I am curious if you have ever thought about expanding on this (yes, even longer) and doing a just-as-detailed history on all of the Byzantine Empire (It is so hard to find anything comprehensive out there). I recently started the History of Byzantium podcast by Robin Pierson which is excellent and thorough - was seeing a companion documentary done by you with multi-video documentaries on each of the dynasties to rule over the Empire (maybe he would even want to partner up as he has already done so much research!). Also would love to see an in-depth muti-doc series on other "forgotten realms" like the Seljuk Empire that would puzzle piece very nicely in to this documentary (eg. realms you never can find good info or documentaries on). @@FlashPointHx Fun fact if you're interested: There's a chapter in the Quran called "Al-Room" which means 'The Romans'. In this chapter it was prophesied that the Romans (who seemed to be marching towards their demise) would defeat the Sassanids. I initially didn't understand the importance of this prophecy as it's natural that wars don't have a clear winner at first so it's up to prediction. But after I watched your documentary I was shocked by the true severity of the situation for the Byzantines. From a hindsight they were surely going to lose. Ironically, had they lost, the Quran's validity (and thus Islam's) would've been seriously damaged... That's why I like Heraclius and his daring campaigns which bought Byzantium another 8 centuries of life!!
@shanemoore80553 жыл бұрын
@@deeipomar2366 How can that be a prophecy? By the time the Quran was written (7th century), the Roman empire was well`n truly "demised", by about 2-3 centuries. Unless it specifically refers to the Byzantium empire, then it would be interesting, but it doesnt. Seems this book is good in predicting the past.

The Mongols and Macedonians had massive armies, and achieved those things over years. Macedonians took Egypt from the Persians with the help of Egyptians that wanted to overthrow the Persians. Mongols did that systematically, not simultaneously, and over a long period of time. Islam also managed to spread much further and faster than conquest makes possible in the first generation. Look how old the oldest Mosque in China is. Look At Indonesia and Malaysia too. @@mintoo2cool

For me the dawn of monotheistic religions as Christianity and Islam with this obsession of conquering people in the name of God is just another misery this world had to suffer and many many many communities and languages lost for ever. Sorry, I don't want to be offensive but it's quite ironic both Christians and Muslims claim to be peaceful or wish for peace when they have such a history. And they don't look still to change their minds about the obsession of imposing the "One True God".

@@FlashPointHx I agree 100%. The Angelos dynasty was probably the worst in the 1000 years long history of the "Byzantine" empire. Their actions and antagonism actually lead to the barbaric sack of the greatest city on earth at the time, by the westerners. The last Constantine was a leader material, but unfortunately lived when the empire was a shadow of its former-self and couldn't have really changed its fortunes.

But then again Islam is 600 years younger than christianity. 600 years ago... in the 1400s... christianity was pretty fundamentalist too. I am impressed by the fact that you are constantly calling Byzantium "Eastern ROMAN empire", striping it from any Greek element! You know, I am a Greek of Byzantine descent. I am married to a Greek Constantinopolitan lady whose parental family was living in Constantinople - probably ever since the city was founded by Constantine. Her ancestors were NOT some kind of "immigrants" in Constantinople. They were Greek - Byzantines, the dominant ethnicity in Byzantium (and especially in Constantinople)! In 1964 my wife's family was expelled by the Turks from Constantinople (the city that the Turks call it Istanbul - paraphrasing its Greek name). We preserve centuries old family heirlooms, books, ikons etc. from Constantinople, which are Greek in every sense! Me and my Constantinopolitan wife feel 100% Greek and we perceive our centuries old Byzantine/Constantinopolitan ancestors as Greeks (that's what history and our centuries old heirlooms are telling us)! We don't feel "Romans" dear "Flash Point History"! Neither we feel that our Byzantine ancestors were "Romans"! They were Greek - Byzantines in every sense!

@@FlashPointHx Greeks have consistently identified as Greeks and have always regarded the ancient Greeks as their ancestors. My family never referred to themselves as Ρωμιοί/Rhomioi (Romans). We have maintained our identity and certainly do not refer to ourselves as Romans. The Romans were considered inferior to the Hellenes. Who are you, and why do you speak of my ancestors with such limited knowledge? What is your educational background regarding my ancestors? Are you of Turkish, British, or American descent?

@@gregntavlis6521 you haven't realized that the Greeks despised the Romans, seeing them as illiterate brutes! Byzantium's backbone wasn't Rome but ancient Greece and the great Hellenistic civilization!
@gregntavlis6521Ай бұрын
@ThomasGazis yes the Greeks despised Roman and even other Greeks, because that's our nature. The Romans in the end proved superior though thanks to their unity and enslaved the Greek kingdoms. The city of Byzantium was Greek yes , but it was captured by the Roman legions like the rest of the Greek speaking regions. The majority of the emperors was not Greek or even Romans. To be called Greek was an insult meaning you were a pagan and you were hunted down and killed by the Christians.
