I found two hammers 4 years ago in my new house and I think the former owner left it in the garage because it they were very rusty and I decided to restore the smallest one.(7 LB/3.1 kg) because I will need it for my future jobs. The weight at the second hammer is 10 LB(4.5 kg) and I think in the near future I will restore it.
I started to remove the rust with electrolysis because I wanted to make sure I didn't go to deep with the angle grinder.
Thank you for watching.

Awesome! Only two critiques... 1. Use ash or hickory next time, forna handle that will last. 2. Use a sanding block to keep those side sharp super smooth and level for a much more even shine and a less distorted reflection.... but that's just my OCD talking. 🤣

Nice job. However, that softwood handle will soon break. Next time, use oak or other hardwood. Also, for safety, the end of the handle should have a bulge to help retain grip.

That sledge has been refurbed to "work-O-art" status. Probably not too much heavy lifting in its future.

Was this video recommended to me by YT? No. Then why am I here? I've been using a rusty sledge hammer with small cracks in the shaft of the handle at home, so I wanted to watch some restoration videos for fun.

Nice job, you got that polished really well. Unfortunately that nice handle will let you down. It looks like Pine, good for house frames but to weak for tool handles as wooden handles are made of particular timbers because of their qualities. They are usually a hard wood which has a tight straight grain but has flexibility as well. One of the best is American Hickory. In Australia, spotted gum works very well and in England Ash is the preferred choice. I don’t know where you are but just google axe handles in your country to get some information. One other point, the shoulder you put in the handle at the base of the head is a no no. This creates a high stress point and is the most likely place where the handle will snap. There should be a gentle bulge in the handle at the base of the head tapering down into the hole in the head. Again look at google for sledge hammer handles and you will see what I mean. I hope this helps you in the future as you have some very good skills and I would like to see more of your work. Don’t take the criticisms in the comments to hard, except for the first one WTF, people are just trying to help. Good luck and cheers, Stuart 🇦🇺

Oh, brother! I've seen the ultimate in metliculousness, I do believe. I admire your skill and care to restore that tool and you should be proud of the result. Otherwise, the resulting finish put on the head urges me to suggest that the end product be engraved and used as a commemorative piece or retirement gift. PS: ... and me just looking for a vid on how to set a wedge

I'm gonna say as little as possible to get him engaged. Real points only, but he will probably ignore whatever I say and go off on a rant about something else. The goal is to see how much I can get him to write with as little effort as possible. If you are confused by this comment then just ignore it. Inside joke.

I had to stop watching at the fucking 2x4. I made it through the god awful polished finish in a sledge hammer, even the fact that you did a rust removal process BEFORE going to town with an angle grinder. But to use a standard pine 2x4 as a handle....thats just unforgivable. Thumbs down son.
