I don't think he was underated, but he was by no means over rated either. He had a lot of success, and a huge fan base across the world. He was big here in the UK, as were his stablemates, The S.O.S. Band.

Alex is only actually listed "album credit-wise" with S.O.S. Band on background vocals (along with Cherrelle) on the 1986 single "The Finest". Alexander O'Neal was more of a "protege" with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis=Flyte Tyme, and of course his primo 80s-90s solo work.

You Identified with it... Back in the 80's when we had Thursday Night "Ladies Night"... Man, every Club was PACKED... SMH!!!... I grew up in New Orleans and from Thursday thru Sunday the Social Night Life was "On and Poppin".... New Orleans hosted the "Worlds Fair Exposition in 1984"... I don’t think we have the singers or the songwriters anymore. So called Hip Hop culture has devoured songwriters and we already know what they’re about. Auto tunes and butt shots. The state of that culture is 👎 . I mean it has its place - the artists have to reflect their times but how about the transcendent qualities, the good/the God in us. There is still greatness in some Hip Hop artists like Kendrick Lamar but mostly the pretty or pleasing in R&Bis done and the latter certainly gave birth to the former. I guess it’s because the creatives are from down situations or thumbs down people or the industry just hates Black love and excellence. Idk. The true singers, well, I hear them all in Gospel, which is nice but we need the good news in the secular, too. I shouldn’t have to go to church to hear about love and the finer things. Dios mio!! I was born in Frankfurt, Germany as third son of spanish parents. At that time of this song I was 18. This song "Saturday love" hit my sould so much, as well as nearly all of R&R Music of that time. There was for me no other music, than black music. Chaka Khan, Gap Band, Dazz Band, Prince. And also for many people of my generation, especialliy, when you had foreign roots. I think we identified ourselves with you, as we also experienced kind of racisme, as we were darker, as the average german. I don't know, if you black american people realized how much you were admired and loved outside US for your spirit, your sensual and pure emotion transmitted through this music. You are just good people. This song will always reminds me of my first love, of course a young beautiful black american girl, with american father ( a soldier) and german mother. Unfortunately it was not satisfying love, as she broke my heart. Very hurting story for me until today. But this song reminds me of my feelings and let me feel a human being. Thank you Cherrelle and Alexander O'Neil and of course the swong writers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (if I remenber well).
