Regarding your comment about the pacing of the movie being slow; if you compare it to other movies of the time this would actually be at the faster end of the spectrum. Movies back then were not as fast paced in general. The trend since that time has been for a lot of movies to be very fast paced. So that's another thing you have to think about and remember while watching movies from different past decades. I was 5 when this movie came out, grew up watching Star Wars. Now my kids are into Star Wars and we enjoy watching the movies together. I'm glad you like them so far. I have a reaction suggestion; you need to watch The Princess Bride! Dang. Do you recall what ticket prices were then?? Or was it not actually paid for 21 times?
@SeanBoyce-gp Жыл бұрын
According to my dad and uncles, it wasn’t hard to walk into the theater with one ticket and just stay the whole day, as long as you kept moving. But it’s weird, tickets were basically the same with inflation, but wage stagnation means they were cheaper. think my dad said it was about $3 with a coke or a popcorn? But he was making 2.35 an hour at Isaly’s in college, so he could afford roughly a showing per hour on a shift of work. Now, at Fed minimum, an 8 hour shift with no taxes withheld could only make you enough to see the movie once for every two to three hours worked, depending where you live. So by that measurement, it’s more than twice as expensive these days. For a middle perspective, I made $5.35/hr working at blockbuster in high school in the late 90s early 00s. Movie tickets then we're about $10. So from 77 to 2002, inflation had caused movie prices to almost quadruple, at least triple. But minimum wage had only doubled. From 77 to now, Movies are almost 10x as expensive, but the minimum wage only increased by about 3x. When people say "rich getting richer, poor getting poorer," this is what they mean.

For the time, cinematically, this was an extremely fast paced movie. One of the reasons people saw it in the theater so many times was that they felt like it couldn't all be taken in in one viewing. This set the stage for the action movies that would be increasingly faster paced as the decades progressed. (That said the story itself follows the basic plot of the classic "Hero's Journey" present in myths and legends for thousands of years. The creator of Star Wars was big fan of writer Joseph Cambell's book outlining these plot elements. (A many other elements came from Japanese samurai movie director Akira Kurosawa's "The Hidden Fortress".
@SeanBoyce-gp Жыл бұрын
He wasn’t just a fan, he was something of a student. Campbells work informed his entire understanding of mythic structure, and the 1987 Lucas-produced TV special about his life’s work is arguably why the Hero’s Journey is so universal in film these days. Modern mythology, like the MCU, owes everything to Star Wars and to Campbell

I was 13 and my sister was 9. That's what we did for fun during the Summer of '77-our parents dropped us off at the theater to see Star Wars. My sister had the soundtrack on 2 cassettes and we lived in an apartment complex with lots of paved areas, so she was outside nightly with her cassette deck and her roller skates, dancing to the different themes. She always got to be Leah when the boys played Star Wars because of being the only girl that wanted to play seriously, and I was jealous because I was just a little bit too old! I wanted a toy light saber too even though they weren't that great when they first came out. And don't set me started on her action figures!

ADF can be quite verbose, so it was a challenge. I had always been into Sci Fi as far back as I could remember. My sister and I watched Star Trek after school and I had seen 2001 in a revival cinema. I had tried to see Logan's Run because it looked awesome, but my dad saw the trailer and vetoed it because of the sexual content. Mom bought the book for me and had me hide it from dad! lol By the time Star Wars came out, my friends were the same boys that I had played Lost in Space with on the playground. @colonelb Жыл бұрын
Great reaction to such an amazing part of our culture. It's hard to really explain just how big Star Wars was when it first came out. It changed people's expectations about merchandising. Lucas famously negotiated a lower salary with 20th century fox in exchange for the merchandising rights, and really started the modern "merch" idea of movies. Prior to Star Wars, there was merch for other movies of course, but not on the same scale. There were Star Wars toothbrushes and bedsheets and shoelaces and coloring books and playing cards and every other thing you could think of. Star Wars is why movie merchandising has become a huge part of a franchise's success. Star Wars also changed people's relationship with sci-fi. Prior to Star Wars, sci-fi and fantasy weren't really taken seriously as a genre. There was Star Trek in the 60s but that lasted only 3 seasons and by the 70s had been relegated to a small fanbase. After Star Wars, many other studios rushed to find other sci-fi projects, and that's when Star Trek had a revival with their movies, and when other movies like Alien took off. The writer of Alien, Dan O'Bannon, famously had tried to get his script bought by studios for years and was told no over and over b/c "sci fi doesn't make any money", but after Star Wars, guess whose phone rang? Alien came out in 1979, just 2 years after Star Wars. Star Wars also changed Hollywood's relationship with movie making. Lucas started Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) as an effects company to make Star Wars and pioneered many techniques for early use of computers and motion control and they made custom computers and custom cameras and software to make the shots happen. ILM has gone on to make the effects for everything from Terminator and Back to the Future to Jurassic Park, the Green Mile, Saving Private Ryan, and countless others. It's no understatement to say that without Star Wars, so much of our modern culture wouldn't exist. Cheers

