to all the viewers, again, it's not Korean makeup, it's Chinese (not diaspora Chinese, but legit Chinese in China) beauty trend (and Douyin is tiktok's original form in its own homecountry China). it trends not only on Douyin but also the Red (小红书)and many many other Chinese social media, basically it's trend in China overall. it's very different to Korean makeup as it is more bold and has more variations in it's beauty standards.

It does originate in China, but the trend got popular online so some people might have been introduced to Korean or Japanese makeup artists and folks joining in! Not that it's the same as the Japanese style she's talking about. Alexandra may not realize it's more like, Japan, Korea, and China (as well as other parts of East Asia) have similar beauty standards and base makeup principals (dewy skin, large eyes, doll lips). You'll also see "douyin" looks tagged alongside "uzzlang". c:

Just some tips (not that you need them) for douyin base makeup. Chinese makeup is supper matte and high coverage, don't make the mistake of doing dewy barely there Korean makeup, they usually wear two blushes, one is very light-cool toned to brighten the under eyes and the other is going to do the actual blushing. They are extremely specific with contour, nose contour never makes your nose smaller but taller, never use bronzer and make sure to powder everything.

yeah i have a question regarding matte and high coverage, i see she used a very soft color to do the lower lashline and I feel like with that dewy base it wouldn't last very long, especially if you go out or if it's hot or humid. how can you make shadows or pencils last longer? if i don't use primer and thick concealer those very soft browns won't last AT ALL, esp considering my oily skin. I sometimes even wet the shadow/pencil before applying. what's the trick?

as an Asian woman who wears douyin makeup regularly, I have some constructive criticism: Wocan (or aegyosal in korean), is the pouch of fat under the eye. They usually emphasize it by using MATTE eyeshadow to highlight the fat and contour right below it. Glitter on that area is usually more of a Korean look than a Chinese look. The lower outer corner of the eye is extended with a reddish brown contour, liner, and false eyelashes drawn on. The whole point of the lashes is to have pointy clusters, giving a doll-like appearance (look up "manhua lashes"). They usually achieve this by using either individual clusters of falsies or a strip lash with that pattern. Douyin makeup should be matte and full coverage! the whole point of the look is to have clean, powdery, cloud-like skin. (Dewy makeup is currently more of a Korean trend) Nose contour is a big part of the look, and your nose should end up looking wide and "tall" (or protruding). You should use a cool toned, almost grey color for contour (fenty amber might work). Blush is almost always placed somewhere under the eye, never extending below the nose. They usually use blush to either bring attention to the center of the face or to diminish the appearance of cheekbones. Highlighter is usually placed in the inner corners, and on the nose in two dots (one at the tip, one at the bridge). Once again, the face should be MATTE !! So no face highlighter. While it's cool that you're trying out makeup styles from different cultures, you should watch a few tutorials from the women doing the makeup so you understand the key points of the style. Looking forward to seeing how you improve!

This is so informative! You obviously have a lot of knowledge about this style of makeup. Thank you for sharing the important aspects of how this look is typically achieved. I did have a question, though. Do you think that her prefacing with "my take on douyin makeup" would absolve her from needing to do this look the way it's traditionally achieved? The way I personally understood the video, it seemed like she was doing her own spin on the look rather than sticking strictly to it, but maybe you interpreted it differently. 🙂
@hilarykim4565
@hilarykim4565 Жыл бұрын
@@chambless09 I think that there are ways to interpret makeup styles into one's own style while still emulating the original inspiration! I don't expect her to wear big colored contacts or draw on fake lower lashes, but there are key points to douyin makeup (e.g. matte skin, cool contour, spiked lashes) that she missed. I think that her doing just one or two of these would justify the title of the video. To me it seemed she was a bit confused as to what douyin makeup is, especially since it's a specifically Chinese style (and isn't featured in a Japanese show or in other East Asian mainstream media because they all have their own distinct makeup styles). As far as I can tell, she just did her normal makeup but with pink eyeshadow, glitter, and a korean lip tint (none of which are special/unique to douyin makeup). Also, just because it's her take on the style, it doesn't mean that her interpretation is immune to criticism. While art is subjective, there are ways to interpret things in a way that is successful or unsuccessful/lacking, and I definitely felt that she fell in the latter category. These are my opinions as an artist and a makeup girlie ! Let me know what you think :)
@chambless09
@chambless09 Жыл бұрын
@Hilary Kim OK, I think I understand where you're coming from. It's not the fact that she is taking artistic liberties it's that you don't feel she used ANY of the core features of this make-up style. (Forgive the bad analogy), but it would be like doing a bunny makeup look/ costume but not having bunny ears or a fluffy tail. Obviously, this is very different since it isn't a costume. Thank you for taking the time to explain your opinion. I think I get where you're coming from now. 🙂👍

