I work as a painter and use Advance pretty often. It’s not oil based. It’s a waterborne enamel, which is a hybrid between oil and water. It has water based clean up and is low odour, but the durability is more like oil paint. Oil can only be cleaned with solvent and is a LOT stinkier. I know Advance has a smell, but it’s really not even close to a traditional oil paint. The streakiness is from doing two coats in one day. Advance needs around 8-12 hours to cure before recoating. It has unusual components in it because it’s a hybrid, so there’s solvents you don’t normally get in acrylics. These solvents reactivate components in the previous coats making the previous coats gum up. You need to spray it if you’re doing two coats in one day. I’d also sand before priming, after priming, and between your first and second coat. If you don’t believe me, read the can. It’s on the back along the top, above all the other instructions. I’m pretty sure it’s got a little clock face beside it. Finally, next time, I would have the primer tinted. A lot of people don’t realize primer can be tinted. It can’t go as rich and deep as your teal colour, but a bit darker will help.

Good on you for going outside your comfort zone! Love the finished look. Tips for painting cabinets if you can't spray (which is ideal): 1) sand with a really fine grit sandpaper (220 or 300) between coats and 2) use a mini roller to backroll after painting with a paintbrush, this will help you eliminate the streakiness of the paint.

I love the colours and it's so different and rustic and I'd love it with a rustic eclectic maximalist style. But I'm sure that that's not what the owner would have wanted at all, she said she wanted it modern and airy and you accomplished that so well!! it really looks so so good and clean and suddenly like there's more space. I love the bold cabinets, but I think it needed that warm touch of a less prominent different colour. I don't like how the peel-and-stick tales look though, since they were running to finish on time I think you can tell where one sticker ends and where the other starts, and it bothers my OCD so much. But is a good learning experience that the smaller tile designs are trickier and if you don't have time or experience, it may be better to get a design with bigger tiles like the pink ones in her kitchen. But since they are so easy to peel off I think it's something easy to fix.

The reason I put renter-friendly ideas in the title it because even though this is a reno, there are lots of renter-friendly ideas layered in this video: changing the knobs, wallpapering the fridge and peel-and-stick backsplash to name a few! Not trying to mislead anyone, rather just making sure everyone (no matter if you rent or own) can get something out of the video. That’s all!!! 💕 Saying all that, the video title has been changed and renter-friendly has been removed ✨

Soooooo many comments critiquing here I thought the kitchen came out AMAZING!!! Compared to what she had before it was beautiful! I LOVED the wallpaper on the fridge turned it from an ugly white fridge to a beautiful piece of art!

Ok, so this is probably the first time I'm really kinda disappointed in one of her makeovers. This just proves that you really have to prepare and have the proper amount of time for something like this. You can see the rectangles of tiles she cut out, up close the cabinets were still a bit streaky. There were so many things she didn't do because there wasn't time. I love the vision, I just don't think it came out 100% 😕

There was an obvious line down the middle of the fridge too, where the two stickers met. I get the impression this was a very rushed job. Saying that, I liked the vision, especially the cupboard paint colour.

Weird thing with those stick on tiles is up close they looked fine..but the wide of to the side shot you could definately see the seam

She didn't degrease cabinets or lightly sand it before primer and painting. Prep work important.

Can we talk about how she manages to do ALL this eveb during a pandemic that too CONSISTENTLY
@tizgelmi3 жыл бұрын
It came out well anyways. I mean she took three days to make that, in three people. We are not counting the prep and online browsing for products. But once you have everything making it over in three days is good for everyone. Why is it unfair for the people offering their space?
@marissal97073 жыл бұрын
@@tizgelmi well, with speeding up a project, usually corners have to be cut, like prep. The paint needed more time to cure, I'm guessing none of the space was prepped with cleaning, sanding, etc. I saw paint spots on the floor from where paint was dropped...you might not be able to see the details, but the person that volunteered their space has to live with a poorly executed job that was rushed. I'd love to have her go back after the person has lived with the space for a few months to see how well it kept up. I'm betting that won't happen tho.
@tizgelmi3 жыл бұрын
@@marissal9707 i didnt notice them but to be honest if she did my space for free and installed all the products she gets for free, I‘d be more than happy to clean a few stains after she leaves...it‘s called being grateful.

@@tizgelmi exactly! if the only problem is the paint, i will gladly do it over on my own. the most important thing that she did is to TRANSFORM the whole space -i wont be mad with the paint issue tbh! im new in this channel and IM LOVING IT!!!

This is such a big project I would like to have you seen split into 2 episodes. I would loved to have seen you add storage and work space. Beautiful cabinet color!! I really liked how the tea towel repeated the shape from the drawer pulls. Thanks for a great half hour

the peel and stick backslash in my kitchen - i installed it a decade ago!! People still always think it is tile!
@GiseleZammit Жыл бұрын
That tile was sooooo beautiful, I really thought you would keep it in. It was neither dated nor un-modern-able and way more unique and amazing than the peel-and-stick boring one put instead.

Between the hexagons and the aqua color, it's like this reno was made for me. My condo kitchen is also feeling so old, and this is a great inspiration!

My primary take away - take the time to do it right. If that means adding a few days to the job, that's what it means. There isn't anything "wrong" with the design choices but even Alexandra spoke of making choices for time not money or preference. I think that making the choice to add a day or two, get the cabinet paint done right, order new fridge handles, etc. And it would have been a better outcome.

Hi Alexandra! I never write comments on KZbin, however I just wanted to say that I love your videos, I've been watching them since châtelaine days, so I really don't understand why some comments are always so negative when it truly shows the care and attention that you put in every detail. I know that not everything is gonna be perfect, but definitely the reaction of everyone that you've done their spaces reflects the impact of the make over. If someone did these changes to my kitchen as a professional Chef I would be thrilled! ✨ Love you're style and your team. Greetings from Mexico!

Alexandra! I have just started using Milanote 2 weeks ago and it is amazing!! I am opening a wellness center here in NY and I needed a place to organize all my ideas and keep track of everything. I love that you can link to items so when you are ready to buy, it's right there! I'm still learning how to use it, but so it's been a lifesaver!

I didn't think I'd be a fan of the wallpaper on the fridge, especially that print, but I have to admit that the very nature of the print creates an optical illusion that makes that huge fridge kind of disappear; which is a very good thing because it was oppressively big for such a tiny kitchen.

Okay, some of the comments need to lighten up. Alexandra doesn't claim she is a professional interior designer. She is doing renter friendly makeovers with small budgets and little time. Renter friendly means you may not be able to caulk the tile without ruining it when the renter needs to leave everything in original condition. Danielle, below, experienced in using Advance so often, is able to shed light on the paint and how it works but not everyone may be as experienced as she is with the paint. The overall look and feel is stunning. Love the integration of design elements and colors ie towels with cabinet/drawer pulls, fridge, light fixture, faucet and the very white stove.The cabinet color is beautiful. Great job team AG!