Not to mention that Star wars pioneered the 'lived-in' universe look - worn clothes, the appearance of age on the ships etc. Before that, sci-fi stuff was clean and shiny. Star Wars made 'long ago in a galaxy far, far away' feel more believable.

I don't want to get paid, if I can't make the movie I want! Just give me the merchandise that won't give me any money and the sequels that will never happen! Are you happy now?'' As much as I love star wars, it annoys me that George started with episode 4. As great as the original trilogy is, new viewers have to start with 4. It ruins the reveal of McDairmid's character in episode 3. BUT, starting in chronological order ruins the Vader reveal in the original trilogy! There's not really an ideal way to watch it, but I agree, it's probably best to start with 4 for this franchise.

If you want to hear some really great behind the scenes stuff, watch the documentary Empire of Dreams. It is a must watch for any diehard Star Wars fan. As someone who is a lifelong Star Wars fan born in 2000, its heartwarming to see all the comments of people who experienced ANH back in '77 and the phenomenon it was and still is. Another testament to how addictive the series is comes from my own story of how I became a fan. i remember the first time I ever saw Star Wars was when I was 4 or 5 on vacation. I walked in on my mom in her room getting ready for bed and watching Return of the Jedi and it happened to be the iconic "I am your father" scene. I remember immediately being transfixed on Vader and my mom telling me the story of how she first saw it in theaters. 20 years later here I am, feeling like I'm 5 again, sitting with my mom and marveling at how cool everything is.

I watched this movie in 77 while laying on the rear deck of my mom's Maverick (car, not truck). Even at age 5 this movie was so impactful that it ingrained itself upon my memory. Mind you, what you are seeing is a movie that has been updated a few times. Any scene where droids are whizzing around in the background or where monsters look really good is likely a modern addition. Also, while storm troopers aren't the brightest bulbs in the galaxy, bear in mind that from the moment the team landed on the Death Star, the imperial plan is to follow them to the rebel base. You can't follow dead people, so every blaster shot on the Death Star was MEANT to miss the team.

I was almost 10 when it came out, and I saw it with my mom, brother and uncle about three weeks in. Aside from everyone being riveted to the screen from 5 minutes in, the most memorable thing was at the end. The battle of Yavin attack on the Death Star was so intense, and the awesome John Williams score driving the mood toward the ultimate resolution, that when the Death Star blew up, there was that incredible second of watching the steel terror disintegrate into a million sparkles, and the music go from dreadful brass to the quiet twinkle of strings and flutes, when everyone finally realized they won. Another second, and the whole theater erupted in applause and cheers - the only time until Avengers: Endgame and the portal sequence anything like that happened. The applause continued after the medal scene. No one wanted to go home, just soaking it in, and looking around at everyone else smiling and nodding at each other. There was no doubt everyone was going back to see it again. After a decade of depressing stories in movies and reality (Cold War, Watergate, Vietnam, Oil Embargo, Middle East wars, assassinations, etc.), everyone was super ready for the good guys winning for a change.

Actually, that was the way movies were paced at that time. Modern movies have really been sped up in regards to pacing, some would say to compensate for lower attention spans of audiences, but that's the trend with this type of movie now. I saw this movie on day 1 in 1977. It was amazing! But the theatre way mostly empty.... we went a second time a week later and it was packed to the gills!

I like that Alex REALLY doesn’t know anything about the mythos. Luke and Leia, Ben and Vader’s relationship. I can’t wait for the Empire watch.

Very glad you've decided to watch these in release order. There are several other ideas out there to watch in straight episode order or some other weird variations. Insanity! Grear reaction. Enjoy the rest!
@jacobmonks3722 Жыл бұрын
I've seen a few people say you should watch it like: 4 -> 5 -> prequels -> 6. Like, I sorta get it, but also not really. The original trilogy just has such a different sensibility regarding storytelling and worldbuilding than the prequels do. I would think watching them like that can give you serious mental whiplash.
@Taylorswiftfan13308 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. I think they are likely seeing it too strongly through their own fully Star Wars experienced filter and not doing a great job of fully resetting to the vantage point of a first time viewer

Honestly, watching it in episode order makes perfect sense if you want to see the whole saga as one big epic story.