Whenever i see western influencers try East Asian makeup looks, the biggest mistake i see is how they do the eyeliner. They often do a much bigger and thicker eyeliner than intended, use black, thick and bold eyeliner and still follow the traditional western way of eyeliner which s upwards, creating a cat eye effect that is popular in western makeup. The point is to have a soft eyeliner, that is delicate and go downwards instead of upwards. Often times, brown eyeshadow or gel liner is used instead of a black liner, and if a felt or brush eyeliner is used, it’s still brown and very thin.

Yes ⬆️!!! I love Alex's simple looks! I am doing some OTT eye looks lately tho, having discovered that small hooded eyes & strong glasses are a superpower...now that they make pale shadows bright enough, I can define my tiny exposed eyelid with those, then truly go nuts as long as I keep vivids/shimmers below the crease. Turns out my natural architecture (ie my bony, poky face) & my glasses create a soft focus effect. If I use liner & a bright, light shadow, I can create all kinds of extra drama and it gets naturally dimmed a bit. I get to have fun with 6 color looks, but at work, there's just a hint of extra. I even managed to look professional at our free community holiday extravaganza (lol free face painting AND free santa photos, we live large here) with red glitter eyes lol. Alex helped me embrace my hooded eyes & enjoy the fun! Altho when I do certain tasks, then museum or park guests can see that the nice grownup hippy lady is actually wearing a "harlot" of makeup 😂😂😂 the old Olds do not approve.

Very pretty! If you wanna try more techniques, I would recommend using more glittery eyeshadows since they're used a lot in douyin and kbeauty looks. Also if you use a white eyeliner to draw a curved line (?) above your crease and then apply glitter over it, it really helps create that sparkly cut crease look you see a lot in douyin makeup. As for the under eyes, I've seen people use some concealer right below where they shaded the eye bag to clean it up (personally I focus more on brightening right under my eyes since I have hollow under eyes naturally and it can end up looking darker than I intended). Another technique I've been trying recently is placing blush closer to the eyes and also not taking it all the way up your cheekbones, kinda limiting it to where your eyes end I guess. Would love to see you try a full face :)

for your case, you already have existing eye bags (the area that most of Chinese influencers are lacking of anatomically) so you don't have to contour that while they will contour it using brown liner/darker shadow, but... you can achieve that soft yet still crisp lower liner to frame your eyes. with brown eyeliner and very fine brush. For instance, the makeup look originates not only on tiktok but chinese sites, where they go more indepth and take inspiration from Wayne Goss. Another tip which is central to Douyin is wearing colored contacts and pinching the eyelashes to make it look more distinct. You did a more simple style, which harkens more to Ulzzang

YEAAAHH I was one of the many who requested a video like that a few months ago? I tweeted something like that anyway. I’m so happy!!! 🥹 There are several types of douyin makeup ofc, and I mostly see 2 really popular styles: the cute ‘crying’ rabbit type makeup: wide blush that connects with pink/reddish eyeshadow, dewy skin, aegyosal (under eye fat) on full display, glossy lip, lots of glitter; and the more classic douyin makeup: matte eyeshadow, black cat eyeliner + inner corners, matte skin, individual V shaped lashes (manhua), and overdrawn blurry lips. I think both styles are great but I personally really like the latter, it’s badass yet very clean and minimal at the same time! I think the look is great Alex, if you’d like to explore different type of makeup styles around the world (particularly around East Asia but that’s my bias talking lol) I would LOVE IT~~ thank you 💗 *Edited to add:* C-Beauty suggestions: - Flower Knows - KALEIDOS (highly recommend the highlighters and contours) - ZEESEA - Judydoll - Perfect Diary - Colorkey - HEDONE *Edit 2:* an idea if you wanna try other countries’ makeup styles: doing a collab with a beauty influencer from that country and/or with that heritage; that way they could teach/show you and help you learn about local beauty brands/products, trends, and even the culture or the language! I think in this case it’d be helpful, and they could help your subscribers differentiate between types of makeup: Japanese, Korean, and Chinese- which have many variations ofc, just like there’s not one specific ‘American’ makeup. You could do it in person (but it’s not always possible) or just online! Plus it could help grow your own audience and theirs. Win win! You could even make it into a series lol. Free idea for you! I’m suggesting that because I see people kinda mixing everything up in the comments about East Asian makeup being all the same, and putting Korean/Japanese/Chinese styles in the same bag when it’s not, but I don’t fault people. They just need to be shown the differences and they’ll probably understand. But it’s not your role to educate them lol. I figure a collab is a way to do it + boost your channel + showcase some talented MUA/influencers!

