Loving all the interesting historical places in Alexandria! I'm a big history buff- so it looks like I'm really going to like this city. What I like about here is there are a lot of historical storefronts like the tavern and the apothecary. I appreciate more being in the place than learning about it at a big museum. Thanks bro!

Yes Alexandria has a lot of storefront style historical buildings and museums. You will definitely enjoy it!

What an amazing tour. I’ve never been to Alexandria but I hear good things. I had no idea that there were this many historic things to see. King street and the waterfront look like a good time too. Thanks again for always showing us cool stuff to see. Excellent video.

I live in Alexandria and love it. You don’t need a car in Old Town You can can take day trips to Harper’s Ferry, Occaquan, Fredericksburg.

Alexandria is a beautiful city with a lot of early American history, and you're right there are a lot of interesting places to visit close by. Harper's Ferry and Fredericksburg are coming soon so look out for those. Thanks for watching.

George Washington dreamed of making Alexandria one of the primary shipping ports in America, on a par with New York. He started a company whose goal was to make the Potomac navigable, and the main artery for transporting goods from the interior of the country to the Atlantic Ocean. Unfortunately, it just wasn't practical. The Potomac simply could not be made navigable for shipping given the state of technology at the time, and required portage and some points. Then the Erie Canal was built, and that ended the dream for good (though Washington was dead by then, anyway).

Oh wow. Thank you so much for this fascinating addition and piece of history. I have heard George Washington was interested in increasing Alexandria's prestige, but did not know the nuances of this effort involving the navigability of the Potomac. Thanks for watching!

You are very welcome. Supposedly, Washington was obsessed with the project from the time he surrendered his commission in the army until he became president, as anyone who visited Mount Vernon during this period could attest. There is a book on the subject titled The Grand Idea, by Joel Achenbach.@@ProjectGaiaTravel
