to Star League. Not to the great houses, not to 'humanity', not to the Terran Hegemony, but Star League. Which no longer existed, as per the people who stripped him of his rank. So why stick around so you can get sucked into someone else's petty squabbles? He knew things were going to boil over into the great houses fighting each other and he thought the best thing he could do was to take as many of the battle-hardened veterans and as much of Star League's military equipment and just leave. How much worse would the Succession Wars have been if lostech had never been los?

Kerensky failed at the end. He should have stayed to keep the houses in check. What happened with the following succession wars would have been avoided if he did his duty to protect humanity instead of fleeing like a coward.

30 divisions is Nothing, for the size and objectives of the operation. The forces that attacked the city of Stalingrad during WW2 where 41 Divisions strong, the Normandy Landings involved 11 divisions. If and as he uses Russian nomenclature as he does at other points, that means Russian Division there even Smaller as an example the Battle of Berlin involved 231 Soviet divisions

The SLDF had their own org scheme. An SLDF division was closer to a WWII-era corps in size, containing 3 brigades with 3 regiments each, plus reserves, support units and it's own aerospace wing.

Kerensky's legacy is ultimately one of failure. Everything he fought for was lost because he did not have the fortitude to go all the way.

The more I get back into the lore, the more wildly overrated this guy becomes. Given how shitty the exodus and his son turn out, I can only imagine how he would of turned out as First Lord.

Ah yes, Alexsandr Sergeyevich Kerensky. Russian Mecha Combat God-Emperor. Commander General of the GREATEST inner Sphere fighting force ever. The original creator of some of the scariest f**king Inner Sphere Battlemechs(Atlas, Atlas II, King Crab, Devastator). Spec Ops MechWarrior who makes Almaris sympathizers sh*t their pants. And the original reason The Clans even exists. The Orion, his main Battlemech, also reflects the kind of person he is. Honest yet cunning, simple but powerful. It's fugly but there's no bullshit, no gimmicks, just raw strength & tactics. Also, a flawed person. He suffered from mental health issues due to stress & was basically a high-functioning sociopath. But Goddayum, does he get the job done.
