Ok, so you were right about it being in drop D (the tuning), but the switch was half time and the guitars instead of playing power chords played the low string on its own, giving it a bassier sound as it wasn't stacked with higher notes.

@TrueVizualMusic2 жыл бұрын
So at 4:15, it sounds different because it's simpler. Let me explain... In metal, it's suuuuper common to have multiple guitar parts happening at once. Often you have lower foundational tracks that make up the bulk of the tone (riffs/power chords), higher parts that add harmonic content to the foundation (riffs/PCs up an octave sometimes with extensions), melodic/countermelodic parts (single note lines that take over the melody in place of vocals or compliment the vocals), and atmospheric/effects tacks (reverbed out arpeggios, bends, wails, whammy dives, etc). A well-mixed song like this will have all those parts balanced in a way that lets the main guitar part take up the majority of the sonic space the guitars can live in while allowing all the complimentary parts to sit tucked in in their own pockets to add to the overall density of guitar without moddying up the midrange/competing with other elements. This is one of the main things that gives modern metal its huge "wall of sound" feel. When that "change up" happens, we lose all but the main riff. It's the same lick from the first half of the breakdown but without all the upper harmonic content from the other guitar parts. With the other guitar parts missing, the main riff can get turned up in the mix, which makes it hit harder. Combine that with a slightly simplified drum part and more aggressive vocals and you have a B section to the breakdown that feels like it digs in even harder than the A section and sets up the next "verse" perfectly. Kris Crummett is credited with engineering this album, in case anyone was wondering. Source: I'm an audio engineer & producer who primarily works in metal. Cheers! :)

It's called speech level singing...which implies that rather than simply tightening his chords, he is actually reducing the amount of vocal cord that vibrates as he ascends. The higher he ascends, the more his cords must adduct, and his resonance changes from his chest cavity to his head (what is referred to as chest voice) (called head voice.) The head voice is essentially the female voice that guys use when they cannot sing any higher (among inexperienced singers), a la Marge Simpson. Kellin has only eased the transition between those two locations, creating the illusion of a single voice (often called the mixed voice). That is why, as he ascends, he begins to sound more like a small child/girl but retains the speaking voice of a man. 😁 I love Kellin! You should hear his beatboxing of you haven't already. There's no point in me leaving the links here bc the youtube bots will surely make them disappear. But if you're interested, just search and they're all over youtube.
