Manfred Fitzgerald formally of Lamborghini heads the team, Luc Donckerwolke (BMW, Bentley, Audi), Peter Schreyer (Audi), Albert Biermann (BMW M), Shag-yup Lee (Bentley), Alexander Selipanov (Bugatti) and Fayez Rahman (BMW). Genesis may be a S. Korean company but the development of the line is not. Expect nothing more than top notch luxury and engineering.

You have to look at the Singer. It is a car with more room for both passengers and luggage and is a truer sports sedan than the the G70. You must analyze what it is you want. Differences are not that great but the comfort and money are significant. Back space for passengers is severely reduced in the G70. Trust me!!!! It squishy back there
@Ghostblaze15 жыл бұрын
W Morris You don’t buy a luxury compact sports sedan for the space. Space is just an added bonus and for most cars in that segment nowadays it’s more than enough. If you want luxury with space you bump yourself up to the G80, 5 series, E class, Lexus GS etc etc. The Stinger is not a “truer” sports sedan than the G70. The Stinger is 136 LBs heavier than the awd g70 and has a longer wheelbase. G70 has a more rigid chassis. The Stinger is a GT cruiser. If you want a sports sedan you get the G70. If you want the lift back cruiser you get the Stinger.
@johnholst5 жыл бұрын
@@saxman145 Yes, you must analyze what you want. Of course. But the Stinger and G70 are not in the same category. One is a fastback GT car and the other is a compact luxury sport sedan. Hey Alex, I drove the 3.3 TT (slight turbo lag) for an entire weekend in Vancouver, Canada in Oct/'18 and totally luved it except for: (a) the rear seats are small (b) The resale value & reliability concerns are HUGE (c) I found a huge vibration when cornering - could be the brake vectoring. BUT - The price point, the maintenance included, the valet service that I received was top notch, that engine was put thru its paces and handled it very well, huge amounts of torque (I enjoy to drive spiritedly when safe to do so- Very very happy with that engine & transmission), many Drive Modes, great sound system and all the safety features. I used that right pedal and my mileage took a big hit. I also drove on eco mode on a highway trip for 100 kms and got 12.6/100 kms. The comparable cars will set you back $15K for similar features and options. Its $57,500 Cdn plus taxes for the 3.3TT version. No extra fees, at all. I like the looks. My tester had the Blue ext with Red Brembos, dark wheels along with the black & red int. That quilted interior is gorgeous. Lets talk about the VALET service - If you want a test drive they bring the car to you. If you buy it they deliver your new vehicle on a flat bed truck to reduce any additional mileage, when you need servicing (all included for 5 years) they come to you to pick up and after service they deliver it to you. No additional charges. 5 yrs maintenance costs included. Here in Vancouver they are working on a track days program for customers and they do have rally days currently. Really it has every feature that you want AND the drive, sportiness, turning radius, that GORGEOUS interior & that ENGINE...WOW!!! Cheers from Vancouver, Canada.

Of all the reviews I've seen on the G70, a feature no reviewer has commented on is that the speedometer is non-linear. Most speedos that indicate up to 180MPH have evenly spaced markings requiring that at most daily speeds, the needle only swings 20% - 35% of the range. This one has the major ticks at 10MPH up to 60MPH, then the increment is 20MPH. It allows for good resolution at normal every day speeds but still will give the marketing department the never-to-be-seen-unless-dropped-from-an-airplane 180MPH.
@Genkoup5 жыл бұрын
I've reached 174 on a stockish 2015 Genesis Coupe with the speed limiter removed. I'm pretty sure this car can reach 180. If not, a conservative tune will make it reach that speed.

@@Tampa0123456789 No that's MPH. I'm in Canada and I've reached 282 km/h on the speedometer with stock wheels/tire size, so that's roughly 174-175 MPH. Before you ask, yes it was a flat road. Those cars are a little bit underrated. The gearing helps a lot to reach that speed to, as you're almost on the rev limiter in 6th gear at that speed.

