Mr. Shue was supposed to poke fun on the “cool” head teacher/advisor, one of many musical tropes that had become a cliché. He does things that question morality to try to improve the Glee Club whatever it takes like any other musical advisor you see on TV or theater. They do address this at times, mostly by Sue.

Also: it‘s funny how everyone in the comment section seems to think the plot and characters (especially Rachel) became that much better in the last two seasons while I absolutely hated what they did to the show at that point. The first season was great (in the glee way, you know), the second season was great and Rachel developed into a muuuuch more likeable character (although she already improved during the first season), many things happened and changed and I loved it, and in season 3, well, things weren‘t as dramatic as in the first two seasons, but I had a feeling the show sort of found its rhythm and it was how the story would naturally go on. (I think the show could have ended there.) Season 4 was a bit of a downer, many storylines were abandoned and I really hated the whole Brody thing, but it was still interesting. In season 5 and 6 everything just kind of....sucked. Ok, there were a few really good episodes, but it just seemed like they were forcing the show to go on and on to have that „Everything changed so much“-feeling. I don‘t know if it was because of Cory‘s death, but everything just turned to shit. (Also, after the THOUSANDS of characters introduced in the first three seasons who weren‘t focused on enough to make them seem like actual three-dimensional characters and the recycled New Directions of seasons 4 and 5 who literally no one was ever interested in, why did they have to give us a bunch of new two-dimensional characters with brief romances and almost none existing personalities when they could have just focused on the character developement of the few characters people actually cared enough about to keep watching the show even after season 5 (which I really still loathe) ???) But about the plot: So many things happened at one time and it just seemed so forced. Some characters appeared in almost every episode, still all we knew about them was their stereotypical introduction and their tiny dramatic storylines once or twice a season. I think it would have done the show real good if they had half the characters and more time for the plot. Or, for some plot, because while this show is about following your dreams and ignoring bullying and being oneself....what did become of those people? Their teenage years were mostly shit, gossip and falling into song and after that....they vanished! How good are the lives of the people who aren‘t Will, Rachel, Kurt, Blaine, Artie, Tina and possibly Mercedes, although I can‘t actually say if she was really happy at the end? Because what we got in the end were forced happy endings for the main main characters and abandoned storylines of characters referred to as ‚the cheerleader who got pregnant‘, ‚the guy who knocked up his best friend‘s girlfriend‘, ‚the asian dancer‘, ‚the gay bully‘, ‚the girl with the fat mom‘ and so on. Looking back, Glee wasn‘t a good show at all, but I still love it and I could still retell the entire plot...at least the plot including the main characters. And if you‘re still reading this comment, you‘ve earned my respect no matter what you think about my opinion.

Here's the thing, Glee in it's early seasons was a comedy and that was great. Like it was so cringy even back then but I assumed they were going for cringe-laughter. But then in later seasons it took itself too seriously, it was hard to watch. As someone who watched till the end, I rewatched the first three seasons and greatly enjoyed them. I couldn't stomach the last three. They were just bad.

Hmm, Rachel was actually the only one who trained from before Glee to become actually a star. She was the most hardworking of all of them, didn't had any other interest besides singing and I bet she knew how to read partitions, learnt her lines and moves before every one else and was the first and the last in drama class. I mean, of course others should have had their share of the spotlights too but I'm pretty sure every one did at some point. Mercedes has her girl group, Quinn gets solos...Only Tina and Archie are seriously underrated. For me it's quite normal that a teacher would pick Rachel as the soloist because she'd be so easier to work with and then you just focus on the other guys' harmonies.

Oh she's not likable. That's what made Glee great in the first place : main character was not pretty, she was not really smart, and she was not even nice. For ONCE we saw a character that was far from perfect, but made it solely through her motivation and hardwork. I would've hated her in high school. "I'd like to take over Glee Club" "You wanna captain the Titanic too?" That moment and many others in the series still get me laughing. Glee is still one of my favourite series of all time. Even if you don't like it, you have to appreciate what impact it's had. It helped put many people on the market like Lea Michele, Darren Criss and Cory Monteith (Rest in Peace). Plus I think some of their covers are better then the original songs, not many of them, but some of them. I will admit it did go down hill a bit after season 3 but even those seasons had some highlights like the double wedding. I grew up with the series and it helped me to become the performer I aspire to be. Glee will always have a place in my heart even with some of its flaws.

