Gio has been hurt during the past 2 seasons while on Dortmund. He played an average of 30 minutes per game during the past 2 years and scored only 4 goals. The kid has a world of potential, but I do not think he would have been the savior of the U.S. National Mens During the last World Cup. Good or bad, Berhalter was the coach and gets to chose who he wants to play. Regardless of what happens to Berhalter, the Reynas should not be allowed within a thousand miles of the National team.

No one is really talking about where this started. It started when Claudio cut GGGs son from Austin FC. No coach tells a player before the biggest event in their life "you aren't going to play much" unless they have an agenda. Gio threw a fit because he knew exactly why he was being sidelined. If Berhalter was back, I would not have been too hot or cold about it, the same being if he had been let go going into this contract cycle. The bigger problem I see (beyond what was said here, to which I agree with in total) is the Reynas have effectively also poisoned the coaching pool of interest in coming here. They say sometimes in coaching, "if you fire them, who is out there that is better and available?" And for me, the lists I had seen floating around were a bit lofty and ambitious in some regards, but I doubt anyone internationally of the clout that Americans could get excited about coming in has been dashed for 15 years or more. Why would you risk involving yourself with US Soccer for a 4-8 year span of your coaching career when the main office seems tainted and messy.

I assume USMNT execs and general managers would not normally accept calls from parents of a US team member. This is the problem. Two things this doesn’t consider. 1) GGG told Gio ahead that he’ll have “little to no role” at the WC. That’s bad coaching and seems personal. Did Argentina know Enzo would play a big role in the WC ahead of time? 2) GGG publicly (any speech is ‘public’) harmed Gio’s reputation which can potentially harms his future, with transfers, locker room perception, etc. IMO, that’s bad leadership by GGG, regardless of anything else that happened. That’s not world-class coaching.

The problem starts at the youth level. As long as the US continue to treat youth soccer as a business instead of development this will continue to happen because you will have parents who feel entitled to their kids playing based on the money they have paid or “donated”. Pay to play is the problem.

I think that the comparison in conduct of behavior (private at the time) by a 20 year old Gio Reyna is very much equivalent to conduct of behavior (private at the time) by a then 18 year old GGG. Reasoning (Reyna's Mom) behind the relevancy and why it has come to light is due to the hypocritical manner in which Berhalter treated Gio when he himself had made a poor choice as a young adult. I wouldn't use something a person did 30+ years ago against them myself, but can clearly see where she is coming from. At the end of the day no one involved wins in these actions. If the thought behind this was to destroy a longtime friendship and merely smear GGG's name and embarrass yourself and your young adult in the early stages of his professional career......then bravo, you have done an excellent job. I feel for the kid, because as reported, because he owned up to his actions and all the adults around him have failed to behave in a mature manner.

So on top of having a roster that lacks world class strikers and a coach that gets out coached at times, now we have former players that are heralded as USMNT royalty are allowed to put themselves and their family over the national team itself. We have a 19-20 year old spoiled brat that has his actions and attitudes accepted by his parents and then the spoiled brat adults in that family feel that they are all worth more then the team at large. Mind you this “better then everyone else” family decides to not only applaud their sons actions but in the midst of it all they publicly come out and try and destroy life long friends of theirs. This is the most ridiculous, immature and distracting thing I’ve ever seen. If my best friend is the head coach of the USMNT and my son plays for him, I’d expect my son to not only be a great teammate but also be as respectful to his uncle as possible and be an asset. I do not agree with what the family did but one has to understand how much they care for their sons and daughters and their love is very huge. Alexi, you got it wrong. It is Berhalters revelations on Gio post world cup that triggers Danielle Reyna's contact and throwing Berhalter under the bus. Berhalter screws himself. The Reyna's look bad, but hopefully that does not impede Gio's career. As far as Berhalter coaching career, GB acted like a child and deserves to face whatever consequences come his way.

Ridiculous. The Reynas look awful, deservedly. Reyna was best man at Greg and Rosalind's wedding, 25 years ago. Ostensibly, if Claudio and Danielle Reyna thought that it was an issue related to Greg's coaching it would have been brought up well before. They are scumbags and if you think it was anything like okay then you are one too.

@@IllyserilMoonfrost , scumbags? Whether Reyna's are or not, Berhalter screwed himself. Berhalter is a 3rd rate coach that did match us talent, but the way he handled GIO situation (and many others too, Brooks and the lying, and the contradictory tactics, on and on) is 'scumbag' moves. GIO is one player, but Berhalter impacts all others. Berhalter is a scumbag that must go!

Frankly this is not news. Reyna family should be FINED for trying to influence US men’s soccer for her son who DID NOT deliver. Danielle Reyna is not a player on the team. She is a parent. Not only did Gio Reyna not witness what Gregg Berhalter did, why would coach be punished when he wasn’t working for USMNT in 1991 & it was privately resolved between the parties involved?

Nothing wrong with mother goes after her kids, it’s human nature and beating up woman i don’t think so, only his wife knows what’s going behind the door, berhalter never coached single international game and have achieved nothing as coach became the head coach and exposed his lack of experience in World Cup, he just did no know how to play talented kids, it’s embarrassing and people want him back that’s insane.

USSF messed up when they got rid of Klinsmann. He improved the whole youth system. From the bottom up. This would of never happened under his leadership. He had it all, knowledge, vast playing experience/coaching and loved US soccer. These coaches we had after him are not world class. Too much,I know this guy that I played with. My family is tight with this guys family .Its like inbreeding problems. Way too much. You don’t hear this in other countrys federations. Let’s get it together guys WC 26 is coming on our soil. The most important person to consider in this matter is not Gregg Berthalter; it is not Geo Reyna or his parents; it is Rosalind Berhalter, who suffered 32 years ago, and who is suffering now. 32 years ago, Rosalind and Gregg decided they cared enough about each other that they wanted to get past what Gregg did to Roseland. Now, 32 years later, there is ZERO chance of Gregg's continuing NOT JUST just as national men's team coach, but in professional soccer. Let's be realistic: MLS will not touch him, he will not be hired in Europe, his career is over. Period. For Geo Reyna, this may mean that his own career moves forward, despite and because of the Reynas' disclosure of a private matter from which the Berhalters tried to move on long ago. Meanwhile, Rosalind gets to relive the past, and to face the future knowing that her husband's career is finished, that their lives are in tatters, that their friendship with the Reynas has been violated, and that their family's future is, to put it mildly, uncertain. If that is justice, if that is right, then we have seriously lost track of what justice really is.

It's about the money more so than the skill level. The ratio of money to skill in US soccer is a bit ridiculous. A professional player does not get selected for the starting eleven of the National team at the World Cup. Subsequently the coach is effectively blackmailed by the players parents to change his mind, over an incident in the coach’s private life 30 years prior. Hardly the optics that the USMNT needs, after they made a lot of friends at the Tournament, and as the hosts of the next World Cup the expectation might be that the entire operation will be slick, well presented and professional, and with a National team capable of performing, and not like some high school bitchy soccer mom clique .