The Hyundai/Kia partnership continues to knock it out of the park. They're doing an amazing job of offering vehicles that share components while appealing to somewhat different sub-segments of a particular market category. The 2019 Santa Fe and the Kia Sorento is one example. The G70 and Stinger is another. I suspect that the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride will follow a similar pattern. Unfortunately, while the shared aspects of their vehicles is a strength, it's also a weakness in a few areas. The most obvious is in engine design where they continue to trail the competition in fuel efficiency. Not a deal breaker but a compact sedan that struggles to average 20 mpg reminds me of the atrocious mileage I experienced in my Mazda RX-8. It was a constant irritation. Overall of course, Hyundai's biggest blunder with the G70 has nothing to do with the quality and features of the vehicle. It's the almost unbelievable failure to get their ducks in a row with a Genesis dealership network in the US by the time their most popular vehicle was set to be introduced. Hopefully it won't prove to be a long term injury. The G70 deserves far better than to be a great car that most consumers can't buy.
@gerijokub77375 жыл бұрын
You're comparing and complaining about the fuel consumption in a ROTARY-powered RX8. Yup, sounds like a fair comparison...
@stephenhendricks1035 жыл бұрын
@@gerijokub7737 No, I'm not comparing the fuel consumption of a rotary engine to a conventional internal combustion engine. I'm only noting that each represents a small, relatively light sporty vehicle with lackluster fuel efficiency. With a fuel tank of less than 16 gallons the range of a G70 is only about 300 miles including the reserve. Even my RX-8 had a greater range than that, primarily because it had a larger fuel tank. As it happens I'm a fan of the Korean brands. But there's no question that the weak spot in the engineering of most of their vehicles is fuel efficiency.

Awesome vehicle! Great styling, loaded with features, great performance, great handling, and most importantly a great value. Like with the KIA Stinger, if you don't care for a fancy badge to impress people, this is the car to get in this segment. I see the G70 as being presented as a very good alternative to the BMW 3-series (especially if one values included content versus the nickel-and-dime options approach used by BMW). I certainly hope that is (in reality) the case. I am concerned at the suggestion that first gear in the G70 might be vulnerable to engine toque. That would be enough to suppress aftermartket ECU flashes, or at least tweak them a bit to compensate for that weakness. Does that apply only to the twin turbo V6? But maybe that's the secret to Lexus' IS reliability; no stress on the driveline? So that leaves me to contemplate the Four-banger. Less weight over the nose may make it the best "dance partner" as a momentum car on back roads, and a mild ECU flash to add a little "pep to it's step" might be quite satisfying in that dancing context. No AWD, thank you, and I'd "stick" with the automatic tranny so the wife could spell me on long cruises. But due diligence is required (while I wait for local dealers to get G70s on the showroom floor; so far three dealers, and not one among them as of today). So I'll troll the G70 owners forums to see what they like and dislike, and how I feel about it. Admittedly I'd prefer the driving dynamic of the Alfa Romeo Giulia, but I have a natural aversion to masochism.

longbowdt well said. I too am looking for a car that makes a road trip about the getting there, hence my interest in the G70. I chickened out on a Giulia in ‘17 because of reliability, but I get a sense from the forums that a variety of software fixes have improved this.

@@craigyirush3492 Craig, I'd love to see just how much I'd leave on the table (driving dynamics-wise) in selecting the G70 over the Giulia. Then again, maybe I wouldn't want to know. But looked at another way, if I'm looking to make long-distance drives, the G70 (Hyundai) support network is much more broad than the Alfa's. I'm conflicted, tbh. The Alfa's 4-cylinder is quite powerful compared to the G70's 4. But that's purely a matter of quickness, and I've yet to find a track/road test comparison between the two (Alex? are you reading this?). Quickness aside, which is the better car for those back roads? If it's close, I'll take the G70. Or would I risk taking the Alfa? I need therapy. I will add that I found the Alfa to be a comfortable ride(my wife was even comfortable in the back seat), if just a bit high on wind noise at expressway speeds. just a bit high, and not howling loud. So who'd notice on those back roads? :)

I am also a current owner of the 2019 Genny 2.0T manual stick after giving up my BMW M240i and the thrill is just as great, in my opinion. I am trying to get the word out to people here in the US NOT TO BE AFRAID of a clutch! Suddenly and shortly after you have some driving experience in this manual transmission will have you convinced that you do not need a 3.3T automatic! The performance can be extracted in ways you never thought once one develops the driving experience that equals the "bigger" engine. The Europeans cannot be wrong all these decades which is why the manual still rules. Americans are just plain lazy.

