The 2023 Nissan Ariya Is Boxy And Practical... But It's Also Late To The Party

If you're looking for a roomy and practical EV, the Ariya should be on your list, especially if you plan on leasing because Nissan's aggressive lease rates largely compensate for the slower charge times vs some of the competition. It's more comfortable than a Mach E, roomier than an EV6, and less expensive than a Model Y. On the other hand, if you're interested in the EV tax credit, or you want a more reliable charging experience... Well, you know the answer there.

well, it just happened, 2024 Nissan Ariya starts at $39,590(not including destination charge) and goes up to $54,190(not including destination charge). base trim gets $3600 price reduction, with up to $6000 price reduction on other trim levels. and it will get NACS adaptor for Ariya later this year, it will get actual NACS plug staring next year.

The only problem is those are lower production. I think they are going for the Rouge market with this. Though having a new EV Quest, and low riding like those awesome Asian market minivans would be pretty cool though. I would get one in half a heartbeat for the Arya's asking price.

I wanted an Ariya SO BAD. I had driven a Leaf for years and loved it, but needed more range. The Ariya had that, and I loved the styling. Then it got delayed a year, then another, then another... Before it could come out, the Mach-E beat it to market, and had better almost everything. I wound up with that, instead. The Ariya looks great for a vehicle that should have released almost 4 years ago.

We actually just bought an Ariya and I personally love it! Honestly I was sucked in by how aesthetically pleasing it is, inside and out. Also it is SO quiet and comfortable to drive. This is a commuting/shopping/short day trip car for us, so the range (300+ on the Venture+) is perfect and an upgrade from our Leaf. Mostly charge at home. We wouldn't have qualified for the full tax credit anyway, and we got a sizable rebate, so price-wise there was not much difference between this and other similar options for us. (If you can take the full credit that would be a different story.) I liked the dash/controls way better than the ID (which were weird and confusing), also the ride is much more pleasant. The only con so far is I wish it had full-on one-pedal driving like the Leaf - the e-pedal mode on the Ariya doesn't stop the car fully.

We just got the Platinum + and love it. Just like you, I sorely miss the one-pedal drive like in our other car, a Tesla Model 3. BTW-We leased the Ariya so we got the $7,500 Federal tax credit discounted from the full price.

I looked at both the Ionic 5 Limited and Ariya Platinum+ e-4orce and ended up buying the Ariya because I liked the styling inside and out best. While I understand the reservations identified in this review, none of them really made a difference for me. It is perfectly suited to my commute and is super quiet and rides much better than my previous Tesla Model 3. Since I charge at home overnight, charge speed isn't an issue. When we travel we take my wife's XC90 which is much more spacious than any EV (short of the new EV9 perhaps). So I'm very happy with my choice. I especially love having the cooled seats (its over 100 degrees this week here), Apple CarPlay and actually having stalks to control my wipers and headlights. What a concept...lol.

Yea, charging speed is a interesting one. Even fast charging EVs are rarely fast charged, so it seems to be more of a mental barrier than anything. We never DC charge our EVs outside of testing for videos and usually charge at just 3 kW LOL

Good choice. I have a 24 Engage AWD 205 miles range, and I have no regrets about my choice. It's perfect for my needs, as I only use it for commuting to work and taking my kids to and from school, totaling 12 miles a day. I charge the car once a week at home using my Chargepoint Home Flex. For long road trips, we use our gas guzzler Acura MDX. I leased it for $275 month with tax zero drive off. You cant beat that deal.

I own the Platinum AWD trim (e-4orce) & it's brilliant! The only reason I can't recommend it is that it's probably $8K too expensive. If they lower the price it beats all of its competitors all-around. It won't charge as fast as the Koreans or have the storage of the Tesla but it has the best interior BY FAR & has hands free highway driving, HUD, rearview camera, & great driving dynamics. The charging is not great but this is something that can be improved.

I love your unbiased review of Ariya. I have been driving a platinum version of Ariya for three months now. I must say I love the vehicle. My wife too. Driving with proper e-step usage and at less than or equal to 65mph, I am used to getting about 3.5kwh/miles. Well-crafted vehicle. I am fine with its slower charging rate. I charge only at home 99% of time. Whenever I charge at DC stations, I prefer multiple stops to charge from 40/50% to 80% with a charging time of less than 15 mins and I believe that will help with longevity of the battery.

