By far the most comprehensive review of the Forester I've seen. CVT+turbo is awesome, it makes the engine pull like a diesel, but with the rev range of a gasoline engine. Great that you hammer in the point that Full Time AWD is ALWAYS better than slip and grab systems.

Purchased a Forester automatic non turbo month or so ago and I love it. The ride is awesome, feels like a gecko lizard hugging the road, decently comfortable, low noise and good pickup ( contrary to what I have read mostly). And I personally love the way it handles and looks. Only drawback is stereo system, but I can easily live with that. I highly recommend.

Bought the XT after test driving most vehicles in this segment. CX5 2.5L and Tuscon 1.6T made up the top 3 choices....all great cars. Only need to spend minimal dollars (front and rear sway bar upgrades) to get it handling a lot better. Also the the engine is de-tuned and it is easy to get much more power out of it. Definitely not as good looking as the Mazda and Hyundai. Great thorough review.

This was a really good review of this car. I have the 2014/ 2.5i base model with some extras, and I love this vehicle. I am a little over 20,000 miles and it has only been a little under 10 months, and this is the best car for all the driving that I do daily, and for traveling. I wish I would have seen this video before I bought my car, it would have made the choice all the more easier. I will also say that the AWD option on this car in snow when it gets to 7 to 10 inches with ice, is EXCELLENT! Kudos to you Alex this is the best review of the Forester that I have found.

Hi Alex, Thanks for another great video. I've owned a 2014 Forester XT Touring for almost a year now and it's been flawless, by far the best vehicle I've ever owned. The gas mileage is 28mpg over the 13000 miles I've driven it on standard 87 octane gas, which it says it can use and it does so just fine.

Any consideration for updating for a 2017 Forester XT review? It seems you have more up to date reviews of most other vehicles in the Subaru line up, but the Forester has been ignored for 2 years now and could potentially need a more up to date review to remain relevant for today's buyers. So many options in the segment: RAV4, CR-V, Rogue, CX-5, Escape. I test drove the RAV4 hybrid, CR-V and the Forester XT recently and I loved the power of the XT though the interior is definitely spartan. I liked the outward visibility and the low belt line of the windows. With that alone, I feel like alot of the safety features were unnecessary besides rear camera and blind spot monitoring. Something that may be interesting to other viewers. I recently also inquired with my insurance company wether adding Eyesight safety lowers my rates. It lowered my liability rate, but increased my collision rate more, so in total my insurance expense increases with added safety tech. Explained to me by my agent that safety tech is expensive to replace though they decrease your own risk of collision, most collisions occur due to the opposing driver.

David, for some reason I wasn't able to reply directly to your comment. Subaru says that there have been changes to address the issue but it is too early to say if the problem has been solved or not. 1 quart of oil consumption per 5,000 miles isn't terribly rare, but owners were reporting more than that. The drive toward efficiency and low friction piston rings and thinner coils could be to blame, but again it is hard to say. I assume we will know more this year about the outcome of the oil consumption law suits and any design tweaks.

Alex on Autos I have the 2.5 Impreza 2011 with 94k miles as the daily conmuter car, changing oil every 8k (Penzoil syntetic)and no oil added between changes. Due to the good reliability I added a Forester 2013 as a family car and my daughter have a 2013 XV to go college.. Risky to have 3 cars of the same brand but no problems so far. I will need another car for other high school-er going to college too, So I"m in research for another good deal

Jose F Zayas I live in a tropical weather, 75 to 95 F. I use 10W30 oil without adding oil between service 8k miles. Maybe people that use 0/5w oil for cold weather in the snow belt are having different results. I seen problems like that with vehicles coming from cold weather.

Alex, I really enjoy your reviews. They are very informative, thorough and accurate. However I would like to point out one error in this review: in case of this and most Subaru 5 and 6-speed manual transmissions the AWD system has an actual center differential with a 50/50% torque split and a viscous limited slip device, not just a viscous coupling (except the STI versions that have an electronic limited slip differential with more rear torque bias). The manual transmission option offers a true full-time AWD system that will transmit torque to both axles equally all the time while still being able to differentiate during turns and not overheat during extended hard driving on slippery surfaces. This is key for performance handling and is what truly sets the manual option apart from the run-of-the-mill torque transfer clutch based AWD systems as found in the Subaru CVT option and from most other competitors.