I LOVED Glee. Watched it from beginning to end. But when they introduced the new characters, everything was utterly ruined. Our group, our cast of characters were broken apart. The new characters were two-dimensional and boring, and everything got messed up! Before the came along, there was a squad. A group of unlikely friends with inside jokes, collective memories, and a bond that can't just be replaced. We, the viewers, felt like a part of that (at least I did). Then, that was gone.

Glee worked for a long time because it started off as self aware satire of those "Underdog Ragtag Team of Hopeless Teen" movies and tv shows, which is why everyone was the worst person (like a teacher blackmailing a student with planted drugs), but then somewhere in the middle, it started to take itself SUPER DUPER seriously and the sarcasm was completely gone. I still enjoyed my rewatch of it, but at some point it got really really dumb. Still love it though.

First 2 seaosn were OK, because the music HELPED the storylines, it was clear they wrote the script first and then searched for songs who would fit. After season 2, they realized the Glee versions of the songs sold very well and made tons of money, so the producers had a list of popular songs they wanted to sell and the writers had to put them in the script, whether or not it worked for the story or characters. That's why we ended up with Mr. Shuester singing "Blured Lines" to teenage girls...

Yeeaah. Season 3 had its moments, but they were always the episodes that did not care about current hits. Season 4 also had its moments, but they were fewer and brought down by the show apparently feeling the need to address every difficult issue under the sun. Season 5 was a horrifying mess that started with exactly that song, the Beatles and Finn tribute episodes were okay. Season 6 was actually watchable, but too short to feel relevant.

Kinda disagree tbh. Like Glee season 1 had a very specific structured feel to it that made it seem like the writers knew what they wanted to do in terms of story and songs that fit. The reason the songs after season 1 changed drastically was cause the writers realized the songs they chose didn't appeal to the right audience - young adults. The "recap" at the beginning of season 2 even poked fun at that saying with Jacob the annoying Jewish guy (who we never see again?) interviewing Mr. Schu and asking why the songs sounded so dated like something parents listened to...which they were, cause the writers weren't writing for anyone but the middle aged group. But after that the song selection improved tremendously for well, yeah money but also cause the appeal.

The quarterback was the one decent episode of season 5, actually. Finn was still around for most of season 4. Season 4 had its... Moments. And then it had school schootings and trying to deal with sexual assault of kids and yeeeaaaaah, nope, nuh-uh. Season 6 was actually pretty good and watchable, all things considered. Not as good as 1 or 2 or 3 when it had its good moments, but decent and not as volatile in its inconsistency.

Seasons 1-3 were good because all the OG characters were in high school. Everything after that just got weird because the characters that literally grew up on the show, got three whole seasons for character development, went off to college, and even those original characters who had their senior year in season 4 had their growth significantly stunted because even though we had this wild variety of characters to root for, the show has always implicitly been about Rachel, and her journey to stardom. The writers had to follow Rachel while still keeping some other OG characters in and also adding more newbies to replace the seniors who graduated in season 3. That's so much transition, and even though the attempts to focus on other characters was made, their little situations and storylines were, by and large, inconsequential to their character growth and they were almost there just to be on screen, because even though the show had basically mostly become about Rachel's journey, the writers very well couldn't do that when the show was also supposed to be about everyone else too. I'm sure there's more to it, but that's something I noticed. I loved the first three seasons because I could see how most of the characters were able to grow and develop, but once Rachel got into NYADA it was basically a challenge to make the show all about her while also not making it all about her. But maybe I'm just thinking way too much lol. That said I'm definitely not defending some of the poor screenwriting choices that were made in the last three seasons, but having seen the whole series way more times than necessary I understand why those decisions were made.

I rewatched all six seasons of Glee this week and you know what. I stand by it. Glee is so fucking funny, heartwarming, fun, charming, cheesy.
