Nothing ruins a no-makeup look more than clumpy mascara-- you nailed this. I've been doing something similar for years (I'm old), so this may help some folks who don't have a spoolie or a mascara brush on hand: You know those stubby little flat brushes many store-brands provide with a powder blush? They pretty much suck for applying blush, but they are the freakin' bomb for sweeping through lashes after applying mascara. Just hold it against your lashes and blink, and ta-daaaa-- you'll have nice, even, separated, natural-looking, clump-free lashes. Works with both regular and waterproof mascaras.

Two things: 1) the maybelline lash discovery mascara in waterproof has an even tinier wand that works PERFECTLY for coating lashes even from the back. 2) I have barely curlable lashes just like you. I’m a fan of Korean and Japanese make-up products and I order them from an international retailer, I think it’s totally worth it. So if anyone is interested in good brands for both natural and a bit more “done but not full-out there” looks, please check Clio and 3CE, they have amazing products.

Sensational! I was already planning to make a topic request: Mascara 101. I can't figure out which mascaras do what. I'd love to know the best type for different purposes and maybe top 2 recommendations for each. (Weddings. Working out/hot climate. Allergies. Contact lenses. Sensitive eyes. Long wear. Curl/noncurl. Spider lashes. Natural lashes, like today, etc.) I'm tired of wasteful experiments. Example: "Tubing" is not necessarily labeled on the container, and I'm in the minority that prefers to avoids those because two highly rated tubing mascaras bombed on me. I end up with tiny filaments inside my eye and across my undereye. Not cute. What are the code words? Which ones hold curl, which don't? Which ones are most prone to flake or smudge with lashes that touch the upper or lower lid? Decoding, hints, would be appreciated!

Tubing mascaras wash off with warm water - I believe that's how you tell before you buy - look for these instructions. This is SPECTACULAR!! I hate brown mascara on me because I usually use black eyeliner on top and it looks weird (also I have dark lashes). In my experience, tubing/fiber mascaras tend to have this "natural" look (and this tiny type of brush, as well). Which I love, I do not like the spidery, overly done look, unless I am wearing a ton of makeup (e.g. evening). You can build them up to varying extent, but they are definitely all more on the natural side (so that when you look at reviews of any of them, some people will even complain that "the mascara does not do anything", lol. :) ). E.g. the Glossier mascara, Clinique Power Lash, Victoria Beckham's mascara is also tubing, Mac has recently brought out one, and many brands nowadays have one type of tubing/fibre mascara. In my experience, they also hold a curl (the Glossier certainly does, it's my favourite so far, even though I am always looking for a good alternative; the main disadvantage of the Glossier one is that it dries out pretty quickly, but it's not a huge issue as it's quite inexpensive relative to more "luxury" brands, so I just replace it more often). I almost exclusively wear tubing/fibre mascaras, because most of the "standard" ones run/flake on me, including the waterproof ones. I have both watery eyes (bad for "normal" mascara), as well as relatively long lashes combined with oily eyelids and wear glasses (bad for waterproof mascara), so the tubing/fibre ones tend to perform the best on me, with minimal flaking/running (though some are better in this respect than others and if your eyes are watery all day long (allergies etc.), then even the most resistant mascara will fade at least a bit...).

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I'm a natural blonde with fair skin and undetectable blonde eyelashes until I apply mascara. But I'm a chill beachy girl and love the very light no-makeup makeup look. I've been through many mascaras and variations but this is the most perfect tutorial and if this products are still available (forgot to check the date) I'll be picking those up this weekend. Thank you.

Loved this tip - I'm so into more natural enhancement over a full makeup application ATM. definitely up for seeing more of these kind of tips :)

I don’t remember if you have tried the Sky High mascara from Maybelline, but I have had great luck with my lashes staying curled without it being waterproof. And it lasts without flaking or smudging. As an experiment, I’ve kept it on my lashes 3 days with no deterioration. I have never seen a tool like the one you used to feather out the lashes. They looked very natural but also well defined. Thanks for all the things you bring to us.
