could you say that the work ethic of girls was higher, therefore the pass mark was higher for them - in the 11+ exams, furthermore making them have to achieve higher grades

i believe it was due to less grammar schools for girls being around so they had to do better than boys

it was because girls were doing better than boys but they didn’t want an uneven number of girls to boys in grammar schools so the pass mark was higher for girls :)
