The original "Hard Candy Christmas" was written by Carol Hall for the musical "The Best Little W********* in Texas." The original song was not expressly meant as a Christmas song. Dolly Parton's version was first released in October of 1982 and began to get airplay shortly after. The original phrase "Hard Candy Christmas" refers to a time when families who didn't have much money could only realistically afford to give hard candy in bulk to their Children during Christmas time. This metaphor suggests life can be both hard and sweet at the same time.

Saw you on Facebook in 2016 with Jolene. But didn't realize till my son seen you and Cooper in Detroit summer of 2021. And then saw your cmt interview. Now I'm a fave of all 3 of you. Especially you! As a former Entertainment writer and DJ I have never heard anyone match the intonation of Dolly Parton in the original, that is until I heard your version.