Love your reviews. Always very informative. I've been eyeing the forester for sometime but am also considering the rav4. I've noticed that this video is a bit outdated and seems to be using an older ranking system. For instance, the seats were rated a 7/10 in this video and that the felt better than the rav4. But in a newer, 2016 rav4 video, the rav4 received a 9/10 in seats. I didn't see a difference in seat designs though. So i was wondering if the forester would ever be reviewed again in the near future for better cross shoping/comparing? Thanks!

By far the best review I've seen so far. I bought the 2015 XT with Eyesight a few months ago and am quite happy with it. I agree with Alex that the seats could be a little more comfortable but I can live with it. A little more bolstering would be nice and the engine noise in the cabin is not that bad, but then I did get the undercoating which tends to muffle the sound a bit. The rear camera display is projected on the small info. screen on the dash but Forester windows are so big that rear and side visibility is excellent.

Great video Alex! I can attest to the head and leg room, it's very generous. The driver's seat bottom felt short and I couldn't get comfy. On the highway, the steering felt really touchy and I had a hard time keeping it centered in the lane. And lastly, it was extremely noisy inside the vehicle. Otherwise, I like it, lol!
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 жыл бұрын
The steering feel is largely down to the tires. If the forester had lower aspect ratio rubber it would feel more connected, but then you'd lose some of the soft-road ability.

Alex on Autos well the 2014/2015 forester just switched to an electronic instead of a mechanical system(no power steering fluid). the common denominator with these electronic systems is less "feel". the XT model runs on 225/55HR18 rubber so that's a pretty nice middle ground for handling and ride quality.

Great video, nice info given, just got a '15 for the wife, she does stupid miles and like the great view from the car, I wanted her to get a cx5 but after driving the forester about 10 minutes later I was really surprised, what a good allround car/truck this thing is. do not need to techno inftainment so it is not a problem, my biggest concern was the cvt..... not bad really for what she is going to use it for, and the awd drive is better than all the rest, great for our Canadian winters

I heard these cars are great cars. I'm actually interested in a legacy, Impreza and a forestor. Are they really reliable. I do a great job taking care of my vehicles changing fuel filter oil changes, oil filters and air filters. Also do my radiator flushes after a certain amount of mileage. front and rear differential oil changes, tire rotations and buy extra brand new tires. Is maintenance on par or is it alittle bit more expensive then regular cars?

Thanks for getting around to Forester. It intrigues me, together with hachiroku, but that review didn't add any new information to what I knew already, while this one does, in particular about drivetrain and I-sight cameras. My biggest problem with Forester at this point is its lack of low range. Having tasted it, I don't want to go back. In addition, it's getting too big. I suppose there's Jeep Renegade Trailhawk to look forward to, so that's going to be my next anticipated review, some time in 2015.
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 жыл бұрын
The Renegade Trailhawk does look like a tasty package. The approach angle looks to be a little bit of a problem but it's hard to correct that with a transverse platform. The 9-speed's first gear is much much steeper than the lowest ratio in the Forester and when you add to that the available 2-speed transfer case it makes for quite a novel package. The whole thing reminds me a bit of the Suzuki Jimny (not sold in the USA) which is sort of the final incarnation of the Suzuki Samurai. For some reason I don't anticipate a run-away sales success in the USA, but it should be some good, cheap fun.

Tricky. I prefer the Rogue to be honest. The Forester is excellent value and it is more capable off-road and a little more sure footed in the snow, but the Rogue's interior, better pricing and available 3rd row put it to the top of my list. The front seats are also tops in comfort.

Russ M I hate to say it, but I really disliked the Outlander and it was one of the few vehicles I drove but felt that I was unable to be objective with. For the 7-seat version, the Dodge Journey is a better vehicle in all honesty.