9:09 Invisible Touch by Genesis! I sat in one at the Nov 2018 San Francisco Auto Show and was quite pleased, but "sigh", not able to test drive...yet. A coupe version would be quite smashing indeed!

I am glad that Genesis is hiring good talent, and it is quite obvious when you look at the finished product. Genesis has come out of the gate strong and they are being very well received. Look for sales to take off as soon as the dealership mess is settled.

Really enjoyed the review of the G70 today, excellent details with market comparison's! Personally, like your comment at the end, I prefer sedan or sport sedan over crossover or SUV, so I was elated that Genesis designed and built this car! Living in Washington State we are awaiting for completion of contract Genesis Dealer Network to resolved, even now at January 7th of 2019. This last March 2018 my son and I went up to Vancouver BC International Car show to see this amazing car. Just the seating position and comfort of the drivers seat along with everything else pretty much sold me on the car. I am waiting till this December 2019 to purchase, hopefully I can accomplish the purchase here in Washington, however if need be I will go to Henderson, Nevada or Las Vegas to do so at that time. Our local Deal in Skagit Valley has promised me that this will happen …… I should be have been born in the "show me state" in stead of else where! Cheers, John

The G70 is Motor Trend's 2019 car of the year. The new bench mark in sport sedans has arrived and it ain't BMW anymore and hasn't been for a while now.

I get that it competes with the 3 series a lot, but IMO it's Infiniti that should be a little more nervous about this car. This is everything I loved about my old G sedan done so well and looking so good!

I picked up my 2020 Genesis G70 3.3T Sport AWD three days ago...all I can say that it’s an amazing fuckin vehicle...it’s gorgeous...it’s powerful...it’s classy. I have not been this excited to own a car since my 87 Mustang GT 305, w\5 speed stick! 😄😎😘

Dear Alex, Thank you for another great review. Your reviews are excellent. I also prefer sedans over cross-overs. It is refreshing to see manufacturers invest in sedans. Let's hope others do the same. I am especially eager to see what the CTS/ATS replacement is going to be like from Cadillac. Thank you again.

Reminds me of the time when Infiniti entered the game with its G35. Reminds me of Alfa Giulia... I like the short front overhang and the sporty/understated details throughout.

Hyundai really made a huge mistake launching this car before having the dealership network set in the US to capitalize on the great reviews Moto journalists have given this car. They better get it sorted before the new BMW 3 Series is released or they will never hit their sales targets.

Disagree. They can't stage out the dealerships sitting there doing nothing without first having product to sell.

The only reason for me not to buy this car is because of the dealer situation - I have to drive over 200 miles to the nearest one. Otherwise this is my next ride if I can find the budget! I currently drive an early 2009 Genesis with 265,000 miles and it's been almost perfect. Prior to that was a 2004 325i that I loved to drive, but hated to maintain. My only gripe with my 2009 Genesis was that it was too big - I preferred the smaller size and better handling of the 3, but love the Genesis interior, value equation and reliability, and this is the ticket. If I can't afford this I'll still get a Hyundai-Kia product, possibly one of the hybrids.

I’m thankful for Hyundai and Kia building cars like the G70 and Stinger. If I were in the market right now, I’d strongly consider any of the Genesis offerings.

Thanks for your great review. I am waiting for the G70 to be released in New Zealand and will be buying one. The separate "Genesis" branded dealer network has created delays I believe as those showrooms need to be built still.

I love the car. And I'd love a G70 based compact luxury crossover, high performance, low to the ground, that would handle like a dream (I need the cargo space for my woodworking projects but handling is super important to me).

Great review. I think a compact luxury sport sedan is a great choice. I don't want to have to buy a large car for luxury and I love the maneuverability of a car over even a compact SUV. The G70 will get serious consideration when I shop for my next vehicle.

How smooth and refined is the 3.3T vs the 3.5T in the G80? Power and torque is very similar.

Great review Alex. Thank you. After giving it a lot of thought, I got the 2.0T Prestige instead the 3.3T. I found it littler and nimbler, and the cash I saved in the engine, I putted on features that I really like, but I would like a performance review for the 2.0T from you. Have you done that, or planning to do it?

The Genesis dealership near me is loaded with 2019 & 2020 pre-owned G70's, most with about 20K on the odometer. Whoever owned them first didn't own them long.
