My avg monthly cost living in jakarta is around 700-800 usd per month for 2 people, ( i have my own house and car). But jakarta indeed pretty expensive city to live. I think since you stay in a nice 1 bedroom apartment (with direct access to mall), thus your accommodation cost is quiet expensive. And for your transport, foods, etc i think they pretty much ok for staying 1 month in jakarta.

I chose to live my typical lifestyle and have to live off of street food all the time, plus i wanted a nice apartment so i can get a lot of work done. Apartment rent typically cost more than comparable landed house in Jakarta (unless if you're aiming for elite areas). However landed house usually demand longer rent period (6mths & above). Also your laundry is indeed on the rather expensive side
@lydiah70553 жыл бұрын
West Jakarta is not actually an expensive area, his $667 is actually a fine price for an apartment in Jakarta. Place like Kemang Village (South Jakarta) would charge like $1000 for a month for studio/1 BR. Or with around $400 you can still get an older apartment, but usually not furnished. I think Alex' video is a pretty realistic one, nobody would just come to Jakarta and live cheap in BSD or Bekasi or something like that even though it's cheaper. It's just not realistic. I'm a Jakarta local and I spend around the same amount as well realistically (without trying to make it cheap). A bit comment though on your comparison to Bali, Bali is having pandemic price right now so it's not the usual price like when tourism is still on. In the end I believe the spend comparison is pretty much the same between Bali and Jakarta.

My dream is to move to Indonesia. Not to Jakarta--but someplace soothing and tropical. I'd like to work remotely for a US company so I can earn American money but stretch it amazingly far in Indonesia. The reality is the American Dream is dead. To achieve it you have to leave America to places where you don't have to work 80 hours a week to afford to live the sweet life. I don't mind giving up some Western comforts either. To not worry about money would be a dream come true.

I have lived in Jakarta since 2000. From renting room lodging (aka indekos), to cheap studio in a housing project (rusun), to renting medium apartment and now living in an apartment in embassy area (most of inhabitants are foreigners. Only about 20-30% WNI). The differentiating factor for cost in Jakarta is your accomodation. I own my place, so only pay utilities now. If I were to rent my 3B unit, it would cost me 1200-1700 USD a month. An 3B in a luxury apartment nearby would cost you 4000-6000 USD a month/1B prolly 2000-2500. And as it is listed in expensive area, the electricity, water bills are expensive. You can get 3B apartment in medium apartment such as Taman Rasuna for roughly half the price (and the utilities will also be cheaper). If you go lower, such as Basura or Kalibata City, it would be even cheaper. Cheapest would be renting a house. But even I dont wanna do that.... can be too much hassle

I think it really depends on the quality of life you want to get in Jakarta. Many Indonesian folks will say you can spend like < $500 / month in Jakarta. Sure, if you just rent a regular shared room in local housings/lodge with shared bathroom and kitchen, being cheapskate in any aspects. But if you want to keep the American / European lifestyle with nice, private apartment (which I can understand from foreigner POV), good quality of food, some drinks (alcohols are EXPENSIVE in Indonesia, compared to EU), of course that's gonna cost much more. Generally, you can find many choices depends on your budget. Sooo... I don't think it's fair to compare the local living and foreigner living. It's much more fairer to compare it with the living cost of the same quality in another city / country.

Taman Anggrek is indeed a little bit more on the medium-to-expensive range, especially with the fact that you booked it through Airbnb. But again, it's not a studio (which could go as low as 4.5, even exclusive kost2an (a type of housing) with breakfast and all could reach 3 mils/mo) and the base price for a month rent is usually more expensive by millions compared to a longer period of rent (3-12 months). For example, your apartment cost you approx. 9 mil for 1 mo. Multiply by 6 and it's gonna be 54-55 mils while you can push as low as 45 mils if you book it for 6 months (but well.....not like you wanna stay there for 6 mo lol) Plus, Bali as a tourist destination really dropped their prices to attract the current dwindling tourism due to Covid so some of the fare you paid in Bali were in discount

Your lifestyle here in Jakarta or Bali is like a dream for our most local people here because average sallary for staff employee in Jakarta is around 300 usd so most of us have to thinking how to survive in our country so we must smart to spend money and doing a lifestyle. Sometimes we okay to spend our money for like entertainment with family or hang out with friends or maybe order a good food or eat in a fancy restaurant but just for appreciate our work hard, but the rest we do usually life in standard like cooking for saving more money than order food. The fact is many locals here can’t afford yet to buy a landed house, many locals are still rent a house / contract (kontrakan).

