One thing I have to point about the auto transmission versus manual is this. I bought a manual GTI not for faster 0 to 60 times but for the joy of shifting a manual. That’s what I think most people buy a manual transmission for. It’s just more fun and I’m really enjoying my GTI manual. Great review.

@@Bobspineable Well let me explain, most of the sales of any brand will be depending on their more rational vehicles than category specific vehicles that are made for things like luxury or sport. The average common person has a family they need to carry them to their daily destinations, school, office, work places. They want to carry things like groceries items of daily use and stuff and once or twice a month some constructive related stuff to fix their houses. And they have limited money to spend in the end when they look at the utilitarian perspective of any vehicle a SUV lands on top of their list. Because it is more cuboidal which helps fit things inside the vehicle they get better view from seating position they get better headroom and leg room (generally speaking) They can carry comparatively bigger objects in their trunk. That is why in this busy day scenario of today they spend once and they want to spend more practical. SUVs will be their first choice for many years to come unless Sedans get more bigger :P

Great review. Have owned a 2020 for 6 months and is a blast, and the 2021 has very minimal changes mostly related to wireless android auto and adaptive cruise. The beats audio is atrocious, and there are some rattles already, otherwise all is great so far. Dont forget the armrest does have little risers to prop it higher for those of us who are taller, and there actually are air vents to the back but they are under the seat!

I really enjoy having reverse next to first gear. It makes going between those two gears fast and easy. Of course every time you leave reverse, you have go to first, so it makes sense that they should be next to each other. This is particularly useful when switching between forward and reverse frequently such as when doing a three point turn. The layout is also less common and I like it for that reason as well.

This is spot on. Our debut long term test car is a 2020 GLI Autobahn. Currently at 7000 miles and six months. Pretty solid but one hiccup with our rear brakes. No rattles and a hoot to drive. Keep in mind at this price or less you can look at some nice midsize options, if you want more comfort and features at the expense of performance. . Hint hint. K5 GT-line

I've had my 2020 GLI S with the DSG for about 5 months, and I must say, it's a killer daily. It's fun to just drive it like a goon from time to time, but it is very comfortable around town and gets great gas mileage (mid-30's, easily) on the highway. I have to say I don't know why one would get a fully-loaded Jetta when this exists for similar money.

Jetta always has a place in my heart and not what you think. My mother bought it used back in 2000 and after a while the engine would stop working back from idle like when the red light turns green and the car needs to start. One time she went into a ditch because of it. Not to mention the pressure and honking from all the cars behind her. My mom kept the car for 6 month but it spend more than three months at the shop. With the diesel scandal and historical unreliability I would never touch VW.

I had a 2016 GTI and I loved it. It had the R gear next to first and personally I prefer it the other way, at the bottom right. The reason: I assume for safety reasons, VW forced you to push the shifter "Into the console" to be able to move left into the reverse gate. This was not only annoying, but then on the way back from R to first, I would have to let the stick almost get back to center before it would leave that sunken, pushed in level. Other cars I've had, R "safety" would be to move the stick far to the right. But that's better because it doesn't require a push in.

Always have been curious about your reverse location preference on a manual. To me, right and down seems more scary in that if you somehow end up there instead of 6th, the car blows up? Left and up, you miss first, which may mean going forward instead of backward, but at least you’re starting from a stop.

I replaced my 2016 GTI with a 2020 GLI. My GTI had the LSD however. But, the good news is, I think the LSD works very well in this car as well. For me, I think the GTI was slightly more exciting to drive, but with the GLI, it is easier to enter/exit the car and generally more comfortable for daily driving. It's a better value overall, too, since it is cheaper and includes the old Performance Pack power increase and LSD standard. Best wishes on your car search.

@junliliu4997 3 жыл бұрын
Up+left is the way to go. In case you go into first from standing still by accident there is no harm, vs going into reverse by accident when you intend to shift into 6th on the highway. This the way Miata 6MT is set up, and I believe also how BMW does it.

