Alex, Great review, spot on! Your review really confirms what I thought was the case. And now I know why I'm having so much fun with this transmission, thanks for the insight. I hate buyers remorse, and after 1,500 miles on our new 2017 Durango R/T, I am pleased to say there is none here. This vehicle is a riot. The acceleration, handling and exhaust sound continuously put a smile on my face. We recently had to consolidate 3 vehicles to 2. We have always had a Tahoe, Suburban or GMC equivalent in our driveway for getting the whole family around during the week and trips up north skiing and towing the snowmobiles on the weekends. Because I'm a bit of a performance enthusiast our other two cars were an Audi S4 and a BMW 335CIC. Due to budget constraints and the need to Tow and shuttle the whole family around with both family vehicles the Audi sedan and BMW convertible had to go. I really wanted the new Audi Q7 or the GMC Denali as the back up to the suburban but they just weren't in the budget this year. I really did not think I would find a vehicle that could provide as much driving enjoyment as my S4 or my wife's 335CIC until we drove the Durango R/T. For me it satisfies the fun factor big time! It has the Tow capacity I need, can fit the whole family, and meets the budget requirement. As much as I thought I needed a Q7 or Denali or X5 to be happy, I was wrong. If you want performance, Towing, 3 rows, under $50,000 you owe it to yourself to take one for a ride. Alex didn't go into much detail about the transmission modes, there are three, transmission sport mode or steering sport mode but are worth playing with as you drive the Durango. There is a huge difference in fun factor between the V6 and the R/T. I think I could have lived with the V6 except I wanted the extra tow capacity of the R/T with the V8. No it's not going to hang with an S4, but I am finding it's just as fun to drive. REALLY! Also, you get to know your car when you detail it and I can say after several cleanings I am very happy with the interior quality. I really thought I was going to have to settle after the Audi and the BMW but I don't find that the case, yet. Vice White, Red interior. Loving it.

I've watched many car reviews. I think yours are the best. You don't skip any of the small details and for someone who is very detail oriented, that's a big deal. Also the section at the end where you compare to similar cars in the class is very informative. Any car buyer is going to find this video very helpful when making a decision. One thing that I would add to your evaluation is the reliability factor and maybe maintenance costs. These will be big factors down the line.

Alex thanks for confirming my choice in the best overall SUV\Crossover! I have had my 2014 R\T AWD for 2 years now and it still makes me smile when I fire up the hemi and hear that badass exhaust note. It is the perfect sized vehicle and it checks all the right boxes. V8, AWD with rear wheel bias, 8 speed trans, killer looks, 8.4 Uconnect etc. Dodge really does give you alot for your money. Your 5.7second 0-60 time is the best Ive seen anyone report! And I believe it. 15:00 Great review as always.

I love the SUV comparisons although the Chevrolet Tahoe's top trim level is now the Premier (formerly the LTZ), not the Denali which is the Yukon's top trim level. Nonetheless it's good to see Alex is such a big fan of the Durango. Dodge was on the brink of discontinuing it after 2015, so I'm looking forward to its redesign hopefully in 2018 or 2019. It's still a great bargain for all the features and performance available for under $50 grand.

Very, Very, Very good review! Packed with good info and well prepared! I just bought the 2017 Dodge Durango R/T 2WD a few days ago and now found this. I did take almost a year to finally pull the trigger doing my own research of which you confirmed for me. One thing you didn't (I think you didn't) touch on was the "Wheel Base". The Durango is 119.8" which is easily 5" or more than all but the Suburban. This (to me) translates directly into ride quality. Limousines have long wheelbases for a reason. Also, the 8.4Uconnect NAV system blows away the Ford and GM. When it comes to being intuitive to use as well as the features offered. Consumer Reports also touts the Dodge 8.4 system as tops. As well as towing......you might mention the large Brembo brakes on the R/T model to help greatly in stopping the heavier tow load without having to rely on assisted braking by the trailer itself. Again, well done!

I also added a few more toys to get it as high as approx 450 whp / almost 500 ft/lb torque as I could without breaking it. But u wouldn't believe the power. You'll see it in the vid. When the supercharger is at full power you feel like you're going to take off. Thank God it weighs 5k pounds lol. Great review. Good question about the turbos. I also tend to get better fuel economy if I paddle shift instead of letting the trans pick it for me. It gets average 10 mpg in Brooklyn. Not in traffic. If I paddle shift and pick a good gear to keep it rolling off of a good tap on the gas , it can't downshift on its own and bring the revs up. So u can get up to speed in 3rd and then double tap to fifth to maintain with occasional throttle and I have gotten 26.3 out of it. On the highway. Medium trafiiic. And 17.9 on the street. Vs it shifting itself and getting 10 city /16 hway. They lie on that sticker too. They tell you" it runs on reg unleaded at an annual fuel cost of 5,280$ :)". They don't tell u that it will run like crap firstly , and it will smoke in the summer from the exhaust and it will smell like an 80's trans am. I put premium in this badboy and I get almost 80 miles more per tank. If I use octane booster. Closer to 100 more. Don't trust that sticker. Test drive. 100%. Supercharger done by rippmods in NYC. The vid of the truck is on his channel 2014 Dodge Durango rt. Supercharged!! Listen to that monster!!

As much as the Grand Cherokee & Durango are good 3 row SUVs, I can't recommend or ever think about an FCA made vehicle without the fear of something breaking or malfunctioning within a span of a year. There is a reason why FCA brand continuously populate the lowest customer satisfaction in CR ratings & Edmunds consumer reviews section. Of all 3 American brands, Chrysler has by far the worse track record in reliability. Fiat in Europe has always been jokingly referred to as "Fix It Again Tony". Merging these two brand which neither knows what the definition of reliability...you already can see the results.

@AlexOnAutos Excellent review, per usual. But I'd be remiss if I didn't call your attention to a slight mishap. The current Durango and JGC are related to the current MBZ GLS and GLE. The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and shortly thereafter, the 2011 Dodge Durango, were the first to use the new WK-2 chassis in what would be the last of the DaimlerChrysler project. The 2012 MB ML-Class(now GLE) and 2013 GL-Class(now GLS) are based on that circa-2011 chassis. So no LX/E-Class bones in the Durango. Also, it is always stated that MB handed this chassis down. That is quite to the contrary of what actually occurred. Chrysler had heavy engineering input for the chassis, as did MB. Jeep had to ensure the off-road ability, while MB demanded comfort and lux. That is all present, at the expense of weight, with most trims being over 5000 pounds at Jeep, Dodge, or MB.

FYI, Ford's been having reliability issues with the ecoboost engines (shuddering, tuning issues, timing chain failure in 3.5 ecoboost, etc). Also, 2.7 Ecoboost isn't available in the Explorer. 3.5 non-Ecoboost base V-6 in Explorer is likely to be the most reliable.