I’d love to see more full face of Korean make up looks! I’m obsessed with the dewy glowy look. Maybe with color options, suggestions- like linked use this specific product & specific color. I am not the girl who plays well with makeup! I don’t think I actually see colors correctly. Like I can’t “pick a color similar to these shades” when people give general colors or shade advice. So I’m beyond appreciative for anything specific to try. I am cool toned with red undertones, blue eye, brunette. I have rosacea, I think a lot of people struggle with this, it’s well managed through Korean skin care! I would love some affordable specific suggestions for all the cool skin pinky cheeks gals like me! Amazon has great options of affordable Korean products. I just need to buy the right colors!

Love douyin makeup, but i would have never guessed the final look was supposed to be douyin makeup seeing it out of context. I'd (respectfully) love to see Alex doing douyin makeup again with the following changes: 1. Addition of the douyin style spikey "fairy"/"manga" lash style 😍 2. More accurate recreation of the lower lid trends. Typically douyin makeup involves contouring the under eye bag in the inner 2/3 of the eye and creating a false lower lash line that extends further outward than the true lash line on the outer half of the eye. 3. Adding matte blush high on the face and not adding contouring which makes the cheek bones look more prominent. 4. Lip liner contour on the inner lips + gloss I really think with those changes it would more clearly be douyin style makeup 🙏🙏🙏

When you create the false lower lashline on the outer 1/3, can some false lashes be added by drawing them? I' ve seen korean youtubers doing it but not sure if it' s as common in douyīn style. 🧛🏻‍♀️🖤

I'm not sure changing her eye shape would be appropriate since the lower lash look specifically is to accentuate a monolid/almond eye shape
@naomi-ft9rq
@naomi-ft9rq Жыл бұрын
@@coydogbb and yet a lot of the women wearing douyin makeup are using double eyelid tape/glue or already have a double eyelid. The extended lash line is to make the eyes appear larger and visually reduce this distance from the edge of the face and edge of the eye, minimizing zygomatic bones and making the eyes appear to take up a greater proportion of the the face. Contouring under eye bag also makes eyes appear larger while shortening the length of the mid-face. This has nothing to do with leaning into the monolid look.

Politics aside, after visiting the PRC in 1991, I am so happy to see Chinese people having fun with things like makeup! The stunning beauty of the architecture and landscapes there will blow you away, but it's fun to create beauty too, and back in '91, about half the people still wore the navy or olive matching sets and we only saw performers wearing cosmetics. For some reason, short fur coats were the RAGE in Japan that season, and there were armies of fur-covered ladies (verrrrrrrrry few non-Asian tourists, so we only saw Japanese ladies w this stuff), carrying around massive hauls of fine skincare & makeup from the foreigner stores, but the Chinese ladies were not allowed to go in those stores. I may have misunderstood some details of these stores, btw. The point is, it really makes me happy seeing Chinese people get to enjoy these things after their labors built the modern economy. If any *people* (again, not talking govt) of the world have earned some western-style luxuries, it is the people of the PRC.

Douyin *is* Chinese TikTok. Same company. Mostly Chinese celebs and influencers are on it doing their thing like mostly non-Chinese folks do on TikTok, including makeup. So "Douyin makeup" is Chinese makeup, which trends on Douyin. Also all the clips I've ever seen shared from Douyin have a little tag at the end that says "Douyin" which sounds like "doh-yin". I remember seeing those before I knew what TikTok was, lol.

I think the look is already giving but some parts/steps on the wings, lower part lines & aegyosal (underbag) steps is quite not right as how the asians usually did. Maybe you can see it clearly on how Pony did her regular eyelook & u will understand the standard way to create this douyin eyes. Peripera velvet ink is not a blur type one, they have a different one in packaging for a blur lip product. Rom&nd also have a tint called Blur Fudge tint. But overall it is still a look✨