@sajiantony7473
@sajiantony7473 10 ай бұрын
@@SueC56 Ariya's suspension is somewhere at an equilibrium of stiffness and softness. I also have an old 2013 Pathfinder and it has better ride comfort. Adaptive suspensions are expensive. So Nissan avoided it to keep prices as low as possible for an already expensive EV. Ariya's battery weight and 42 psi air pressure are not helping here. I wish it has a softer suspension than it has now. From what I understand from the KZbin reviews about Model Y and from a friend who owns a Mach-E, Ariya has a better ride comfort. And the faster you ride, the lesser you feel roughness of the road. Seats are comfortable, even for the rear passengers. I just came back from a long ride today and my average energy usage is same as before 3.5kwh/miles @ 85F - which equates to 305miles on full battery for an AWD vehicle.

The only thing holding it back is the nameplate. If the only thing that changed was to swap out the Nissan badge for an Infiniti badge folks wouldn't have a problem with the price. Hopefully this is just a step in the right direction for Nissan as they try to shake off the bad image they got for the CVT mess and for selling so many cheap cars to rental fleets. Mazda is doing something similar with their restyle and transitioning from the economy + to cheap luxury segment they tried to do in the '90s and only didn't work because of domestic economic factors outside their control.

You're spot on with the e-GMP DCFC. Once you've experienced typically sub 20 minute top off's to 80% from anywhere around 20-40% it's really really hard to go with something else. Charging on the Aria isn't as good as the ID.4 which is unfortunate, but looking at the reviews and curves posted for the BZ4X, in the real world it looks like a much quicker charging car, especially against the BZ4X AWD which is abysmal. At the end of the day it's clean sheet ev money (e-GMP, ID.4) for something that's a best effort cobbling together of significant amounts of Rouge bits (hence the FWD bias) and just... a generation behind (like the BZ4X) for the same money as a great, future focused EV. Swing and a miss from Nissan, especially with the EV5 about to launch.
@Wasssup3232

In the real world the Ariya averages 10-80 in around 32 minutes in a perfect world. The channel Nissan electrified has a bunch of charging tests and even pulled up to a charger during freezing conditions in Europe and he beat the hell out of the Ioniq 5 that was there. If it keeps the battery lasting a longer time sure 12 minutes can sometimes feel like a lot of time but it isn’t horrible by any means like the 50 minutes the bz4x has been doing. (Around 43 minutes with the new software)

This car is a perfect lease candidate. I'm in NJ, which is a state that's very generous with rebates. No sales tax, a 4K state incentive that applies to the base trim. Along with a generous money factor(APR) from Nissan and this car can be had in the sub $450 monthly range with no money down. This is before any dealer discount. I don't see Nissan is passing on the $7,500 rebate, I think Alex is meaning to say they pass it along in the sense of a very low money factor(APR) for leasing.

Today we tested the top version of Ariya with my family. I loved this car. But my wife told me that all these hi-tech interior materials are ugly and look very boring. And all my claims about speeding, driving range, acceleration, adaptive cruise, styling, etc were ignored. Looks like we still keep our two Muranos for ages :((((
@jasonburns8126

The comparison chart is misleading. I value Alex's analysis and I have been following him for years, but he significantly undervalued the Model Y. Unlike the other cars, it is a dual motor, longer range, faster excelleratuon and is more efficient. If you compare all of the other cars with their optional dual motors, you will see that the Model Y is the best deal because it qualifies for the full $7500 tax credit, unlike the Mache.
@dansanger5340
@dansanger5340 11 ай бұрын
The dual motor and faster acceleration are a better deal only if you need and want them. Otherwise, you are paying extra for features you don't need or want. Some people are on a budget. Also, he mentioned but didn't factor in that you can get cash on the hood for some of these cars, that will bring their price well below MSRP.
@jasonburns8126
@jasonburns8126 11 ай бұрын
If you're on a budget then a model 3 would still give you more range, faster 0-60 and faster charging speeds. Cash on the hood at a dealership is a possibility, but Tesla also places significant discounts on their inventory. Making cars like the Mach e 6k more than a model 3, and the model y, that has a discount, would be about equal to price of a mach e after the federal tax credit.