Alex on Autos I agree, Journey is definitely sensible option as a family hauler, with more convenience. Though, its on 30K+ side if you want to get V6 and AWD and 10" longer. I would personally consider it as alternative to MDX (there are some states, where car property taxes paid on annual basis) so getting with expensive vehicles has financial implications. Also, I am looking to see Journer reveiw from you soon :)

I was almost about to walk in and get a Forrester 2015 Limited. Then i saw in media the lawsuit against Subaru for excessive oil consumption up to 2014 models. I emailed Subaru on it to get clarification if 2015 model was affected. They didn't give me a clear answer instead simply said: "The suit alleges that some owners of 2011-2014 Foresters, 2013 Legacy and 2013 Outback, (with 2.5-liter Boxer engines) and 2012-2013 Impreza and Crosstrek models are experiencing oil consumption levels above the owner’s expectations. Only a very small number of customers have identified a concern on this issue. Customers can have full confidence in their Subaru vehicle and our warranty process if required. All vehicles have manufacturing tolerances and different engines will consume oil at different rates. Driving patterns, vehicle usage and conditions such as climate can also affect oil consumption. Typically for these models, no oil is required between scheduled services (if the oil light is not on). In very rare circumstances, up to one quart could be added depending on severity of driving conditions " I am going to hold out now buying Forrester until i see some data and or hear Subaru explicitly say 2015 not affected
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 жыл бұрын
I'm honestly not sure how big of a problem this really is. The boxer engine design that Subaru uses can consume more oil than a traditional 4-cylinder engine and the engine holds more oil than a typical inline engine as well. Oil consumption is not a problem per se as long as there isn't a larger problem. Some engine designs, especially turbos, can consume up to 1qt of oil in 5,000 miles and that usage would be considered "normal". That being said, I believe that the engine in question is not the same engine used in the 2015 Forester.
@benjaminlately
@benjaminlately 10 жыл бұрын
Some of that has to do with how the car was broken in and bad luck. I do not notice any significant oil loss in my 2014 forester XT. My 2005 WRX was a different story. As long as you check the oil from time to time you probably won't have any trouble.
@ryancrow2876

if that fact that a very small number of people have noticed slight oil consumption is keeping you from buying a car then id hate to see you check out some of the other manufacturers with their constant recalls and engine fires and such.

Good review again Alex. Interested in more detail on the HTCVT and the driving modes. Does the Sport Sharp mode make the vehicle feel more sporty?
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 жыл бұрын
Not really. Infact it's actually slower to 60 if the car is in any mode where a stepped transmission is imitated. If you really like feeling shifts, then those modes are for you. If you just want to be fast or efficient, leave it in Drive.

Alex on Autos Thanks Alex. One more question. I rented a Subaru XV Crosstrek while on vacation in Colorado last week. Thought the CVT was awful as off the line the Crosstrek was almost dangerously slow. Since you have driven both is the HTCVT on the Forester much more responsive?
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 жыл бұрын
Kent Freeman They are about the same. Off the line acceleration is slightly slower than some of the competition with as 0-30 time that is around 2.75 seconds. That's not really *that* much slower than something like a Rogue, Exploere, etc but the way the CVT behaves it may "feel" slower than it really is. Subaru's CVT doesn't have as low of a starting ratio as you will find in the average 6-speed FWD vehicle or Nissan's newer CVTs, that's the reason for the slower 0-30 time.

Alex, First off, your reviews are by far THE BEST on KZbin!!!! Second, any plans to review the new Subaru Impreza??? Preferably the hatchback, fully loaded :) I'm in the market for a high mpg >$30k wagon/hatch, and Subaru is really selling me on its 4wd and EyeSight systems. I've heard that the Imprezas are a bit under-powered with the CVT, and WRX/ STI models are not available in a hatch at this time. A manual may do the trick, but that will negate some tech options. Any thoughts/ insight?

So the forester is not very quiet on the highway. What would be a quiet compact SUV? Nissan Rogue?

Hi Alex, Thanks for the detailed review on Subaru forester. Compared to the Turbo version, does non-Turbo version has enough power for daily driving? for example joining the highway, passing the vehicles or driving uphill etc? Thanks

I think so, but I know others with a heavy right foot that find it too slow. The big thing to know about the Subarus (all CVT models right now) is that the transmission doesn't have a very low starting gear (think of it like first) so initial acceleration in any model, the V6 and turbo included, is a little lacklustre, but after about 30 MPH the benefit of the CVT is apparent and 0-60 times are equal to or ahead of the competition.

Bochok Galante That depends on what you're after. The interior, infotainment and handling abilities of the Mazda are superior, but the Fotrester is the more capable vehicle in the snow or in mind off-road situations.
