He’s singing in three different styles in the song. He’s singing as the demon, real guttural vocals. The super melodic cleans were directly from his mother’s journal. And he sings as a narrator and son. This in one of the most heartbreaking experiences I’ve heard as a song. The Valley itself is a tremendous album that Phil opened up his world for us to explore via the music.

A quote: "Their latest album, "The Valley" is a reference to the part of Hardin Valley (west of Knoxville, Tennessee) where vocalist Phil Bozeman grew up. Set against this backdrop, he approaches his subject matter unflinchingly, building upon everything that came before, making it clear that he has survived that which he was forced to endure and is not afraid to confront it. “Phil has been upfront in his lyrics in the past about hardships he endured in his life as a child, and I believe with this record we tried to paint a better picture of that,” says guitarist Alex Wade, who alongside his bandmates, stands 100% behind everything their vocalist has to say. “I feel our music is Phil’s release from his past, being able to get it out and speak about it, and hopefully anyone who hears it that may have gone through similar experiences can find some release in it as well.”
@lepi448713 жыл бұрын
The song is about the singers mother. She suffered from schizophrenia and claimed to be tormented by demons. This song is about one in particular. She wrote journals and some of the lyrics are direct quotes of some of her entries.
@kylekinney94553 жыл бұрын
I struggle with issues too...this video makes me cry sometimes, partly because I'm frightened of what I'll be like when I'm older..maybe happy and surrounded by friends, maybe alone and paranoid and afraid...but also partly because I dont like seeing my loved ones so worried or hurt by what I'm going through...I imagine it's like that for most...pain, and tremendous fear of the unknown
@robertgriffith31393 жыл бұрын
“Basically, Phil [Bozeman, vocalist]’s mom would see a demon outside or by her fireside, and she knew that if she saw it there, then it would be by her bedside that night,” says Ben. “She would write these journals which were pretty cryptic - her handwriting would change every now and again. The song title actually came from one of the journals. It talked about the Devil raping a witch. So we interpreted it, and changed it to give it a better flow. We didn’t want the word ‘raping’ in the song title, so we changed the title, and gave Mathis this vision, and he did his own thing with it.” Apparently, and i could be wrong, Phil's mother was a schizophrenic with 36 or so different personalities.

So glad you finally did another Whitechapel reaction. Idk if anyone before me done this but here's some context, the album this is off of is about the singer Phil's life and this song is about his mother. She suffered from mental disorders after losing his dad and believed that demons were visiting her in her bed (represented by the old man and the lyrics "the demon stands by the fireside, but tonight they'll migrate to my bedside") also he used certain scripts from her actual journal in the lyrics such as "burn the bed, burn everything, its all a lie anyway". The album as a whole is very gut wrenching, especially knowing the real history behind it