In my EV6 I easily get 3.4-3.6 mi/kWh at 72-75mph on my 170mi round trip commute. So this efficiency in the Ariya is pretty disappointing to be honest. Hoping Nissan makes some improvements to make it more competitive in the future.

Good review, as usual. Seems that Nissan is behind competition where it really counts, price, range and speed of charging. Overall, the design is acceptable for someone who wants that size of car. I really don’t think any manufacturer should be getting a tax credit, but I’m helping them buy a car with the taxes I pay and it will increase tax rates (the gov’t is going to spend less money). I don’t plan to buy an EV because they are overpriced and I don’t like buying EV battery materials from China. I think their needs to be better battery solutions for range and charging times before I will consider EV’s a viable product that I would want to purchase.

I’m feeling self-satisfied that Alex’s findings are in line with my impressions of my test drive in the Ariya. The one thing that I’m surprised nobody mentions is that the interior and exterior plastic looks far cheaper and less impressive in person. All of the Kumiko accents really look bad in waxy plastic and even worse with the backlighting. I get what they were trying to do, but it didn’t work due to cost-savings. It does have a flat charging curve but it is inefficient and fat. Although quiet, the one I drove had a constant oscillation on all surfaces. Our heads were constantly bouncing off of the headrest. Nice HUD Not great on storage space.

Manufacturers only listen to current customers which is apart of the problem and quite the catch-22. I completely agree; the negatives and design/engineering choices are quite bizarre. It's not quite as bad as the BZ4X but that's a pretty low standard to begin with anyway given the Nissan Leaf has been around for a long time. I expected better from Nissan. The Ariya is quite a disappointment but then again maybe I'm not who Nissan was thinking of when they designed the Ariya. A Rogue EV that is a bit more boxier and roomier inside would have been better. Either way, with the Kia EV9 and hopefully Hyundai Ioniq 7 on the way, Nissan should be really worried as far as the American market is concerned. Yes, the Ariya isn't a three row but it's pretty obvious most Americans love the Telluride/Pallisade/Highlander more than they do the Murano. That in itself and the price of the Ariya given what you get is basically putting a few nails in the coffin already when the Ariya hasn't even been on sale for very long to boot. Let's see if Nissan learns their lesson once the EV9 and Ioniq 7 come ashore.

It is highly variable. Generally speaking this should be a little lower than the Model Y but real world differences are likely around 10% or less. If you're averaging nearly 4mi/kwh in a Model Y then you would be getting solid numbers in this as well.

Yes, I’m a fan of the styling, but not the specs or of what those who have driven and reviewed have to say. Re: late in the game. . . Considering it’s to early in the game for me to consider an EV purchase, this reference has no meaning to me. There is just more and more EVs coming into the market, and it seems ‘the game‘ is mostly struggling to get on a course of leveling out with ICE vehicles, (Tesla excepted) so it’s still in the early adapter, ramping up, getting to profitability phase. By the time my MY2022 ICE purchase is long in the tooth, ‘the EV game’ may be somewhere in the realm of my entry.

I don't think it's late. Electric cars still aren't ready for prime time, range, charge time, battery degradation, cold weather performance, puncture performance, etc are improving but aren't there yet in my opinion. However, Toyota's new solid state battery breakthrough might be the ticket to the issue, solving pretty much everything above. It won't probably reach consumers until the close of this decade, by the 2030's, I'll have my eyes peeled to get a BEV, but until then hybrids or PHEV's are as far as I'll go. That is also a fact for the majority of consumers.

If you qualify for the federal tax credit, some of these are well under $40k. Even less if there are state incentives. Look at the ID4 and Mustang Mach-E. Plus, I've seen the ID4s offered online for $1600 off MSRP, and Mach-Es for $3500 off MSRP. If you want compact/subcompact then look at the Chevy Bolt and Chevy Bolt EUV. Starting price around $27k to $30k, and subtract $7500 if you qualify for the federal tax credit.
