There's been a lot of discussion about current events in Afghanistan. There's a famous saying, "Afghanistan is the graveyard of empires". Has this always been the case? Let's look at Invicta's analysis of Alexander the Great's experience in Afghanistan!

You are thinking of Seleucus' war in India against Chandra Gupta. Alexander won his battle in India, but was forced to leave by his army refusing to go any further.

In regard to the Greco-Baktrians, this kingdom even expanded eastwards, while losing what would be considered the homeland of the kingdom (Afghanistan) to create what is now known as the Indo-Greek Kingdom over the Indus river. Founding at roughly 200BC under Demitrius I lasting until roughly 10AD with Strato III as the final king.

Now I realized how I don't know a thing about hom Macedon became this strong. Schools here taught us ancient history since elementary school, but in Greece's case it's always about the war between the Hellen states and the persians, then the peloponnesian war, Athenian culture... and then suddenly, Philippos II. But how, and why? I know nothing about that.

But the empire of Alexander the Great is well known to be the way that allowed ancient Greek culture to reach South Asia and meet with India. It is the main reason why Buddha turned from a symbolic icon to a human form.

Well kinda because many empires have tried to conquer the land but with its geography it's near impossible England tried,france tried,USSR tried, and the US tried
@flyingeagle3898

kinda, but the idea that it is some"graveyard of empires" doesn't make any sense at all to me given the context of many other empires/countries controlling the territory in the past. It is more a meme that has gotten out of hand. In the case of the US the cost in terms of casualties was incredibly minor, and even the monetary cost was not that big in recent years. What is true is the geography will make it hard to control for a distant power with little incentive to pay the long-term cost of administering the region.

I get what your trying to say but I don’t think so, only because the British never really had any control over Afghanistan. They only took control of the Durand line area (like 3 provinces in the south: Waziristan, kpk, balochistan). However the British did take over their foreign policy for around 40 years. The British weren’t even able to enter Afghanistan without permission from the king. They spent over 80 years trying to colonize them without any success. From the first Anglo-Afghan war in 1839, when the Afghans wiped out all of Britain’s invading army except one guy, who was left on purpose to tell their story, until the third Anglo-Afghan war which ended in 1919, when Britain eventually gave up on its conquest and recognized Afghanistan’s sovereignty.

I am confused by the statement that Alexander lost in India (~22:40). Could you elaborate on this, as well as on his supposed contacts with the Mauryan empire, which did not exist at the time. By all acounts, Alexander was victorious in his Indus valley campaign. Otherwise, it sounds like the territory of modern Afghanistan folded rather easily with most of the fighting taking place in Transoxiana, the lands of the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan...

If potentially debatable, for the conflict between Alexander and the Nanda could be discussed only in hypothetical terms, this is common knowledge. It still doesn't explain where Alexander lost in India...

After the attack on Afghanistan, Alexander had lost his past power and authority and that is why he could not open the country anymore. Just like the calamity that befell the Soviet Union, it did not take long for the Soviet Union to disintegrate after leaving Afghanistan.

The best thing Bessus could do for Alexander was kill Darius, then assume the title of king. If it weren't for the latter it is likely that Alexander would've pardoned him, as he did other murderers of Darius, at least initially.

I've argued with so many people about weather Alexander was Greek. I personally always felt that he was not and Macedonians were like a Greek side branch but still not Greek.
@greekmetalhead1805
@greekmetalhead1805 3 жыл бұрын
Let me ask you this. The Macedonians had Greek names, spoke Greek as their native tongue, worshiped the Greek Gods of Olympus, used a calendar consisting of Greek months (many of which were shared with other Greeks of Dorian descent like Spartans, Corinthians, Epidaurians etc.), and Alexander the Great proclaimed that he and the Macedonians were Greek in quite a few quotes that were written down by ancient Historians. My question is; what makes you feel that they weren't Greek?

He is Macedonian and ancient Greek
@alissa6
@alissa6 2 жыл бұрын
I think the reason why Macedon is always felt excluded like this, is because they've not always been Greek. Macedonia wasn't Greek in 900 BC but was a Greek speaking land by the time of Philip and Alexander. And if we add to the fact that Macedonia is not Greek today and that classical Greeks called the Macedonians as "barbarians" that adds fuel to all these things.