I think that is actually quite accurate if we are counting for mid to upper budget for living in Jakarta, it does get quite expensive depend on where u live and what lifestyle or basic need you want to ask, and for foreigner I think the budget is quite on point. What i would like to mention is that there are quite alternative for those budget : 1. For living places, usually it would be better if you have someone who have experience and able to speak Indonesian because there are places which provide good places to live but dont ask you for that much, especially if you dont actually cook, you will have better option or u can rent a place that have a public kitchen. This places can be found on instagram with keyword kostjakarta. Info, this will provide you with cheaper option, depend on wha u need. 2. For that eating expenses, it does get quite expensive in Jakarta compare to most cities in Indonesia so.. Its hard to get around that, one of the option definitely find a time to cook when u are not busy or definitely use grab or gojek to buy food, not only will it give u cheaper price (with discount if you use it frequently), it will also deliver it to you so you dont have to bother being worry about what to eat if you are foreigner (remember to always pay the amount like what the apps shows u, cause sometimes there are individual who are a little bit naughty and ask for extra" 3. For Data, if you are using Telkomsel on daily basis, download the apps for it "Mytelkomsel". That apps will record everytime u increase ur balance or buy DATA, this way u will gain more poin and status and they will offer u cheaper option for Data if you gonna live in Indonesia for more than a month. Or, if you are living purely in Jakarta or just traveling to big cities, the other provider that I suggest you to consider is IM3 (Indosat) and XL. These 2 providers works as well as Telkomsel and at certain level XL is better in stability.
@InugamiML3 жыл бұрын
4. For transport.. I cant exactly help you on that, cause it does a little bit hard on big city like Jakarta for "tourist" staying for vacation, my advise if you are actually going to live for quite a longtime for work in Jakarta, just try read some rules and regulation for your own vehicles and then u can think about owning ur own. The only alternative is you always use public transportation or gojek or grab because its the only other cheaper option, they also give u lots of discount if u use OVO or gopay, its somekind of their own payment. 5. Restaurant - its expensive there are no going around that, nor alternatives. 6 entertainment.. Well.. I dont know much about entertainment there that can catch my interest anymore so i guess i have no info on that. 7. Miscellaneous - this.. Is where sometimes it gets tricky cause sometimes we dont knownwhat we are spending it for but we did buy things we dont need too or just on impulse in Jakarta, or just buy thinga online, but i dont think for foreigner will worry about that, but probably other than that concern its just small expenses that doesnt kill your pocket too much

Well if you stay in the south, the internet it's gonna be non an issue, living cost will be less than other part of jakarta, so much thing you can do interm of hanging out, places to go, etc. I recommended, get Smartfren SIM card, cheapest best cellular company you can get or IM3 from Indosat.

Less eating out....I live in South Jakarta and have a family. I don't even spend that much for a family of 4. Maybe it is because we don't go to fancy restaurants? We love the local food and food stalls. Live like a local, and the costs are much less expensive.

Basically Jakarta is one of cheapest city to live depanding on how u live, stay and ur activities. Half from ur budget was spent for ur accmdation And ur trsnport where u stay in west jkt but ur activities u spent was out of west jkt, for next better u choose to stay at Thamrin or sudirman area or atleast setiabudi area so u can easy to get everything u need and chaper than Where ubstay was due to the location And easy if u want to go to west, east, nortH or even to neigbour city like bogor or bekasi by KRL and another public trasnport. And this area has pedestrian friendly aswel and many foodcourt everywhere and also local food.

Very interesting to see your living expenses. You lived a very frugal lifestyle for a foreigner in Jakarta. I think it would be interesting for you (or someone) to do a KZbin video on the costs / expenses for a foreigner's lifestyle in Jakarta - maybe your collaborator, Kristian, could do that type of video. I estimate it is likely to be USD3 - 4,000 a month. Jakarta is certainly cheaper than Singapore or Hong Kong but people need to realise that Jakarta is now a major international city and the living expenses reflect that.
@TheMagicofJava3 жыл бұрын
You clearly mean foreigners with bank jobs? Few foreigners actually have jobs any longer in Indonesia, but still try to provide for their Indonesian families out of their savings. When in Jakarta I certainly try to live off $1,000 a month and that's a family of 4. Comparisons with Singapore and Hong Kong are just ridiculous these are the two most expensive places in the world.

Wow its more than 1k for a month. I think the cost of living is depend to which level of life you want to have. With your detail cost I prefer to save the accommodation since when we are travelling and we spend our time the most at the street, 10hours in apartment vs 14 hours on the outside. For me, if I was you, maybe it possible to spend around 500. Again, it depend to you and your pocket.. enjoy your time in indonesia!!!

Carefull..!! Jakarta have lot of fancy restaurant and food cost in resto is more expensive then Malaysia or even Singapore... You need to add some travel medical Insurance cost in your budget.. some food are spicy and oily.. not suitable for Foreigner or farang.. On top of that if you are single, night life in Jakarta can a-bit costly as liquor is heavy tax

Hi Alex...I watch this video 3 times...you didn't mention about how much it cost for your visa & how long the visa for . Do you have to EXIT & RETURN to renew that visa. The reason I ask because I am U.S. Citizen 🇺🇸 as well even though originally I am Indonesian 🇮🇩 & planning to go back to my home country. Please let me know if you have any information about that. Thanks🙏

I didn't mention it because it wasn't part of my monthly costs this month. I came to Indonesia in Nov last year so my process is going to be different to what it is now where everyone needs to quarantine in jakarta upon landing. It really depends what kind of visa you are applying for. At the time i had a business visa which cost about $400 for 6 month stay and you didn't need to leave the country to renew. Now i have a KITAS so I can just exit the country and come back in as often as I want to
