in addition to show the results at the top of each laptop I'd appreciate if you add a summary chart at the end, nothing fancy, it just that way we can just pause the video there instead of going back and forward if we want to know what the first machine result was. Love your content and I'm really appreciate it. Regards from DR

Which will result in people skipping to the end and just looking at the chart which has the results as you mentioned it would be great but then he will be at loss (Alex Ziskind). Regards Hamdan Khan

For the software encoding test it'd be useful to use a version of ffmpeg compiled with the cpu NEON extensions which the Mx arch has but most likely are not used.

One place where I use ffmpeg pretty frequently is to produce a video from the output of Gource, which makes a cool animation out of your git commit history. That's done by piping the output of gource directly to ffmpeg, and it can really take a while if your git history is very long.

A potentially interesting further stress test would be to take the script that generates all the different resolutions sequentially and change it to run all the ffmpeg commands simultaneously; put '&' on the end of every command, and add 'wait' to the end of the script, and all the ffmpegs will run concurrently, with the script not exiting until the last one finishes. If anything is going to soak up all available capacity, and drive the temperature up, it'll be something like this.
@AZisk
@AZisk Жыл бұрын
yes this would be good too, and would really get pretty hot
@toadlguy

ffmpeg will use all the available resources by default, so I don’t think that would actually change the results, but you could try it.
@frankwales
@frankwales Жыл бұрын
@@toadlguy I was thinking more 'stress test' than 'faster encoding', since several CPU/GPU saturating tasks that also do a bunch of I/O might tell you something about thermal handling, process handling or file system efficiency. (But then, I like hammering systems with unreasonable loads until they break, so I can get a sense of where their limits are.)

Those tests, the 4 machines against each other, I always like to see them. I can't wait for M3s to get out (if Apple keeps this way of naming them) and see more tests.

Funny as years ago I was looking for an easy method to test energy usage and temperatures under sustained load and measure the results. I’m not a coder so settled on handbrake in Linux using a tool that I could measure the results using Intel RAPL and output to a graph as it basically uses loads of resources at once. Geekbench was no good because it isn’t sustained load and now after following your channel for ages this pops up 😂

The Max chips have 2 encoders. Non max chips have only 1. Tested apps like Handbrake, Shutter Encoder, Resolve, and those apps are 2x faster on max vs pro. Ultras have 4 encoders.

those only kick in if you render two separate streams in parallel. it doesn't distribute a single task onto both encoders, afaik.

Tried to convert a 4k x265 video to 1080p AV1 using ffmpeg with Handbrake and gave up 15 minutes later (software encoder m2 pro max with 32gb) :))) it was so slow. Maybe in the future, we will get some gpu support.

Most of those parameters are unnecessary and also use h.264 which isn’t a great test (why not h.265), I believe x.264 only uses the CPU, not GPU Ffmpeg is one of the only things that are terrible on Apple silicon, I went from 50fps down to 3fps going from a Q6600 Intel to m1.
