Hey Nick. My girlfriend and I just arrived at the Stoney River Lodge along Highway 34. We’re spending the next 3 nights here and exploring Estes Park and surroundings. We can see the fire damage on the hillside on the other side of the highway and it’s so sad. Totally agree with you that that guy should be locked up a long long time. Excited to see some of the areas where you’ve been hiking and I’ve watched in your videos for years.

I wonder if he's the same arsonist who started the Cameron Peak fire. Out of pure laziness and incompetence, the fire department labeled the fire "human caused" and then moved on, after having done only a very half assed investigation. I was there that morning having backpacked in State forest the night before and sumitting Clark Peak the morning of. It was a beautiful, clear morning, in the 70s. It rained the night before, no lightning. The morning of, I was the second person to discover the fire. A mysterious hiker in front of me was the first. He kept telling the hikers coming up Blue Lake Trail not to worry because "it's a controlled fire." When I told the hikers it was definitely not a controlled fire, they didn't take me seriously, and kept hiking. At the trailhead, this mysterious hiker was nowhere to be found. Fortunately, everyone at Blue Lake was helicopter rescued and the other hikers eventually turned around and made it back to the trailhead. As for the arsonist? Never caught. Nobody cared.

We’ve encountered him on the public roads by SDGR, your feelings are not wrongly placed. Keep up the good work! And kudos to Sheriff Feyen and his posse for quickly tracking this down!

Whoa! The fact that you had interaction with him is so wild. I thought it was crazy enough that he was an employee there

I feel your frustration here Nick. Very upsetting that people do this as well as when people are reckless with campfires. Of course there was more to this guy's story than recklessness; there was intent. But I see so many people making fires during restrictions, making fires outside of fire rings, and even playing with fire outside of fire rings. I hiked 100 miles of the Colorado Trail this summer. Day 2, I found a fire 3 feet from a fire ring, in a hole dug by a person, completely abandoned. It was in an 8 mile dry section between water sources and i could not believe I stumbled upon it. I have also noticed that the Roosevelt National Forest is significantly less managed than other national forests. I have been hiking in multiple areas in CO as well as up in the Wind River Range in Wyoming. Just about everywhere else, I have seen forest rangers directly employed with the forest service, trail maintenance crews, and cleaner forests. There are less dead trees, minor burns that were controlled to clean up the forest floor, and logging operations in these other areas. I feel disappointed all around, that people like this guy do this kind of stuff and that I feel like our forest up here is either under or mismanaged. I am happy that there are still little pockets of good places to go. Emmaline Lake Trail is one of my favorites. As always thank you for your videos!
