Looking for one of the best handling CUVs? That'd be Ford's long running Escape. Even though the Escape is one of the older crossovers in this segment it is still a strong contender with a low starting price and a variety of turbo engines.

Thank you for keeping you comparisons within the bounds of common sense. I've seen too many reviewers and sites say the phrase "Well it's no Porsche, but it'l get you where you're going..." while driving something like a Yaris or Sentra.

I'm surprised you didn't mention towing. We have a SE 2.0L and it does a great job with a trailer. Also managed to get 26 mpg with a 2000lb popup on the highway.

The manual actually recommends regular gas for 1.6T and 2.0T, but also mentioning the premium may provide more power for heavy-duty driving, such as towing.

Having our 2013 2.0t for 5 years. No issue at all. Replaced the tires with pirelli p zero Nero and got much better traction made it almost a focus like handling. Downside is it reduce the mpg to 22-25 range. We also replaced the battery recently. It's a nightmare if you want to do yourself. You have to either remove the ac intake or engine air intake box. Some "German over engineering" thing made the easiest job hard.

Based on how many complaints I've seen about damaging internal coolant leaks on the Eco Boost engines, the standard 2.5L normally aspirated engine may be the way to go for long term reliability.

One advantage of this vehicle over most of its class is that properly equipped it can tow 3,500 lbs. Some can only tow 1500, and even some midsize crossovers like the Murano can't tow very much. Comes in handy every now and then even if you don't tow regularly.

hate this ugly mess of a car with a passion but i've been watching several of your reviews per day trying to decide on a new vehicle. I have to say you're BEYOND the best of the best on youtube! Your grading system, although unusual gives an excellent perspective especially when watching reviews back to back. Keep doing what you're doing Alex!! I'll always watch your stuff, and the scenery in the area you live is absolutely beautiful! I follow reviewers for months and sometimes years before I subscribe due to a variation in quality and consistency but your work never disappoints!! ten out of ten!! all day everyday!! Bravo! :)

I had a 2015 Escape SE 1.6T and now have 2017 Escape SE 2.0T, I can say that it takes about a half a year or so of braking it in to get the fuel economy figures the Ford claims. I'm pretty happy overall with 2.0T.

Alex, Please test road noise by driving on Concrete highways. Ride on asphalt roads is always quite regardless of any brand vehicle. You will find noticeable difference in Cabin noise once you drive on Concrete Highways. Most of the states now using concrete instead of asphalt.

Alex, I understand your preference to compare more popular makes/models, but regardless of sales rank the Forester is readily available and gaining traction; it's less and less of a niche brand every year. More importantly, your review channel has enough subs/views to affect popularity, and as such I find it a shame that you're being reactive re sales figures as opposed to proactive in comparing vehicles that the audience might not have considered. Just my 2 cents, I still think your reviews are the best on youtube!

+Cooking and Fishing According to independent market research the Escape's top competitors are the RAV4, CR-V, Rogue and Cherokee, so this is counting the valid competition. I'm not discounting the Subaru in any way but again if you include that, then you have to include #5, #6 and #7 in the segment as well and this video would have been an hour long. The Forester has been in 8th or 9th place for some time and since Subaru has said they are capping production rather than expanding it is unlikely to change any time soon. In addition the Forester is unique in that it is less expensive than the base models of the competition despite having standard AWD this results in the Forester not being very competitive at higher end trims like the Titanium model of the Escape that we were testing.

I've been noticing a trend of most Ford Ecoboost products recently having inflated mileage claims. The benefit is they are more rapid than competitors, but the MPG is not as beneficial as Ford claims to be over the old V6 engines.

Alex...I so agree with you on the last generation Rav4...how I miss that 6. And because of it leaving, I ended up with my 13 Escape. But you are dead wrong about the Rogue. That non usable back seat and not much more cargo never make up for that poor driving. Drive and power simple mean so much more than a non-usable third seat in day to day life. I loved your review of the Sorento...but have a nit to pitch on the EPA MPG ratings. The Ford does better with the 4 turbo...22/30/25. I get much better with premium. Even the Ford AWD does as well as the FWD of the Sorento. Ford 21/28/23. vs 20/27/23. How in heck does the Ford, with better numbers, equal the Kia? I must be missing something here. But I will go out and test since you made me feel it is something to see. Here it is, as you summed it up, Alex. Power. Cargo, driving and price. Nothing else gives you all of these. And these make getting into and driving this car a lot of fun every day. Perky and fun...IMO. But your MPGs as usual, seem out of whack with my years in this car as well as other ecoboost engines. Personal issues...plastic connection center stack noise as well as the front lower window narrowing. I will add that once I changed from regular to premium in my Ford ecoboost engines, I added a minimum 2 to 3 MPG in overal driving. The MKS has gone up by two, the Escape 2.0 went from 24. 3 to 27. What is with all these ecoboost MPG reading you guys get? I drive relatively easy all my Fords...and my MPGs are well better than any of yours. I used to average 22 in the 3.5 MKS. Easily. And now I average even better with premium. This is awesome considering premium is only .20 per gallon more. And the power is just wonderful! Yes...this is with a reversed 60hwy/40 city style or environment. But even still...the earlier readings were from the same. I will also add value. The ES with the better 2.0 cost me 25K. Nothing I looked at gave me as much car and this top engine for that money. The 2.0 is one of my all time fav engines. The bad buyer remorse? Well...I wish I had gotten the vav/back up and better seats. I do not like the daily cloth seats and the after market mirror back-up/nav system is a bit small. I am not in agreement about the handling or MPG as stated above. In my opinion, there is no better driving car. I test drove the Mazda many times and am trying to get my sister to get one for her daughter...but only because of pricing. Both were fun, but the Mazda was almost even and much slower. The Escape, however, handles as well as any fun Mazda I have ever driven. Yes...a bit jumpy and firm, but this is directly a result of the ability to handle and drive as if it is a sports like car. It handles turns and roads as well as any car. I am one that suffers from the vibrations. The vibrations and noise come from the center stack area where plastic sections meet. On my bumpy mountain road, it is /was bothersome. ALL noise kills a car for me. But other family members and passengers think I am the nutty one. They seem not to hear or be bothered by these small, irritating crackles. But I hear and search down ALL noise. I added small foam inserts under the connecting areas and it ha stopped. But it is a reality. I understand even the newest Avalon suffers this very same annoyance. And, along with this cheap/noisy plastic connecting finish, I think THE most bothersome feature is the windshield. It narrows a bit to much towards the bottom, creating a nasty vision issue for me. I just cannot get used to this narrow bottom view along with the A pillar.