The SPFX were literally invented for this movie. The dynamic movements of the ships and the seamless backgrounds giving enhanced motion, too k everyone by suprise. Imagine seeing this in 1977, in 70 MM when that first dive run into trench occurs. You could feel it.

I saw this when i was a kid in 1977. It was life changing for every kid then. It was absolutely groundbreaking.

I made an epiphany a while back that the droids were not allowed in the cantina BECAUSE THEY RECORD EVERYTHING and it is a shady place with shady crap going down.

Imagine being 10 years old and witnessing the opening scene of the Imperial ship and the bass hovering over you as it moves over head on the screen, Goosebumps.

The first three movies (4, 5 and 6) were made using real models for all ships in order to make it look real, most of the laser beams and light swords were painted by hand on the actual movie. I am so jealous that you have 5 and 6 left to see, 5 is by far the best movie in the series.
@gabrielleroux2333 Жыл бұрын
I hate when people say this. 5 may be by far the most favourite amongst fans, but trying to put a “best” label as if it was something purely objective, is just downright condescending, dismissive and narcissistic AF 😑
@waterdragon2224 Жыл бұрын
Agree. 4,5 and 6 are the only ones you Have to see. They are the best, hands down. ❤

Yea astromech droids such as r2 basically can run diagnostics on a ship, repair it, and even on big ships the can eject from their ports and stick to the ship itself as it’s flying

I first saw this in theaters back in 1977 when I was 7 years old. Star Wars won my heart that day, and I'll love all the movies, shows, comics, and everything from back then until the day I die. I love watching people watch this movie for the first time and catch some of the magic. In recent years I have also come to the opinion that Leia is the GOAT in the original trilogy. She's a rebel leader, holds up to torture by Darth Vader without breaking, takes command of her own rescue, comforts Luke after the mentor he knew for all of three days dies AFTER her HOME PLANET is BLOWN UP and everyone she knew and loved IS DEAD, then coordinates an attack on a planet killing space station all without breaking a sweat. I mean, she expected to be rescued by a badass Jedi knight or a team of Rebel commandos. Instead she's saved by what amounts to a space trucker (who smuggles space meth) with his dog, a farm boy who wants to be a space wizard, and two used droids. And she handles the situation like a boss. Love her!

This came out when I was 13. Yeah. It left a mark. 😎 I saw it in theaters 12 times that summer, and I think I've seen it 60+ times since then. Best theater experience ever.

Gotta love Leia consoling Luke who lost Obi-Wan, a guy he's known for like 48 hours maybe. Nobody even saying they're sorry for Leia losing her entire planet and everyone she's considered family for her whole life.

Glad you enjoyed it! It's not quite what we got on VHS in the 80s since they had to add and modify stuff in late 90's, but still it was amazing and life changing back then. For my poor mother too, we rented this film SO MANY TIMES she probably knows half the lines without wanting to. And it's also great you're doing them in the correct order. Have fun!
@matthewandrews3883 Жыл бұрын
The correct order is 1-6, as per George Lucas himself.

The correct order is chronological. You watch 4 & fall in love with Star Wars because that's before you might lose a little love for 5 & 6. But then probably you'll lose a lot of love for 1-3 from hating Hayden as Anakin, or the kid playing young Anakin, or Jar Jar or whatever else in those that almost everyone finds to hate. And then there's 7-9... yeah those get no hate at all...

Fun fact: The Chewbacca costume that the late, great Peter Mayhew wore was not supposed to get wet in the garbage compactor scene. But it did, and considering the fact that the original suit was made of yak hair, It produced a pretty funky odor.

Great reaction. You’re exceptionally observant and very intelligent- you put things together very quickly. I grew up in the 70s and 80s, and right after this movie came out, at our very alternative middle school we had a guy come teach Tai Chi. Feeling energy moving into my hands, my 12-year old brain thought “This is the Force. I can be a Jedi.” Even today I still practice martial arts, and through them I met my wife… Best wishes to you on your own journey.

I saw this in the theater in '77 (Side note, the tickets were only 25 cents). This movie had a huge impact on my preferences for the books I read and movies I have watched ever since I saw it.