@@junliliu4997 I've owned over 30 cars with manual transmissions. As long as I know where it is I've never cared or been bothered where it was. Remember, lots of the manuals are in right hand drive cars, so drivers are shifting with their left hand...quite a different experience, esp if you are right handed. Always best to know where reverse is, and in all modern manuals there is a definite lock-out, so you can't accidently go into reverse. 🙂

Not sure why automotive journalist these days have to sound apologetic when it comes to saying the automatics are faster than manuals in 0-60 tests. Manual drivers don't necessarily care about the 0.3 sec difference to 60, as 99% of the people buying these cars are not drag racing at the stoplight. Like Alex said later in the video, its about the feeling of driving the manual and engagement with the vehicle/clutch/shifter.

Great review for an overlooked compact sedan, Alex. I have to take issue with one statement, however. At around 12:00 you suggested that the GLI with its excellent DSG "unless you're trying really hard is likely to be "faster than a Golf R or Honda Civic Type R with an MT." As much as I love the DSG in my GTI I find it impossible to believe that the GLI/DSG combo is either quicker (e.g. 0-60 mph) or faster than a Golf R or Civic Type R with an MT for anyone with even the most limited experience with a manual transmission. Are you sure you didn't mean the GTI or the Civic SI? As far as the Jetta GLI sedan is concerned, as a GTI owner I have mixed feelings. On one hand I find it great to see the GTI in a 4dr sedan costume, especially at more affordable price. On the other hand, I'm suspicious that the lower priced, US built GLI may be a first step in VW's plans to drop the GTI from the US portfolio. The basic Golf is already gone and unlikely to return with the MK8 version. VW promises that the US will get the MK8 GTI and the Golf R but the latter is such a slow seller that VW repeatedly threatens to withdraw it from the US market. The Jetta (basic and GLI) already outsells the Golf (basic and GTI) by a margin of more than 3 to 1. I can imagine that VW's emphasis on SUVs would leave the iconic GTI and Golf R out in the cold. That would create the same tears from me that the demise of Saab produced. Though I think the GLI is a strong contender in the compact sedan segment, I'd still opt for the GTI for several reasons. First, I love the iconic shape and versatility of the Golf. Every week I have to transfer a large trash can from my down and back up a thousand foot very steep driveway. With the back seat folded my GTI swallows it with ease. Likewise, periodic trips to Costco to pick up a half dozen five gallon jars of mayonnaise and other staples or an occasional microwave or large screen TV is easily accomplished. The GLI has a generous trunk for the vehicle's size but it still doesn't compare to the GTI hatchback design even with the back seat folded. Second, the fact that the GLI lacks embedded navigation on any trim is a significant weakness for me. In the first place I hate deal with the tangle of cables every time I need a navigation system. If it ain't wireless I'd prefer my GTI's embedded nav system. Furthermore, while Apple CarPlay is a reasonable substitute for my GTI's native nav system in most cases the times I often need navigation assistance are often out in the wilderness where cellular coverage is spotty at best. The GTI's satellite based nav is more reliable in those cases. Finally, my big dog's second home is the back seat of my GTI. I have no problem denying a cooling breeze to my wife or daughter but my dog is another matter. The lack of rear seat AC would leave my dog miserable in summer heat especially on the way home from a romp in the dog park. He wouldn't complain like my daughter would but it would break my heart.

Alex, get real. Sure the version 8 Golf (2022 model for sale in the US) is going to be a hot-hot hatch, but the price is way-way beyond these sedans you are discussing. 320 hp, but over $41,000. PS: who cares where reverse is located........as long as you know where it is. Remember, there are right-hand drive versions of manual transmission cars, so those drivers are shifting with their left hand. 🙂

@@blueryxfalls7949 Carbon build-up is much less of an issue now compared to years past. My 2016 GTI with over 50k miles had minimal build-up per borescope inspection. I'm rocking a 2020 GLI now and will deal with that problem if the time comes, but experience suggests it'll be many years away.

I have a 2014 Jetta SE - serviced only at dealerships with synthetic oil changes - anything else would mean carbon build up. With an independent rear suspension which the model year had, and the leatherette interior, looks upscale and brand new even now. And then the 174 hp and 184 lb ft torque. Got it brand new for $18K.
